Neuralink

So, uh, Elon has launched a new company, Neuralink:

http://nerdist.com/elon-musk-founds-new-company-neuralink-to-turn-us-all-into-cyborgs/

Quote from the article;

But the actual neural lace is the moonshot idea; the longer-term, more groundbreaking goal like SpaceX’s trip to Mars or Tesla’s production of a vast fleet of electric self-driving vehicles. In the near-term, it seems the goals of the company are far less sci-fi, and deal with technologically treating neurological disorders like depression or epilepsy with brain-machine interfaces. Sources haven’t apparently given out much detail about what Neuralink may produce in the next few years, but it seems that near-term products may include brain implants built with more basic neurostimulators (a.k.a. “brain pacemakers”), like those used to treat Parkinson’s disease.

Also, new WBW article soon!

It's all part of his evil plan to turn us into his personal zombie army, with self-driving Tesla tanks. He'll use the zombies to build his Mars Colonial Transporters (or whatever he calls them now) and the autonomous Teslas to bring everyone to the launch sites, so he can colonize Mars and beyond!

(I bet he lurks on these forums. I wonder what username he hides under)

Hooking ourselves up to computers seems dangerous. We hooked our houses up to computers and now many have been infected by malware like mirai. I don't want to know what a human botnet would do.

To be pedantic: having your house hooked up to a computer is not the problem, it's having that computer hooked up to a bunch of other computers. Of course there's no way that if a neural lace is ever made it wouldn't be connected to the internet.

That's how the BattleStar Galactica survived the Cylon attack. Since its many computers were not networked together, the Cylon virus couldn't shut down the whole thing.

Meh... AI, autonomous vehicles, giant space ships, vessel names with a significant gravitas shortfall... He is trying to make The Culture happen!

Hypeloop not panning out?

The success of Falcon 9 has little to no bearing on his other projects. He has, however, produced a cult of personality akin to the Wizard of Menlo Park, despite being a clear and apparent layman.

Tesla is doing remarkably well (although the stock has been inflated beyond reason*.  This can be hazardous to the company in question unless they can buy something like Alcoa** or some other less exciting company with decent income).  Solar city seemed to be doing ok, and after being bought by Tesla is presumably equally over-valued.  Hyperloop was something Musk didn't sink his own money in, but flung it out for others to run with (and/or lose their shirts).  There is less hype about "the Boring company", but few here are certain it isn't a hoax.

* The goal of Tesla was to steer the market to build solar cars.  Presumably the exit strategy was to be bought by GM.  According to Wall Street, they expect Tesla to be more likely to buy GM.
** Alcoa appears to be losing money, but aluminum is sometimes called "frozen electricity" since most of the cost is in the electricity needed to produce it.  I wanted to state a "boring company", but Elon beat me to it.

Brain implants are already a thing of the present. However, as you might guess, brain surgery is extremely dangerous. So for now, brain implants are limited to the cases where they help really serious quality of life issues, like paralysis and severe seizure disorders. Because those are the only rewards that medically justify the risks.

So far.

Neuroscience is a scientific discipline that studies the structure, function, development, genetics, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, pathology of the nervous system, and psychology. Traditionally it was seen as a branch of biological sciences.

However, recently there has been a convergence of interest from other disciplines, including chemistry, computer science, statistics, physics, philosophy, mathematics, and medicine.

The scope of neuroscience has now broadened to include any systematic scientific experimental and theoretical investigation of the central and peripheral nervous system of biological organisms. The methodologies employed by neuroscientists have been enormously expanded, from biochemical and genetic analysis of dynamics of individual nerve cells and their molecular constituents to imaging representations of perceptual and motor tasks in the brain.

Furthermore, neuroscience is at the frontier of investigation of the brain and mind. The study of the brain is becoming the cornerstone in understanding how we perceive and interact with the external world and, in particular, how human experience and human biology influence each other. It is likely that the study of the brain will become one of the central intellectual endeavors in the coming decades.
