  1. As these folks have agreed, my main point is for Squad to nip this thing in the bud. NOW. They can't fix the problem... so reduce the chances of your customers (alpha testers who pay to play?) complaining by giving them a warning when they first start the game or via a ship-building tutorial. If I saw such a warning, it would have prevented me (and many others here who have complained), from investing 20-30 200 hours of gameplay going down a path that is completely unsatisfying. If I had known this, I would have used more efficient designs... OR would have simply opted to explore other places. Instead, I jumped from orbiting Kerbin to docking and refueling, to landing on Mun, to LET'S BUILD A MUN BASE!! While I can (barely) tolerate this "you-live-and-you-learn" situation, casual gamers are less likely. And I bring up "casual gamers" because of the game's intro to Steam: If it were FREE alpha, that's one thing. I've never paid a company to help them move out of alpha. Never beta, either. BUT, I'm perfectly OK with paying $23 for something that is as enjoyable as was my first 20 hours of playing it. That was money well spent. I've paid three times as much for a much worse experience from games that were actually released as "production" (I'm sure we all have). This being said, I discovered KSP via Steam and something I saw on YouTube the same day. For those of you who continue to harp on the idea that "this is alpha... it's going to be buggy..." We get it. But we must also assume that once this hit Steam, the user base has expanded significantly. SOME people simply won't get the alpha idea... but, as I said above, I've never paid to help test a company's software. Since this game went to Steam, there are likely hundreds, if not thousands, of just casual gamers who dropped $23 just to putter around in a space sim. Those people will not know about this inherent problem of the game until they've discovered it themselves. Many will just put the game down there (and then spread their disdain via word of mouth).... most will attempt to check a FAQ, a wiki, a tutorial, or this forum. The people who were drawn to this game prior to Steam will continue to tolerate the idea of alpha/beta play. Many casual gamers will not. I hope with these many threads, people are now past the idea that it's out of Squad's control to fix it. It is not beyond their control to address it through better customer education. When I got my blueprints to build my home, it was clear how many 2x4s, shingles, and bricks would be necessary. I also had a presumption that if I could afford it and it would pass code, I could add anything I wanted to the house, because that's how building works. I don't want to add a third story to the house and then be told AFTER, that "oh... you won't like the third floor. It'll be too hot all the time." I expect my architect to tell me that before I build. Squad (and this forum, FAQs, wikis, tutorials, etc.) is that architect capable of warning us before we've invested in that unlivable third floor addition.
  2. Wow.. are there more and more posts about lag, or is it just a coincidence given there are simply more players? Like OP and countless others, I've pulled my hair out over the last 10 days or so due to this limitation of Unity. I spent hours trying to get a few more frames (4FPS up to 8FPS). Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and decided to just rebuild the base completely. I realized I was spending wayyy too much time trying to tweak my settings and playing with a deplorable framerate; starting from scratch would be better. Only THIS time redesigning everything with fewer parts and connections... and of course going through all the pain of redelivering the pieces to the Mun. (It would be oooooohhh so helpful if there were a cheat that allowed you to switch one VESSEL for another in the persistent file. There isn't one is there?) All this being said, it seems there are a BUNCH of Getting Started guides, FAQs, videos, etc. When I first started playing, I used some of those resources, but I never saw anyone mention this SUBSTANTIAL limiting factor for the game. I guess I just missed it. SEEMS like a STICKY would be VERY useful for this issue. The "Performance" section of the "Known Issues" sticky does not mention this issue. In retrospect, I sure wish there were a POP-UP warning in a building tutorial or when you first enter the VAB that said something like this: "Once you figure out the basics, you're likely going to want to build a huge space station or a Mun base. DON'T DO IT until you understand the limitations of the software: you will likely only be able to have maybe 300 to 400 parts rendered in the same scene until you have a substantial loss of game performance. PLAN ACCORDINGLY: use parts wisely; don't just attach things because they look cool.... you'll regret it later." (this is tongue-in-cheek, but you get the idea) This simple caveat, plus maybe the list of helpful tips for maximizing performance (while sacrificing quality) would help reduce the chances of paying customers simply walking away from this game. This issue will be a substantial problem for user experience, if the game is to ever mature out of alpha. I suspect many have already put down the game and moved on to others. My 2 cents.
