Game hangs (Not Responding) on scene change to flight scene

Recommended Posts

This is a newly encountered issue for me in 1.2, despite having the exact same PC.

When changing scenes to flight from the VAB, SPH, or the launch pad in the space center scene, the game hangs (i.e. the task is "Not Responding") for an extremely long time. I've seen hang time of between 5-10 minutes, after which the flight scene loads normally.

Computer specs (from DxDiag):

Spoiler

Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 10586) (10586.th2_release_sec.160328-1908)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU       M 370  @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 3766MB RAM
DirectX Version: 10
Display: NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M

I recognize that my laptop is extremely underpowered, but scene loading has never been like this. Not sure what could be causing this.

[Update]

This appears to be some sort of strange interaction caused by parts clipping through fairings. This issue occurred when using this craft file. Needs further testing.

Bug report, which is further down this thread:

Through testing, I've discovered that this is a result of having multiple fairings as part of the same craft. I made a bug report about this in the bug tracker. It was not affected by having KER installed vs. uninstalled.

http://bugs.kerbalspaceprogram.com/issues/13120

The more fairings added to the craft, the longer load/hang time. The particular craft (attached to my bug report) I was testing had 6 fairings.

Hello mate! Good to see you posting again.  Even if it is because of an issue..

I've noticed 2-3 second pauses in the editor when building a craft with many fairings. Every time I right click, delete or select a part there is that pause..

I've noticed the same problem and actually tracked it to a mod that has not yet been updated: Kerbal Joint Reinforcement. Once I deleted the mod, the hang time between scenes dropped in half. I still have a slight hang but it is not as noticeable as it was before I deleted KJR.

I've got a habit of hanging on to outdated mods in my games so they act as "placeholders" so I will not forget to check on them periodically. I'm beginning to rethink that strategy...

I wonder if others can recreate the same issue, or if it's limited to my machine. Build lots of fairings and see what happens after you go to launch the craft, I guess.

I have tried it with my Atlas V rocket, there are 6-7 in that thing and I see no freezing during scene changes. The int thing is that 2-3 second pause in the editor.

I get this pause (think its same issue u mean) but without ker,kjr or fairing use. Lol gotta luv this game.

ive just been building a ground base and plonking it on runway to test etc no fairings in sight

No, I'm talking about the game freezing on the black loading screen with the Loading graphic in the bottom right corner. Such that the program shows it as Not Responding in Task Manager for 5+ minutes. After that, it loads.

@Majorjim! Try even more fairings until it gets screwy?

You mean launching from the editor to ingame?

Yes. So if I'm working on my shuttle in the VAB (or SPH) then hit launch, the loading screen is where it freezes. Though it also happens when I try to launch directly from the space center scene (by clicking the launch pad and selecting a craft).

Will have a look tomorrow man see if I can cause some loading issues. I doubt it though I have probably one of the fastest SSDs you can currently buy.

New data. I tested a craft with 16 empty fairings, and it loaded normally. I think it has something to do with my fairing-covered SRBs. There must be something about what's inside the fairings, or about how they clip through the fairings, that's causing the issue. Very strange indeed.

Maybe someone could test the craft file?

Maybe it's checking all those extra nodes or something. I will test that this eve and report back.

Well I will be a monkeys uncle. I tried to load your craft from the VAB and the game just hung at the loading screen, I had to force quit the game. At least we know it's not caused by slow hardware.

I suspect I have made the game angry by placing a fairing base on one of the new fairing nodes.

[Edit]

Apparently not. I tried various configurations of just fairings on fairing nodes, clipping through each other. It didn't seem to cause any issue.

Thanks to @Majorjim! who showed this thread to me. Anyways, I have this exact same problem. So I built the N1-L3 rocket which has I believe 6-7 fairings and 4 of them have parts clipping through. It has almost 700 parts and weighs 1,000 tons (irrelevant). I click the green "launch" button at the top and the screen goes to the black loading screen with the little "loading" sign in the bottom right corner. This stays like that for almost exactly 20 minutes (yes, I actually timed that) and then it finally loads up on the launchpad. If the issue is really caused by the fairings, then I know 3-4 places where I can replace them with something similar which may reduce the loading time.

You are more patient than me! Wow, 20 mins..

Anyone made a bug report yet?

@GusTurbo care to make one and include your craft? Link it here if you post one so others can link craft to the report.

Do you know if the fairing has to be built or just have the fairing base to cause the bug?

UPDATE: I reduced the number of fairings to 4 and I reduced the amount of parts that were clipping the fairings, still takes 20 minutes for me.

I posted my bug report in the thread earlier. I've now placed it in the OP. There's a link to the craft file there. Here's the bug report again, for posterity:
