Name changes when docking

What determines the name of the combined ship when you dock two ships?

As far as I know it's determined by the type of craft. I do not know the exact numbers but there is a hierarchy structure. Station is near the very top, probe near the very bottom.

Extra tip: you can go through your assembled conglomeration and name  any segments that will be undocked, and then name the main station core last. So your station will have and keep the name it should, and as you undock any taxis, crew return vehicles, and probes, they will take the name you gave that probe core/command module.

I think it's the name of the target ship. But then, I usually dock to larger vessels so my observation my not be correct. And yeah, the docked ships retain their names when they undock.

Also, when ships of the same type dock, I believe part count is used to break ties in the hierarchy.
