Want to go jets? Better go grab all that orbital science!

Someone illustrated the entire tech tree unlocked barely leaving the KSC, in less than a game hour, orbital certainly isn't necessary.

Well, yes. But what's the point of progression if you can just give yourself enough points to unlock the nodes you want?

And don't tell me "but he actually went around KSC and didn't cheat". That's not much different, except cheating science in is less tedious.

It gives the game an out, in case the devs didn't happen to think of the exact progression you wanted to follow, or you play KSP to the point it gets old and you want to play a progression nobody else has thought of before.

The tech tree and way science progresses is fine for me.

Consider the science-only mode of the game without funds or reputation. In that mode I consider Science points to be an amalgam of all those factors. Bringing back scientific information causes an increase in the resources available to the space program which enables the development of more advanced parts.

Clearly that disconnects somewhat with the separate treatment of funds and reputation in the career mode, but the whole system is necessarily so abstracted anyway it doesn't bother me.
