LY-05 Steerable Landing Gear Overstresses when plane is placed on runway

I'm having a problem where the steerable landing gear on my planes overstresses at the slightest touch, preventing me from launching planes.

This happens in both x32 and x64, in Windows. I couldn't accelerate planes at all on the lvl 1 runway, as it was so bumpy that it immediately exploded. Even on the lvl 2 runway as soon as a plane reaches about 100 m/s it overstresses and explodes. Latest attempt the landing gear overstressed as soon as the plane was placed on the runway, before I even started the engines. Any clues what I might be doing wrong, or if anyone else experienced that?

Planes are very simple, 30 parts only.

I have the same sort of issue on sandbox. The (tiny) plane's front gear (the small steerable nose gear) would blow up on spawn-in and that was just setting down on the runway. The smallest retractable gear did not explode upon setting down, however they would explode when I attempted to take off at around 117m/s and pulled back on the stick.

But that would only occur on the flights that I could get down the runway successfully. A majority of my take-offs would would lead to

1.) Nasty yaw/nose gear input using the non-retractable steerable gear at about 50m/s that would ultimately flip the aircraft
2.) violent shaking using the smallest retractable gear that wouldn't flip the craft as quickly but would drive it off the runway.

I can't imagine what the stresses of landing would be like on those gears if if the stress of taking off is too much for them...hopefully they sort this out soon.

I managed to "solve" the issue (I'm able to take off at least now) by downloading the portable version of the game instead of the installer and running that without going through the launcher. I don't use Steam. So the version I installed with the Windows installer is broken, but the plain 1.1.0 download from the store seems to work,

Just thinking about troubles at runway with speed as high as 100 m/s... my designs mostly have 70-80 m/s take-off speed and honestly... 100 m/s is freaking 200 knots! But Concorde take-off speed for example is about 110 m/s, so, that's real by the way.

I was able to create something that did not explode when moving (not even a plane - a kind of a rover - 10m/s max) over the level 2 runway by reducing the friction tweakable to around 0,5, and doing what I've suggested in another topic (however using smaller values of 8000 for stress and 4000 for impact - the originals were 2000 and 1000):

You may want to try the workaround suggested by dwilliam16: edit the files "GearFixed.cfg" and "GearFree.cfg" from "Squad/Parts/Wheel/Landing Gear", and change the values "stressTolerance" and "impactTolerance" from 1,000 to 12,000.

(Do a backup of these files and your game save - just in case)

I'm not really sure what did the trick, but you may want to try both (friction+editing the config), possibly adjusting the numbers up to your taste.

I really hope the problem lies in the gear parts, not in my constructions :D

I just ran a small test using the Aeris A3 in a sandbox game (level 3 runway). One time in the stock configuration (1.) and one time in a modified version (2.) with the front wheel replaced with a LY-05 Steerable Landing Gear and the rear gears replaced with the LY-01 Landing Gear.

  1.  You can land very sloppy, go faster than 100 m/s, don't care too much if you are straight and descend rapidly -> worst case is you bounce (wildly) off the runway and as long as you avoid contact of wings/fuselage with the runway you are fine and can try again.
  2. If you are above ~80 m/s and descend slightly too fast or touch down with the plane yawed starboard/port a few degrees, your LY-01 and LY-05 will pretty much disintegrate instantaneously. You have to be closer to ~60 m/s for a save touchdown, and then you still have to be gentle.

Conclusion: The LY-01 and LY-05 Gears tolerate quite a bit less stress than the similarly sized LY-10 gear. While I do understand that they might be considered inferior parts, I want to point out that they are the first wheels new players encounter in career games and their low durability might cause a lot of frustration. I suggest bumping their durability to the same level as the LY-10 Gear.

Kynnath,

I was able to iron out most of the problems with the LY-05 by tweaking the suspension parameters. Give this .cfg a shot and see if it helps. Be sure to keep a renamed copy of your original .cfg so you can revert if necessary.
