How do I make my own Mods?

you have 2 choices. 2 shalt be the number of the choices and the number of the choices shalt be 2:

1: do some custom 3d work and make all the info and stuff for it.

2: modify the .cfg file inside the part file, and if needed to, contact the author for Ok'ing

Also, NEVER release a cfg edit unless it is really useful and not cheaty.

How are plugins made? Is there an api that is leveraged? Or any documentation to work from?

I found the information on the wiki for starting plugin module development, so I think I'm good there.

Anyone have any good code examples/open source material I can learn from? I think I've got navigating Unity's documentation down as well, though using it for the first time will probably be shaky.

All the plugin developers post their source code, or a link to it, so I'd suggest having a look at whichever one most approximates what you want to do.

But of course get their permission and credit them if you end up making a plugin that uses some of their code ;)
