Hey! I need help!

Hi, @KingSqueaker! Sure we can help!
What do you need help with?

Some basic things:

  • Look up gravity turn on Google, and use them to launch your rockets.
  • Fins should go at the bottom of a rocket, not the top
  • The Solid Rocket Boosters do not need an engine on them
  • Check out this subforum if you have questions
  • Kerbals are as expendable as you want them to be
  • Not Jeb
  • Not Bill
  • Not Bob
  • Not Valintina
  • Just becuase something looks cool doesn't mean that it will work. My best designs are pretty visually simple.

Does that help?

  • "Top heavy" is good, not bad
  • When you get to the point of optimizing launches, adjust throttle to keep time to apoapsis between 35 and 90 seconds once your apoapsis gets past 50 km
  • You can plan each part of a mission pretty precisely with mods like Kerbal Engineer Redux
  • CKAN will install and manage mods for you
  • Many of the things that will annoy you are already fixed in a mod, so search freely
  • Scott Manley can teach you everything you need to know
  • Taking off from the Mun is much, much easier than from Kerbin
  • Flying jet-powered planes to space is as fun as it is unrealistic
  • Rover wheels are going to get much better in 1.1, so don't worry too much about rovers before then

  • Use launch clamps.
  • Install Kerbal Engineer Redux, and make sure your rocket's thrust to weight ratio (TWR) is between 1.3 and 1.7.
  • When you want to land somewhere, check the wiki for if it has an atmosphere or not, so you know what methods to use to land there.
  • Heatshields have more ablator than is necessary for a LKO reentry.
  • Kerbin atmo ends at 70,000m, make sure your periapsis is above that.
  • Have fun!

  • F1 makes screenshots, 'imgur' is a nice way to upload pics or albums to this forum.
  • Post us when something worked so you can gloat.
  • Post us if something didn't work, so others can tell why it didn't.
  • If it's stupid but works, it's not stupid.
  • Find what you like to do in the game.
  • Find what others like to do in game, for those will be fun too.

As HebaruSan said, try Scott Manley's Career Mode for Beginners , it is awesome. It is also a bit outdated since some things have changed like aerodynamics and rocket power, but still vast majority of his designs and planning work like a charm. Anyways, it is good to get started, but once you understand how things work, don't let the tutorials be the only way you play the game, because there's much more. Scott only tries to simplify it to help beginners like me with poor physics knowledge -not to mention aerospace engineering-  get past the difficulty curve of this game and then fly and experiment by themselves.

  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes and fail miserably! I did, everybody did and so will you. Everybody cocks-up big time sooner or later. The important things is to notice WHY you failed. To understand what went wrong and learn from your mistakes.
  • You and only YOU decides how you should play your game. Do what and how YOU want!

  • 2 weeks later...

Fun fact in KSP:

In this simulation there are mostly many different solutions to a specific task, try doing things your way and experience grows on its own, its literally indefinite fun fooling around Kerbin.

Keep your Kerbs alive. You are going to take care of them sooner or later...:)

Happy landings!
