Stock Prop

Recommended Posts

I haven't figured out the trick to free moving bearings yet. I've tried a bit and failed horribly, so I challenge YOU to do it!

Rules:

- No infernal robotics

- No alt+f12 cheats

- No part pack mods

Challenges:

-make a working helicopter

-make a working prop plane

Coincidentally, I've started the prop research yesterday. I'm planning to make quadcopter-like electro craft to deliver rockets/planes at 25km.

Also, there is a simple propeller SSTO concept. It isn't real SSTO for now (2nd stage at 5 km isn't what I wanted), but I'm enough willful engineer to finish it. This kind of orbiting seems to be very boring. Btw, I'll do it.

What do you think, should I make video with flying process and prop engine coustruction?

I'll just put this here

If you play in KSP 1.2 you can ignore the lines about increasing the angular velocity limit

Also made an electric plane pretty quickly. I have some better ones saved somewhere and could make a better one than this, but was too lazy.

More specifics please? If this is a challenge, should it not have a scoring system? Also, are informational mods like KER allowed? Not that KER  would be of much use since propeller planes have virtually unlimited range in bodies with air.

I've made up a scoring system:

+50 points for it working

+35 points for flying around the world

+20 points for every different plane made

+25 points for every different  helicopter made

-10 points for every craft that runs out of fuel before 5 minutes (for engine based helicopters)

Also as a side note, how do you keep the reaction wheels running for a reaction wheel based craft? Also, you can make it an ssto with rockets but don't use the rockets for flight (like if you had aerospike rockets)

KER is allowed.

Every craft has to have a different bearing system, but can rely on the same concept.

hmm... all electro-craft can fly around the world....

and what about badges for this challenge?

Absolutely stable electro prop craft. No yaw issues because of two mirror propellers rolling in opposite directions. Powerful enough to be at higher atmosphere.

Two 1222 kg propellers make 14120 kg craft fly up to 8 km altitude. Actual load: 5 kerbals, 3000 kg of rocket fuel/oxidiser, a lot of science parts (material labs, goo, etc), 2 rocket engines, antenna, lights, batteries. Two opposite engines technology, too.

I didn't invent the electric prop but I did invent the stock turboprop/turboshaft engines in 2013. I also invented the stock coaxial turboshaft helicopter, the variable pitch propeller and "eXpanded Blade Tech".

This is the 77 Industries Azi14 Asura stock turboshaft helicopter:

The 77I-Azi13 is the only stock turboprop to ever circumnavigate Kerbin, with just two fuel stops.

A low part count helicopter based on the Azi14 is the Azi15 Archon:

This one holds the absolute speed record. Unreleased to the public. http://i.imgur.com/WQL8RDC.gifv

Next we have the 77I-Azi12 "Curious Chakora", the first of it's type and what made stock turboprops popular again in 2016, later planes and helicopters often used derivatives of the "Chakora engine"

Yes, I've got there completely fair (and very inefficiently). That kind of planes would survive re-entry very well, at supersonic speed it's a big aerobrake instead of a plane. I even recorded a video explaining how it works, but it's in Russian, cause I didn't plan to show it to English-speaking part of community.

It's required to set engines at very low speed on Duna (and at high atmosphere of other planets), because they'll break down if will rotate too fast. In addition, KSP 1.2 requires powerful antenna, otherwise unmanned modules won't work.

Also, I'm planning to record more videos with low-tech career electroplanes in future. This time, it should be more international.

I've been working on a new type of stock electric plane: solar powered.

2016-10-10%2015-35-53.png

So far I've had mixed success. It currently gives me enough thrust to fly comfortably on Kerbin, but simulated Eve conditions (since that's where I intend to take it in my career save) show that the blades have trouble moving through the thick atmosphere, indicating I need more torque. Another problem is that the propeller and/or the outrunning casing seem(s) to snag when I turn or pitch the aircraft, resulting in a violent shake from the transferred momentum, though the prop restarts again.

Time to release my Adam then. That solar powered Eve amphibious plane is sitting on the HD for months now while completely finished, with manual and all. Very reliable too.

Also, I have the Anista. Electric cargo amphibious plane for Eve, complete with launcher as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

This mission covers Bill's first forays in stock prop engines.  The largest unresolved issue remains rapid descent.  Right now I have to fly into a deliberate stall to descend without the props ripping out of the bearing, or go through the tedium of manually decreasing the trim on all 8 engines.
