A mod for "happiness"?

Are you talking something like life support?

There are few good life support mods, life TAC Life support nd USI Life support. But they don't add happiness.

And why without module manager?

EDIT: Quick googling gave me this planning thread. But i am pretty sure developing of it is dead.

Is there a simple mod that adds happiness without the need of module manager?

Module Manager is likely going to be a hard requirement for pretty much anything that changes vessels and the Kerbals that are onboard these vessels, because of how the game is built. A vessel's properties are the sum of the properties of its parts, and the properties of parts are defined and saved in a specific format that (IIRC) Squad created, called ConfigNode. If you want to give a vessel a new property or capability, chances are that you need to tell the vessel that by adding said information to the ConfigNode definition of a relevant part that the vessel should include. And not only parts use this system - many other things in KSP are also written in ConfigNode. Including, but not limited to: contract definitions, resource definitions, science experiment text blurbs, the parameters for the physics simulation, and (with some caveats) savegames.

This is where Module Manager comes in. It was created specifically to modify ConfigNode definitions for you, so you don't have to edit or replace the base files (which has like a million downsides by comparison). And because it so elegantly does something so vital, it has become the de-facto dependency for KSP modding as we know it.
