I too am having problems on Linux. Cinnamon DE on Mint 17.3 crashes 40% of the time (seemingly with no pattern) when I launch the game. The launcher/patcher is completely broken. I've tried adding to a bug report, but it went unacknowleged. http://bugs.kerbalspaceprogram.com/issues/7832
