Monopropellant to... Anywhere!

Monoprop to... Anywhere!

Due to popularity of the new mono-rocket

==========================================================================================================================================================================

RULES (And I mean it!)

-No usage of any modded parts, Hyperedit (unless

you can prove you didn't use it), or other cheaty little way of

doing miraculous things. Readouts and visual mods are

acceptable. Mods that allow you to fill normal tanks

with mono prop is also not allowed. However, UbioZur Welding is

permitted.

-Players ship must only use monopropellant as fuel. Usage of fuel tanks

for decoration is acceptable, as long as it contains no other fuel

either than mono prop. Kraken drives are not allowed.

-Pictures must be provided enough to prove that the vessel is

capable of doing what you proclaimed it can do.

If you prefer to show it by video, than great!

-Please do add a name to you ship. I don't to give your ship the

default challenge name.

I don't know if I need more rules because I've never made a challenge.

Put suggestions in the comments.

Each vessel will be marked by the tier of completion for each planet

(Example: Mono Mun gets 5 points; 3 for landing on minus, 1 for flyby of Mun, and 1 for orbit of Kerbin)

Return is Optional. Recovery adds 3 points. If kerbal(s) are onboard, than points multiplied by 1.25. Kerbal must stay alive.

Rather than rating the ships based on the community, I would have a sanctioned rating system.  My example would be:

4 Teirs:

1. Flyby

2. Orbit

3. Landing

4. Landing and return to Kerbin

So for example, landing on Duna is a higher score than just orbiting Duna, but orbiting Jool is better than landing on Duna (score goes up as planets get farther out)

I started plugging in numbers in a spreadsheet to prove that it's impossible to launch into orbit. But it seems that the numbers do add up if you pick wisely.

Hint: get pen, paper & calculator out first. Building this trial & error from the VAB is going to be a nightmare.

Hey all.

I am working on a prototype and there is a bug. Maybe it's a 1.2 thing.

I can work around (Annoyed) it but here it is.

I built a test rocket and when the monoprop is expended on the first stage it starts to burn the next stage. And so on. The engines don't quit. No warning.

So I have to right click a tank per stage "Pin-them" and monitor them. When they show close to zero or starts to over-burn into the next stage the space-bar as to be hit.

I have checked the decouplers and crossfeed isn't enabled. It seem to be a LF thing only.

Thanks for your attention.

Going back to the lab.

PS

If someone can explain this behaviour in a favourable light I would appreciate.

I got to orbit in 1.0.4 on monoprop only, though the part count went nuts: http://imgur.com/a/enDIW

The same craft doesn't work in more recent versions, RCS thrusters now scale their thrust with atmo pressure like regular engines. Should still be possible though.

Well done, @Red Iron Crown. No surely it is possible to get into orbit of Kerbin with only mono!

@Martian Emigrant That's expected, monopropellant does not honor crossfeed rules, it uses a different resource flow mode. The only options are to monitor the stages carefully and drop them when they're empty, or disable tanks in upper stages and enable them after staging.

Thanks.

I though of disabling the tanks but with the number of tanks involved it makes for Royal PITA. Plus I checked Group action is out.

Gonna live with it.

Just made orbit of Kerbin.

Pondering direct ascent or Munar-Orbit-Rendez-vous.

Could you put pictures to prove it?

By the way, does anyone know someone who can make badges?

Prove I made orbit? Yes.

It was a bit hard to redo. But here is the album (Imgur mixed a few).

There was quite a bit of lag. Launching a Munar rocket will be painful.

I am still unsure if I want to do a direct ascent or a MOR.

I lean to DA and Minmus. But I am not sure I will have the time to devote to the endeavour.

PS I have to re-enter Jeb.

EDIT

Recovered Jeb. He is being debriefed.

The Album is amended.5nbWb9rg.png

Thought I'd start things off with a quick orbit and return. Not sure if I get an extra 3 points for landing it back or not.

This was made in 1.2 pre. Seems to be much smaller than the other vehicles submitted so far.

Sorry about the music and the extremely low video quality. Feel free to mute the video; the quality may improve later once the video's done processing but I think everything you need to see is visible.

You should consider a bonus for bringing crew along, as well as having a lower mass. Perhaps divide the capability score by the mass, unless the vehicle is manned.

So for my first attempt at this I achieved Munar orbit ... No mods, No cheats and done by the seat of my pant's with no calculations - By the eye contracting, we can always get it up (getting it back down is where you run into problems)

I could have made it for a flyby of Minmus if I had lined up my trajectory better to slingshot around the Mun

Was a great 30 minute KSP workout

Perhaps you should make separate categories for landing and landing+return. This is primarily because landing on Eve or Laythe is relatively easy, but getting back to Kerbin from the surface is a monumental challenge by comparison.

ok. I'll work on it

Actually I'm not even entirely sure that ascending from Eve is possible with the stock monopropellant propulsion. Monopropellant engines all have ridiculously low Isp so an Eve ascent vehicle that uses monopropellant is probably beyond the current game's scope. That being said, people used to think the same about a fully reusable Eve mission, and that's been done a couple of times now.

Thats why I said it's impossible to return from Eve on the points list.

OK.

I stole some time from myself to do this again-some-more.

This time I claim to have landed a manned Craft on Minmus, orbited the Mun and recovered the vessel and Jeb back to Kerbin.

http://imgur.com/a/jfD1G

The Mun detour cost me a bit. I had to aero-brake through 7 orbits of Kerbin.
