  1. Thanks for the replies. Like I said, I was pretty uneducated with google drive. But after poking around, I discovered that when I download the file off of google drive, It opened in excel for me. So, that is good enough. For those that have excel, they can use excel, and those that don't can use google sheets or whatever. Thanks Cunjo Carl for your help once again. You helped answer a math question I had while making the spreadsheet I am posting the link to the spreadsheet below as a test. It is, for the most part, a delta V trip calculator. I started making it for myself for fun, and then decided half way through that it was turning out to be cool enough to share. If you look at it tell me what you think. I will also be posting this on a separate thread and on Reddit under the name Niknack. Delta V Calculator
  2. Thanks for the help, but like I stated earlier, I am looking for a way to post an excel file, not something similar, but an excel file. I saw on a forum somewhere where someone posted a link and it opened directly into excel. I was hoping to do that. Then they have there own copy of the file to do with what they will. I don't like the idea of having a file open for everyone to edit. With google drive couldn't someone just make a change and delete a referenced cell and break the whole spreadsheet. Or am i mistaken and that is not how google drive works? Also, it may seem weird, but the reason why I even made this spreadsheet (which took me weeks) is because I love Excel and the whole feel of the program. I don't like the imitation programs that try to be like excel, even if they function the same. So, I would like to avoid using them if I have a choice. And I saw some mention of a way of uploading an excel file without having to format it to a google drive document. An Excel file. One more time for good measure I will take what I can get though, so if there is no solution here, I will either keep looking or submit to an inferior product.
  3. I am looking to post/share an excel spreadsheet I made for KSP on this forum and also on Reddit. And to be clear, I don't want it to be converted to something like google docs or google drive. I want it to remain an excel file. I've looked around on how to go about doing that, but the only thing I found was some vague direction about importing to google docs and to not copy/paste. I have no idea what that means. When I go on google docs there is no import option. plus the thread was 4 years old, so maybe/probably google docs has changed. Couple that with the total lack of experience I have with google docs or drive or any other online spreadsheet source. If anyone can walk me through the process or direct me to some instructions I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance and again if you help
  4. Gaarst, thank you for the help. That was well answered. I think I can manage an equation out of all that info. (I am making my own dV map in excel.) I knew it was cheaper and I also knew it was not practical to hope that the moon would be in the right place at the right time to make the transfer at an optimal time. But I prefer to spend more dV to make an imperfect transfer than to try and time when the high eliptical orbit around kerbin (from the muner escape) is aligned with Kerbins orbital path so that burning at PE results in a clean Hohmann transfer (if that made sense). Also, Mun to Duna was just an example. If you are returning from one of the moons of Jool to kerbin, then it takes even less dV to fudge your transfer burn to meet up with Kerbin since Jools orbital speed Is so much slower than Kerbin. ***Typed from my tiny phone. Sorry for spelling or any other errors.
  5. Like the title says. Is there a way to calculate the delta V required for a transfer from a moon to a distant planet? For example, Mun to Duna, Without first stopping at the moons planet (Kerbin in this instance). It seems to save considerable delta V in most cases and for the life of me I can't find any examples of the math that would be used.
  6. Definitely cheating in this one instance of rules I have made for myself. Any other time, I would dive right in and grab any info I could.
  7. Holy cow! Thank you everyone for helping me. To be honest I am not surprised. The math and science community is awesome.
  8. That looks like it might be the answer! I've seen the vis-viva equation mentioned in a ton of websites, but somehow I missed it. Now I just need to get that "a" to the other side of the equation and all alone...I don't know how easy that will be, but I can certainly try. It's been about 10 years since I've done anything like that. Thank you for your help.
