I concur, this is a much needed feature. The second hardest part of developing a VTOL, behind fuel balancing, is switching between different engine modes. Even having a hotkey for it would be stupidly helpful. +1ing This SO hard.

Adding to this: using KIS and KAS, you can permanently (...or until next docking breaks it again) change root part of your vessel 'on the fly'. This wouldn't help with my VTOL woes (where 'control from' needs to be switched every time you go between horizontal and vertical flight) but it would help @eddiew's rover woes.
