Cacteye literally just uses modules FROM THIS MOD. If it works, this one should work. There is a response from the modder that is only two posts up, where he quoted and answered you. 

As has been previously discussed, in its current form there is no visual queue of when a body becomes discovered, and the pointing of your telescope must be VERY accurate. As a result many users simply mash the research button and don't notice when the message briefly says something different then failed research or what ever (I haven't attempted the mechanic myself yet as I only just launched my first sputnik this career).

In short, it is most likely operator error, which is unsurprising, given that all of this information is available in the last few pages of this thread. 

I was having the problem where bodies were not researched. The only mods installed were Research Bodies, GPP, and dependents. In a new sandbox mission I used the debug menu to edit a telescope into orbit, target an "unknown object", set SAS to track target, open track bodies UI, mash the track button, nothing happens and only negative results. It's worth noting that even in the observatory, no new bodies have been discovered to research. There is something more going on than having accurate body tracking.

I understand that JPLRepo is busy so I will patiently wait for a response. I have tried a bunch of different things and my results have been the same, no bodies can be researched. I have posted my logs as requested and if more information is needed, I will do my best to assist. All I can say is that, I'm having the same problem of "not being able to research bodies", I've done everything reasonable to fix it, both in gameplay (using target tracking), and mods installed (as described earlier), and I'm still having the problem.

It's not working for me in career mode either. I used the same procedure: edit craft into a suitable orbit, set Niven as a target, set SAS to track target, fire away on the research button, only negative results.

ETA: Sorry if I seem like a stick in the mud but I'm having a problem and I don't know why. I've used Research Bodies on an earlier play through and it was great. I wanted to use it again on a wonderful new planet pack (I'm really loving the Ciro system so far) to explore new territory and I've run into this problem. That being said, how can I help?

So I downloaded and compiled the code. The dll I built on my machine is working as expected.

I was experiencing issues with this mod just like many others on this thread.

Not sure what happened, but it seems the currently posted dev build is not working, although the source code is producing the correct result.

I can share the dll if anyone wants.

it seems it doesn't read the config file correctly:

I have been using a working 1.2 version for months now. I even include the cfg I made for GPP in the GPP download so I'm unsure why a recompile was even necessary.

so this version hasn't been working for you? Works for me just fine.

Ok here's the dice guys. Please do not post links to dll files in this thread.
The reason is I do not have the luxury of time of dealing with people raising issues on this thread for dll's and code I did not produce.
Yes I know this mod has been WIP for a while, and I did make statements before the Holiday season that I was going to do so. But things conspired against me.

I'm close to putting out a release. But distractions like this just waste more of my time.
The dev version I released still works in 1.2.2 so there is no need to be re-compiling and posting links to dll's.

EDIT: By the way, parts of that dev build code are All Rights Reserved. If you read the link in the OP and the post that it is linked to it clearly states that. But to clarify that I've added it to the OP in Big bold letters.

This happens to me when I use hyperedit and I have research bodies installed. Probably not a bug, but I assume RB was not developed with hyperedit in mind

Hi. First time poster.

Is it possible to successfully "Track Bodies" without using the "aim at target" SAS? I made a simple probe satellite with the telescope on it and aimed it in the direction of Minmus, and clicked on Track Bodies until I ran out of electrical charge (1600+) multiple times, and never discovered anything. The thing is, I tried something similar in Sandbox, and discovered everything halfway across the system (stock and OPM planets) without targeting anything, just clicking a few times. I didn't use target tracking SAS, because I only have the Octo 1 unlocked. When I started, I set the initial difficulty to the hardest, and I do have a bunch of mods installed. Does Research Bodies depend on the contract system for discoveries? I did recently install Contract Configurator and also Tarsier Space Tech...

I must say, I'm not a huge fan of the random discovery chance mechanic. I feel like the telescope should have a camera function so you can actually see what you're trying to aim at and have a chance of seeing how close you are, and then you just discover it if you get it within view. I tried using Cacteye, but the gui didn't work, and I guess Tarsier's telescopes are farther up the tech tree. Sorry, I'm just ranting, now. Overall, I think the mod is pretty cool.

