Jool-5 Challange Trials and Tribulations: Taranis

I decided to start a new thread to capture my progress on my Jool-5 Challenge a.k.a. Taranis.

A little on the name: Taranis is the Celtic god of thunder. I originally had everything named "Jool XXXX" but decided that I wanted it to be more flavorful and started looking through Wikipedia's list of deities for inspiration. I think I'll have a mission named after a bunch of Norse or Egyptian gods at some point with each module named after a different god but that's for the future and will probably happen after 1.1 drops.

Anyway, if the judging panel wishes for more screen shots or any of the lift vehicles be re-flown, I can oblige but the payloads are what they are. Honestly, the most agonizing part was docking everything together and I feel like I documented that pretty well. Also a note, to refuel everything, I used infrastructure that was already in orbit from previous missions to refuel the Taranis Transfer vehicle but everything that goes to Jool was screen capped as launched (and some failures).

Update for Feb 9 (FYI, all this stuff was flown Jan 22-24:

So that's it for the assembly. I've been pretty judicious about saves and stuff so I can go back and re-fly certain parts if necessary.

Bop Base assembly, among other shenanigans:

The crew of Taranis have finally arrived at their first destination. Some of them have gotten a little antsy being cooped up and they're excited to get down to the surface of Bop. Val cuts her teeth as a tug driver maneuvering various parts of the spacecraft into position so that the Bop Base can be assembled into the landing configuration.

The base takes some maneuvering to unpack but once it's unpacked into a landing configuration, it makes a great lander.

All right, given that this mission is more or less complete, it has been a while since the last post.

Now that the crew has begun it's task of filling the tanks back up at Bop, they get themselves into a groove of landing and takeoff from Bop.

Cranking in some more Bop visits. The crew is getting sick of this but they understand that this is a necessary part of the mission.

Now that the crew is back together, they're excited to head out to Laythe. Laythe is where the meat of this adventure is hunted. Kerbin and Bop have had much of the prep work done but the main course happens at Laythe. Enjoy.

It got to the point in the mission where the crew realized that they would not be able to successfully complete the mission without more fuel. They made the tough decision to split up and regroup in orbit of Tylo. But first, there's another moon to visit.

After a long arduous journey getting two separate crews to Pol, they start to see some progress in their side quest. The side quest, aptly, felt much longer than the main quest but was weirdly satisfying and refreshing.

The crews have resumed the main quest and Val has earned her stripes as the most BA crew member of the mission. The entire crew is proud of the accomplishments made here as well as their own contributions to this achievement. I for one (welcome our new overlords... wait, side tracked again, it's late for me) I am very proud of this accomplishment.

The next installation of this adventure will be the return home and the conclusion. I hope everyone has enjoyed reading these.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