  9. I'm working on an excel spreadsheet that will calculate dV requirements for traveling to and from different planets and am sort of stuck on determining the Semi major axis of a planet or moons orbit. I want to be able to calculate it based on the information giving in the game and no more. That includes not using time warp to find the AP and PE. That little info box on the map screen that shows the EQ radius, Area, Mass, GM, etc., and the planet/moon's current velocity and current distance about it's orbiting body is all I get. I would also allow a re-measure of the velocity and distance at a relatively short time later (like an hour or a day later) if there is a way to use triangulation or something to help figure out the ellipse SMA or orbital period. Every source I've found to calculate SMA uses the orbital period to help determine it, but I don't know how to calculate the orbital period of an ellipse based on the limited information available to me (listed above). Correction, I may have found the answer, but calculus language can easily get lost on me. Like derivatives. I don't understand them at all. So, when I read a description of an equation that contains a derivative, I have no idea if the equation will help me or not. but if i need to use a derative to solve, I will learn, but I need to know if it will in fact help. To help clarify why I am doing this. I would like to play KSP with one of the different planets mods (don't know which yet) and also the research body mod and be able to calculate the size of the rocket that I need to travel there with out any external help. I hope that made sense to someone who can help. Thank you.
  10. This is sage advice. Thank you for that explanation. Although, I do have backups of every single version of the game since I started playing Sept of 2013, and also several for different play styles that I am currently playing.
  11. @StarwasterLOL. Why is direct editing a no-no? That's how I did it. I just changed the "atmocurve" in the parts file for each engine. At first, I was very precise rounding to 3 decimal places. note: I also changed the name of the "squad" folder. maybe that caused an issue too? When all the parts didn't show up in-game, I deleted the "squadRSS" folder (which was the name I gave it), and restored it from my backup to try again but this time ignoring the jet engines all together, rounding the atmocurve values to whole numbers only, and keeping the folder name unchanged. That did the trick. All the parts are there and the game seems stable. @Bornholio Thank you for your awesome suggestions. The ISPx2 mod by miki-g was exactly what I was looking for, only I changed the x2 values to x2.764706. Woot, THANKS!!!
  12. I have a question, please. I want to play with RSS, but not RO and also, I want a rocket that can get to orbit in stock KSP, to also get to orbit in RSS. Make sense? So, I went into the parts folder and increased all the engine ISP amounts by a factor of 2.76 (which is RSS DV to LEO divided by KSP DV to LKO; 9400/3400=2.764706) Using this, I was able complete a landed moon mission and return using the same stock parts (only tweaked) as I would if i were doing a Mun mission and return. The amount of fuel remaining after both missions was very comparable. My problem is, When I change all the engines ISP's it removes a bunch of parts from the game, like: All the payload parts, all the jet engines, and a few other parts as well. Why would this be? Also, is there already a mod that does this? or is there an easier and more reliable way of doing this than what I have done? Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you. Side note: is this in the right thread?
  13. Project: Rhea, Mission Eight Duna Train Delivery Mission Objectives: Primary Mission: Deliver Chiron to Duna for use in transporting Kerbals from landing zone to appropriate base Secondary Mission: Don't get frustrated and quit KSP for 4 months. In anticipation of a large number of kerbals arriving from Kerbin, the KSC decided that.a transportation system that would transport the arriving kerbals to their designated base was needed. The brilliant engineers decided that a large reliable rover simply wouldn't do the job. Miraculously, all of the engineers came up with the same idea at the same time: Lets send a train!!! Oh how joyed the kerbals were with their amazing idea. But, that wasn't enough for them. They felt it was time to do something truly amazing. To really stand out above the rest. Let's send the train to Duna, but we can have a larger train, a rocket train, be the deliver vehicle. Oh, and lets make it a VTOL train, because why not. Those Fools. (by "those" i mean myself. I'm a fool. I hate myself for this idea.) Enjoy! Primary Mission Status: Technically...Complete Secondary Mission Status: Failure No link to Craft. I will not be sharing this craft unless it is requested.
  14. Project: Rhea, Mission Seven Duna Station: Pegasus Mission Objectives: Primary Mission(s): Safely Deliver the Pegasus Station to Low Duna Orbit Secondary Mission: None The KSC Astronaut Complex is starting to smell, due to the over population of kerbals living in that single building. Hundreds of kerbals have to sleep in the hallways because there inst enough beds or rooms to accommodate everyone. Everyone is eager to start sending more kerbals to Duna. But, before the mass migration can begin, there has to be a station in LDO, where crew can transfer to descent vehicles and the transport ship can refuel and return to Kerbin.
