What is this Kerbal doing?

I have a funny question. What exactly is this Kerbal doing, and what is the thing he's poking at? Is it a strut? Is he afraid of it? Is it because of the weird physics that happen with struts sometimes? I want to understand this!

Theories and ideas are welcome, thanks!

I believe it's a busted flagpole, as seen in this video.

I think it is a strut and I have always thought he was "eyeing" down it.........you know how you look down the length of something to check if it is strait.

Are we looking for joke answers or realistic answers?  Realistic answer is that, like said above, he is eyeing the strut/pipe/whatever to make sure it is straight.  I'm assuming it was recently machined as a prototype or something.  Or maybe hes in charge of QC (Quality Control) for struts.

But then again that answer is kinda boring, isn't it?

At the risk of sounding like an Internet know-it-all, ACTUALLY, he's trying to assemble a flag. Someone mentioned this above and referenced a video. On Squad's youtube page there's a video of the Kerbals doing various thing (the wrong way) including this Kerbal, attempting to deploy a flag and failing.

Well there I go again assuming and not reading

Jusy watched that promo video that it comes from... Quite amusing! Those flags look dangerous!
