Console history and internet

just curious what everyone think of the market and platform since console joined the network (let's say ps2 or xbox1) market and update stuff + early access + etc.

- do they offer enough typing help actually to share concept and idea
- are they dumbing down the user by the lack of keyboard or or proper typing helper wich make sharing some sepcific kind of info a bit tedious

i personnally tend to think console are not really in osmosis with the network aspect regarding that ... kinda a bit too much dumbly merchantile & play don't think on a few layers ... wich is bit counter productive regarding the current nowdays gaming market and interenet overall

i ll be curious to read other feeling about that, not especially ksp related but more in general overall gaming market related

Technically consoles have been connected to the internet since the NES through stuff like modem play. I believe Nintendo had a network in development for players to watch TV, receive the news and view the stocks I believe from their NES (may be wrong as to the specifics as it's been a while since I read on this, but it was in development). Not to mention SegaNet which existed very briefly in the 90s which allow players to DL games and play them.

But your referring to more modern games with internet and I say it's both a curse and a blessing. It's a curse since games have been less stable since the debut of the downloadable hotfixes become wide spread. Not to mention, since we've become connected, cheats and secrets have become a subject for those hotfixes killing. Back in the 90s, it used to be what everyone who played video games used to talk about.

The best way to prove this, was through the Mortal Kombat hype during the 90s. Kids used to share secret moves and codes they'd discover or read up by connecting their 1992 computer to their phone and calling specific places to receive information in a new technology known as 'the internet'. However kids would also talk about tricks and cheats for other big games too, like Legend of Zelda, Sonic, any big game would have kids who would spend hours scanning every inch of the game looking for these secrets, but because of the introduction of comparable scores and progress, they've become extinct.

Now because player's experience has to be shown and kept fair, glitches that had cool and potentially unfair effects have been fixed and cheat codes like invincibility, and infinite whatever has become rare. Very sad day.

I think what's interesting is that the line between console and PC gaming has become pretty blurry over the past few years. While the PS2/Xbox were still dedicated systems, the PS3/360 were much more like dumbed-down computers. By the end of their lifetimes, internet had become an assumed thing, rather than a possibility, with post-launch patches eventually transitioning into a norm and something of a crutch for many games. The PS4/Xbox One are now just PCs with funky OSs. Most of the advantages of both consoles and PCs have slowly started to fade as a result - you can plug a keyboard and mouse into a console now, but consoles aren't guaranteed to work as intended anymore, with things like the PS4 Pro existing. So yeah, comparing the two is actually becoming progressively more meaningless.

Original xbox was as pc like as One, probably as MS wanted and easy system to port to with for their entry system.
PS3 / 360 was as you say pretty pc like running background applications and updates became common. Updates are also required for online gaming or rather multiplayer in general as people will discover exploits, some who will break the game.
About dumbing down, one issue with 360 and PS3 was the lack of memory, this was an major issue for large open games like Skyrim or GTA5, to maximize graphic the solution was to make linear games.

And yes with PS4 / One the difference is even smaller, the PS4 pro and the upcoming Xbox version makes this even more so in that you have different models with different performance.
Its not unrealistic that this will continue so with some future console generations will also be two ways compatible as on PC.

thoose consoles need a proper "typing device" per default imho nowdays and since they use internet

it's kinda like hehe we're gonna use interent advantage, while removing one of it's essential component, "newsgroup", "forum", "agora"

if it was oki the first few years of large scale(x1,ps2,ps3), it will become a concern more and more soon imho

not that some keyboard cost are that high nowdays ... while a proper ui is still missing (touch pad keyboard wii u for exemple, but yup a big pad ergonomics side)

analog stick typing aiming the key on the screen ? ... well mostly a tedious joke

(this or red a sticky on the consoles packages: we do recommand you use a keyboard [usb&whatever] with your console) xD