  3. Thanks for the info. I was scratching my head about the new file that is the same as the old one. lpam-- I don't think you can change thread subjects, but if you can, it would be mighty helpful if you referred to "KW Rocketry" (with a space).... will help with people trying to search the forum for support info using the author's name for it. I posted a link to this thread over on Spaceport to help others out.
  4. On behalf of my people, please accept my sincerest apologies. The traditional Kerbollockstinian head bump is a mostly ceremonial gesture conveyed as a sign of mutual respect and enduring admiration. I will immediately contact our Chancellor of Diplomatic Affairs and request his office send your ambassador a gift basket, along with several copies of our pamphlet entitled "Customary Kerbollockstinian Greetings and Gesticulations."
  5. Also, on behalf of all Kerbals of the Democratic Republic of Kerbollockstan and Its Outlying Territories, I hereby present the Kerbollock Bronze Star to KospY for significant contributions and meritorious service to the Kerbollockstan Space Agency. [salute/handshake/traditional Kerbollockstinian head bump]
  6. I saw someone else report exploding parts... and a response that indicated it could be the Switching View bug. I'll check that out. I had two instances where I dropped an unplugged magnet on the ground and then at some point afterwards, it blew up while not in view (so I didn't exactly see what happened... only the remnants of what was left... and the noticeably missing magnet in both instances). I'll see if it continues and see if it's actually the switching views bug (suspect that's it... thanks Mihara).
  7. Wow... came earlier today to thank KospY in anticipation of the release... and checked back a couple hrs later, and it's posted. THANK YOU! I've loaded, and so far it's working fine with the winches I already had in prior save. Can't wait to start building my Mun base again!! My favorite mod!!
  8. I also want to thank KospY for this mod and the hard work on the impending update. I, like others here have also stated, started to build my bases around KAS. After landing some H.O.M.E. modules on Mun, I wanted to move the modules around a bit. I landed a KAS-fitted module mover, which worked perfectly. I was in the process of building a larger mover when 0.20 dropped. I put my whole program on hold until KospY gets a chance to update.
  9. Thanks. (this extra stuff here added because "Thanks." was <10 chars... I love quirky forum rules.)
  10. I've been all over the forums... can't find a thing that explains why I can't post attachments. The FAQ explains how to, but it's inaccurate. Or at least incomplete. I know how to link img's, but I don't want to host files elsewhere. I want to add them as attachments. I finally noticed in my posting permissions: "You may not post attachments" So.... the next question is why?? A search turned up this... what may point to a vBulletin configuration problem?? --------------------------------- From the FAQ:
  11. In a thread I started re: having problems with selecting other ships, user DMagic pointed me to the Haystack mod. I haven't used it yet, but it's supposed to also allow you to select debris and simply get rid of it. (I liked the challenge of building a ship to do it regardless).
  12. Thanks, everyone, for the assistance!! I was going to mention that the "normal" GUI method for this type of action would be a dbl-click. I routinely dbl-click just out of habit, but it's NEVER worked. Glad to hear it's buggy and not just me. And thanks, DMagic. I'll definitely try out haystack!
  13. I swear I've looked all over the wiki... and searched on here. Can't find the answer. Can I select another ship in map mode/view (i.e., take over its control)? I use Tracking Station to select different ships, but it's a few extra painful clicks away. Seems I should be able to select a different ship in map mode. I see people doing it in tutorials, but I can't tell if they are just editing out going back to Tracking Station.
  14. If/when my prior post makes it to the forum, I think I figured out the problem with posting attachments: my posting permissions say "You may not post attachments." New user restriction, I assume??
  15. I just happened upon a mod for shooting debris. I just tried a quick search for it, but couldn't find it again... I think the author misspelled "debris" as I recall, so that's one of the reasons I can't find it again. Had I built a ship for doing this using the EXCELLENT parts from Damned Robotics. Works BEAUTIFULLY. Warning: I'm new to KSP and discovered that the collision function doesn't work in standard time warp... so if you try to do a regular time warp, anything inside the claws will just migrate out. I cleared all my debris before learning of the physical time warp, which I still haven't messed with. I'd show you a screenshot, but unfortunately, after using forums for decades, I can't seem to find the place for uploading attachments (instructions in FAQ are wrong?). Anyone point me to the correct method?
