Apparently they're past the "will dig soon" stage now, and have entered the "already digging" stage, if you can believe it. Source: this video.

TL;DW:

- There's now a giant hole at SpaceX HQ, which the people visiting for the Hyperloop competition weekend were able to see (not visible in the video though)
- The aim is to figure out how to improve tunneling speed by 5 to 10 times, which "should be possible within the limits pf physics"
- Right now they're "sort of muddling along" and "have no idea what [they're] doing", though, so it sounds incredibly experimental
- Ultimately transportation must go "3D" to solve traffic issues, and doing so underground is much preferred to doing it aboveground

Except Tesla is completely different from any Mars rover.
Except Solar City doesn't research or manufacture solar cells.
Except Hyperloop-on-Mars represents an accomplishment so far past any long term that "speculative" is far too conservative a word.
Except any radiation protected living space on Mars is almost certainly going to be shallow and constructed cut-and-cover, and even that is a medium to far term accomplishment.  Boring tunnels on Mars is out there with Hyperloop on Mars.

Sounds more and more like Musk is starting to throw insane stuff out there because nobody is willing to tell him "um, wait...".  A victim of his own ego.

It's not the supplies that are critical, but the traffic at ISS.  Better to get Dragon launched on time so as not to bump alot of other ISS launch schedules.

It should be possible to increase tunneling speeds a lot with an better cutting head, Lasers or water cutting are options here. Explosive shaped charges with is another. 
Main issue is that its lots of companies doing tunneling and making the hole is just part of the work, you have to reinforce it and you better examine the rock you want to drill trough first. 
If you just make the drilling faster you might well be better of selling the patent to somebody who do it today.

i ll add him to my list of whenever if whenever "life is strange like marvel", i might grab a sit with him away from everithing in a natural park, watch the green ray and listen to bird and wind in the tree sharing a drink and a cereal bar with the bears around ^^

Seriously, Mars is a freakin' planet.  Conditions are going to vary wildly from place to place, just as it does on Earth.

I'm perfectly fine with any ballpark backed up by some measurement even if only on a very small measure sample. Is it 10 meters on the deepest spot ever measured or 1000? Is the average 100 m or 10 km? I'm not asking for a detailed map.

Does local geology permit such a project at all ? I mean nature, not law. Watery sediments can easily be miffed if dug into. Also isn't this an area with immanent earthquakes and movements ?

This really sounds at least a little hasty ...
