New%20logo.png?dl=1

After 50 years of the Kerbal Space Program, Kerbal scientists started to question what other mysteries might be hiding beyond the orbit of Jool. They pointed a telescope at all those distant flickering things in the sky and that day Kerbalkind discovered new planets and even new stars in the neighbourhood of Kerbol!

So ... Time to find out which worlds are waiting for Kerbalkind to discover!

KORLON SYSTEM

Spoiler

The Korlon System contains a K-type subgiant. Although this star is expanding and has destroyed its inner-planets, it has given life to others. This is one of the most distant systems to Kerbol. Korlon is the brightest visible star from the southern hemisphere of Kerbin.

  • Korlon: K-type subgiant (1.05 Kerbol masses)

KELARIS SYSTEM

Spoiler

The Kelaris System contains Kelaris, a F7 yellow supergiant. Kirlim a F6 main sequence star and Kerbos, a G8 main sequence star. The Kerlaris System is inspired by the Polaris system and acts as a navigation system (like Korlon) but for the northern hemisphere.

  • Kelaris: F7 yellow supergiant (5.4 Kerbol masses)
  • Kirlim: F6 main sequence star (1.26 Kerbol masses) -> might become a white dwarf / neutron star

THE ALL

Spoiler

THE ALL is one of the most mysterious celestials in the Kerbal Universe. Is it a star? A black hole or something else? No one seems to know it. The only thing Kerbals know is that "THE ALL is everything and everything is THE ALL". Some astronomers think some kind of object orbits THE ALL. It is the most distant of all the objects in KSS.

* WHY THE NAME "Kerbol StarSystem"?:

Spoiler

2 years ago, this mod started as an expansion of the Kerbol System. Adding 2 stars: Kirb and Kernim with the current planets of Kelin, orbiting Kirb; and the current Kernim system around Kernim. That's why I called it Kerbol StarSystem (because everything was part of the Kerbol System). But as the mod grew, I saw more potential in creating an entire starcluster / galaxy / whatever you call it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* (Common) PROBLEMS:

1. I installed KSS but it doesn't work.

-> You might have done something wrong, make sure you follow the steps and have the right mods installed.

2. I started KSP with KSS and the KSC-screen looks dark / day and night cycle is broken.

-> This is a 'normal' bug when moving Kerbin around another star.

3. My ships overheats.

-> A bug that happens only when using kopernicus versions older than Kopernicus 1.2.2-4. (Just use the latest version!)

4. The orbits of my vessels changed while using KSS.

-> solved thx to @johnnydope

Spoiler

Solution to Common Problem #4 The orbits of my vessels changed while using KSS

As some of you may have noticed, while using Kerbol Starsystem, upon loading your game you will find most of your probes/projects currently in orbital flight are NOT where they are supposed to be. This can be game breaking for a lot of OCD players. Well now there is a fix for the problem that allows you to maintain your save file without problems. Now this process can seem a bit annoying, but after doing it a couple times it goes much faster. (Practice makes perfect) So now for a step by step guide to recover your orbits and flight paths.

Qualifying Factors:

  • you MUST start your game with KSS INSTALLED. (and properly)
  • you MUST ALREADY have a manually created save file to load WITH all your CORRECT orbit data.

Alright introductions aside, moving onto STEP 1 of this guide.

STEP 1:  After initial game boot, and profile load, ENTER the Tracking Station

PxFMdf4.png

Also note these are the correct target orbits im looking to achieve.

9y9R9NV.png

STEP 2:  While in the Tracking Station, take a look at your commnet visualizations and current orbit heights. You will notice both are in disarray.

43sjmaE.png

Now exit the Tracking Station.

STEP 3:  Re-enter the Tracking Station. Now you will notice one of the problems solved. COMMNET is back to normal. However orbits are still very incorrect.

VOGjz0R.png

Now exit the tracking station once more and we move on to FIXING the orbits.