EDIT: Okay, I'm pointed straight at Minmus in Sandbox, and I can't discover it. As a test, I aimed in a random direction, and found Urlum, Wal, and Tal, no targeting, no real aiming. Setting still at hardest, and still using TB-75M Telescope. Is Minmus bugged?

You will have to move that code into it's own library.

In fact, the phrase All rights reserved is globally obsolete for the purposes of establishing copyright, ever since Nicarauga signed the Buenos Aires Treaty of 1910. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_rights_reserved#Obsolescence

I'll sum up by saying that the MIT License cannot be extended to a variant that reserves all rights in contradiction to the rest of the license.

You are probably right. The original intention was in fact to have it separate. but people badgered me for a 1.2 version.
I'll do a release this weekend. as-is without the contracts stuff but with the Observatory separated out with full rights reserved license.

EDIT: Actually I retract this. I did some research and I can mix software like this as long as both licenses are distributed.
Happy for someone to challenge this.
And btw: that wikipedia reference, my interpretation of that means the term is obsolete but still applies as does the Copyright notice/word.

But yeah use of Hyperedit does bad things. Even in otherwise stock install.

Yes you can. What version are you running?
I plan to spend a bit of time this weekend on this mod to try and get it fixed up and released. See how I go.

Not yet but admittedly I've not tried very hard because I've got 3 testing projects for KSP on my platter right now.  I do know that @Galileo has a working version of RB included with the GPP distro and the very first time I setup GPP and went in to test, it all seemed to be working for me too.  That said, I didn't go deep at all and was using Hyperedit to cheat my way around flight times for spot checks and as mentioned above, RB and Hyperedit don't really cooperate.  It wasn't until I had my much larger install setup that I started seeing actual problems with RB and I'm about 99.999% sure that it's an offending mod, not RB...

In summation, tl;dr or whatever...it does work with 1.2.2 and GPP but you may have other mods causing issues with it.  

My suggestion would be to start with a completely fresh install of KSP in a new directory.  Get GPP up and running with only the required pieces for GPP and include the GPP RB install as your only additional mod.  Your mod list would ONLY have: 

Spoiler

Module Manager

Kopernicus

Modular Flight Integrator

Community Resource Pack

GPP

...and the GPP Research Bodies install included in the GPP zip file.  INSTALL RB NORMALLY FIRST THEN MERGE AND OVERWRITE WITH EVERYTHING IN THE ZIP!!!

Once that's done, start up the game before you add anything else and see if RB is working then.  This will at least give you a clean starting point totally unadulterated from any previous attempts to get it working...

@GreyKestrel @rasta013 Interestingly, I've been getting the impression that not everyone with RB + GPP has met the issue, and some even still happily use the two together. It helps that whatever craft (even the earliest possible one) carrying the RB telescope has SAS and target hold unlocked. It's nice to read that some other mod(s) must be the offender and not the WIP RB itself.

Still no luck.  I created a new installation of the game with just GPP + RB.  I did notice these lines in the RB log file:

That seems odd.  Is the penultimate line saying that the chance to discover a body is zero?  (Despite what's in the database.cfg file.)  I don't know.  It's also weird that the settings in the final line don't match the contents of my database.cfg file.

Try changing the name of Gael and Ciro to Kerbin and Sun and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the idea, but still no luck.  (BTW, great work on your planet pack.  :))

Adding Ciro, Gael, Iota, and Ceti to the deprecated PRIORITIES block got rid of the four "Config not found for *" lines, but it didn't solve the problem.  Changing the IGNORE block by using the names Sun and Kerbin didn't change the behavior of the "Chances" or  "sandbox/Tracking station" lines, however.

Something is causing the problems with those last two lines I originally quoted.  No idea what, though.

It's "working" to a degree for me - I can launch telescopes fine.  Also having no luck getting anything but 'empty space' results whilst tracking Minmus anything, however.
