Unable to place fuel lines?

So, I'm trying to make an Eve lander and I'd like to setup an asparagus formation for my fuel tanks.  The problem is that every time I try to place a fuel line it selects the fuel tank as soon as I place it.  Maybe I'm missing something, but does anyone have any ideas?

Edit - I'm not sure this was as clear as it needs to be.  I have six fuel tanks and when place the first side of the fuel line its fine.  Then I click A to place the second side and it selects the fuel tank, essentially pulling the rest off of the ship.

I had this issue as well on xbox, it worked I think after I reloaded the game up or re-attempted it a few times. Some reason it makes you pick up the fuel tank rather than placing the fuel line to it

Had the same problem. Found out when you go to place the second fuel line part, hold L1. This will still make you pick up the fuel tank, but you'll duplicate it and the fuel line will attach.