STEP 4:  Hit "ESC" key and select "Load Save".

vPB6M4B.png

STEP 5:  Now select your manually made save file and load it. NOT THE PERSISTENT.SFS FILE.

xi8bwna.png

STEP 6:  After the file re-loads you are DONE!! now were going to verify it worked!! Enter the Tracking station one last time for verification.

zq2XVgJ.png

EVERYTHING is perfect once again. theres the A-27 proper AP

EB60ub5.png

There is the correct PE. Now lets check a second satellite. Double checking doesnt hurt.

PDJM2Ss.png

Sure enough, AP is correct! One last photo.

Mptcpu9.png

And there ya go. PE is correct. FIX proven 100% WORKS!!!

Hope this helps all who need this knowledge.

5. Contracts are broken.

-> Only in 0.5, should work in 0.6!

6. I want to combine KSS with another planetpack.

-> GPP compatibility confirmed, others will be added soon.

7. I want to use several other mods that aren't included / known to be compatible with KSS.

-> Do this at your own risk.

** Your problem can't be solved unless you provide logs / screenshots or at least some evidence of your issue. Try to find a solution on the KSS-thread / other threads first + make sure it is caused by KSS before posting / contacting someone. **

Well considering scatterer atmospheric effects don't work properly for planets around other stars (at least last time I checked), won't the scatterer effects look strange as the planet orbits its star? Won't the light side of the planet face the sun and not its host star because of how scatterer works?

Also, what about that problem with sun flares around bodies other than the sun? Won't you have to wait until that problem is solved before you could release scatterer configs and such for KSS?

Sorry if I seem like a party pooper :P

@Galileo Here's that problem I was talking about with scatterer sun flares. I have a blue sun flare for Vega, and when I look in certain directions, the screen becomes tinted blue (the tint is dependent on the color of the sun flare). I did not have this problem with KSP 1.1 and only appears in 1.2.

Here are the screenshots:

Normal (notice how the skybox looks completely black, as it is supposed to)

Spoiler

iU5JmPA.png

Abnormal (triggered by looking in certain directions. Notice how there is a slight but noticeable blue tint to the screen)

Spoiler

zfGK9aC.png

Strangely, this problem does not occur with the Sun. It only occurs with bodies other than the Sun. If I set the same blue sun flares for the Sun, the problem is non-existent. However, when I set any sun flare for Vega, or any other star for that matter, this problem occurs. I've already told @blackrack about this issue, and he has confirmed that other people are having this same problem.

Strange that in my dev version if GPP,  I have another star orbiting around the sun and it has its own flares and I'm not getting this issue. Maybe I haven't done enough testing though

How far away is the star from the Sun? Maybe that has something to do with it. In RSS Constellations, I have Vega sitting at 1/10 of its distance, so 2.5 light-years which is still pretty far. I'll see if the problem doesn't exist if I have Vega much closer. Also, are you using one of the experimental versions of scatterer? I might as well give it a shot and see if for some reason the problem doesn't exist in one of the experimental scatterer versions.

And this is what happens when you try to make scatterer atmospheric effects when the Sun is not in the same direction as the parent star. From certain angles, it looks fine. From other angles, however, no so much. I'm not sure how @StarCrusher96 is planning on getting around this glaring issue. It would be real nice if there is actually a way to solve this issue with scatterer atmospheres not functioning on bodies not parented to the Sun, as I'd love to have scatterer effects on all of my exoplanets!

You can see how half of the planet looks as it does without scatterer, while one half has scatterer effects facing towards the Sun rather than towards the parent star, in this case Tau Ceti.

pKJOpFq.png

Planet looks relatively nice from this angle

ZKTFJad.png

You can see the sort of "two-face" scatterer thing better from this angle.

BhKBV2N.png

Please tell me you found a way around this @StarCrusher96! I WANT THE KSS EYECANDY TO BE A REALITY :D

@AndrewDrawsPrettyPictures

As I am not into coding and changing mods there is no way around those bugs at this point, but the dev from Scatterer knows the issues and promised me he'd fix them in his next release. I'm just making sure I have everything ready for when the time comes :)

Alright that makes sense. So are you going to wait until those issues are resolved to release KSS with the visual enhancements?

Awesome !!!

With modifying "homeworld ?" propriety in config files should we change  the location of KSC for one of those beautiful planets ?

Okay, great! I wonder why it wasn't a problem in KSP 1.1...
