Slippery Slopes

After a few frustrating landings with similar slippery results, I now launch a small lander to scout out a good horizontal location for a larger base. Then I plant one or several flags there, and move the scout out of the way.

This is true too, especially that building a base in flat terrain is much easier. ScanSat scan is helpful too. KER provides 'slope' directly under the craft too, good for final adjustments +/-200m.

I spent good 20 minutes scanning maps and then scouting locations on Gilly for one suitable for a base. High ore content, not too far to other resources, and flat terrain. Since only midlands (which are actually slopes connecting highlands and lowlands) carried a lot of ore, I was in quite a bind. Luckily I found a "saddle" between two highlands, where a relatively small piece of land was flat.

An area that looks flat from orbit may actually be a very rough terrain that on average is horizontal, but contains many tiny hills. That is why I scout ahead to take a look up close.

Minmus obviously has large flats and gently slopes so there scouting is not necessary. But other bodies (e.g. Dres, Pol) are far too bumpy. Flat areas are sometimes only the size of the station, and require detailed scouting, marking and finally also detailed landing.

Just a newby observation, but I found that SAS was the culprit for one of my Mun landers. After I turned that off, my lander stayed put.

SAS doesn't perform well when landed. Even my tiny lander with a Mk1 Command Pod will slide and sometimes tilt enough to tip over (in the opposite direction of the slope!) if I leave SAS on. Its now SOP to turn it off immediately upon touchdown. Only after everything is stable is Jeb allowed to do science.
