0.17.1 Progress Update #1

Rate this Entry
Hi again,

Time for a quick update on the status of the 17.1 patch:

We've been working hard at fixing the crash issues reported by some, and we've made some progress. It's hard to say with any degree of certainty that the fixes we implemented will solve the issue for everyone, but the new graphics settings we exposed, combined with the removal of some buggy assets, plus a drastic optimization on the PQS system, should hopefully improve the experience for the vast majority, especially if you're on a low-end machine.

We've also been adding a couple more things here... well, here's the changelog as it stands now:

Code:

==================================== v0.17.1 x3

New:
* New option on the settings file to enable verbose debug logging, to include a call stack trace (when available)

Bug Fixes and Tweaks:
* Fixed an issue where the menu ambience music would sometimes start playing on other scenes after some time had elapsed.
* Overhauled the Debug Console. Entries are now labeled and colored according to type and the text is selectable.

==================================== v0.17.1 x2

New:
* Added a slider in Game Settings to allow adjusting the UI size.
* Added Main Menu and Credits music.
* The Q and E keys can now be used to control yaw with the EVA Jetpack

Bug Fixes and Tweaks:
* Fixed the crewmember name textfields on the flight UI not scaling font size properly.
* Fixed the terrain collision detection issues for Gilly and Bop.
* Tweaked the terrain preset settings and PQS subvision methods for a significant reduction in object count.
* PQS terrain quads are now positioned as closely as possible to their vertices, for maximum mesh stability.
* Added a game setting to disable the automatic orientation when pressing any of the WSAD keys while jetpacking on EVA.

==================================== v0.17.1 x1

New:
* The flight UI now scales dynamically depending on screen resolution, to always have the same pixel size.

Bug Fixes and Tweaks:
* Fixed an issue with the terrain engine that resulted in invisible oceans.
* Fixed a small bug on the patched conics maths that could have caused some trouble.
* Fixed the misaligned Music and Voice Volume sliders on the Audio Settings Screen.
* Added a Render Quality slider to the video settings screen.
* Fixed an issue where ships could break apart when changing warp rates too quickly (the "Space Cthulhu" bug)
* Fixed an issue with the VAB/SPH UI, that made it possible to launch without a ship, causing a total game crash.
* Removed an unused asset from the tracking station scene, which was taking up memory without adding anything.
* Fixed a problem that could cause parachutes to despawn when travelling at high speeds.

That's the status as of right now. I'll post new updates as we go.

Cheers

    I was going to post a bug report about Bop -- after *finally* landing successfully, Jeb didn't seem to want to get off his face, and he blew up while cresting a mountain with his jetpack quite far from the surface -- but I'm glad I checked here first; I'm optimistic that the 0.17.1x2 terrain collision will take care of it.

    As always, I'm impressed by the effort and capability of the Squad team. Thanks for all your hard work!

    Thank you for the progress update! It's difficult to express how much I/we appreciate knowing what's going on behind the scenes.

    Sounds like a good little update, especially with the hopefully improved performance. Sure, I can run the game pretty well, but that's on low graphic settings and it's still a bit frame-laggy at times, even with an Alienware! The EVA yaw controls sound good too, as does music on the menu, but don't the credits already have music...? Oh well, doesn't really matter.

    Keep up the good work guys!

    Looking good! I thought that this would be only bugfixes!

    Harv, have you considered adding a button that instantly puts throttle to 100%, like the button that shoots it to 0%? It would be really useful when doing those last minute burns on landings, etc.

    Harv will this break Persistance saves for 0.17?

    Judging by the changes reported, it's probably safe to say they'll be working. Those who managed to land on Gilly/Bop may see their ships explode, since the collision meshes will have changed a bit...

    Suggestion: A button that automatically resets the yaw back to the original , like with last exit from an airlock overridden by the last step on a planetary body/other on-rails object.

    will this break my ships?

    Looking forward to this update! I can't wait to test out my InterPlanetary Ion Tug but right now it just keeps crashing from lack of memory.

    Wow. I'm really impressed how much work is done to improve a game that's still so early in its development. I'm really looking forward to this update! Many kudos to the dev team.

    It MIGHT affect stuff that's landed on Bop or Gilly, but considering how difficult that already is, it shouldn't be an issue.

    Ah-ha! I knew it

    In .17, are the places where you explode on bop/Gilly all over their surfaces? So far I have landed 3 times on them and haven't encountered this problem, so I am confused lol.
