KSP x64 bit crashes after loadscreen

Recommended Posts

Hi there! I've been trying to load the game (v1.2.2) since early morning today and everytime it finishes loading, it crahes with the standard "game crashed" dialog.

When I check the crash folder, this are the output files' contents:

error.txt

output_log.txt

crash.dmp (I don't know if this one is relevant)

My game contains the following mods (155 in total, all instaled via CKAN v1.22.1-0-g174271a beta):

I play on an Acer laptop with the following specs:

  • Processor: AMD A12-9700P Radeon R7, 10 compute cores 4C+6G 2.50GHz (12th gen)
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR4
  • Graphic: Radeon R7
    • Total Mem: 8426 MB
    • Dedicated Mem: 512 MB
    • Shared Mem: 7914 MB
  • Windows 10 Home

I know it's not the best gaming PC/Laptop out there, but it is what I got and I wasn't having problems with KSP while playing heavily modded games (190+ mods) but this one time. I got the game via Steam, if that matters.

Please, let me know if any other info is needed and I apreciate any help I can get.

Integrated GPU with a ton of shared RAM.... Is this a recent occurrence (i.e. KSP was working before)? If so, what were the last things you recall doing between the last time KSP ran correctly and when it started crashing like this? (e.g. Changed a system setting, updated drivers/software, installed a new mod, etc.)

The output log would be really handy. Even just the last like 50 lines of it (as that would hopefully be what is related to the crash.)

The error log notes a access violation. In my experience it means you either ran out of RAM and/or the game (or a plugin-based mod running in the game) tried to do something stupid. I have a feeling the shared RAM is part of the problem.

Have you attempted to run the game in DX11 mode? (You need to set a couple of command-line switches to force it.) Don't think it'll help considering the RAM scenario, but DX11 seems to be a bit better/smarter about RAM usage for graphics in KSP/Unity.

Otherwise, I say dial back on the mods a bit and see if it starts. Start with the biggest part mods first (like B9) and see if it starts. If yes, you're probably hitting your RAM limit. (You can keep the Windows Task Manager open and keep an eye on KSP's memory usage to double-check.) Switch to plugins next. If it takes removing plugins, you may have a mod conflict somewhere.

But really, get that output log available. It'll help us help you. (I would think this is a RAM issue given the PC specs listed and the large collection of mods...)

I uploaded the last lines of the output file, I checked the RAM usage before your answer, just by chance, and it was around 45% (maybe less) usage when it crashed.

Last night was the last time KSP worked (with mods) and the only thing I did between game launches was turn off the PC for the night and then turn it on to play.

I was about to check the Dx11 thing but I got and idea: I opened the launcher, went into advance settings and checked AMD compatibility and launched the game.

It just crashed loading Hangar mod:

  • KSP was using 2,294,808 K of RAM
  • Total RAM usage was 5.8 GB (37% of total RAM)

I'm going to delete that specific mod and load again. If it fails, I'm checking with Dx11, then I'm going the long, manual check way.

Game loaded 0.2GB more of RAM (6.0 GB in total) before crashing loading Firespitter. I'm checking DX11 mode.

DX11 also failed. I'm going to do a clean install and check mod by mod. Maybe CKAN updated something.

Thank you for those suggestions, I'll wait for any update you can have with the output log file before selecting your answer as best (and only).

Hmm... I personally can't see anything indicative in the output log. Have you checked the ksp_log.txt file as well? It tracks what the game is doing while running. Looking at the end of it should give you a clue as to what was going on when a crash happens. Maybe post that as well. (Though I find it odd you're now crashing on different mods during start-up.) Note: that log can get pretty big though.

If you wind up having to manually check the mods, keep CKAN off and MOVE half the mods out the GameData folder to someplace temporary and start the game. If it starts, exit and swap out the two sets of mods and test again. If it still works, it's probably a mod conflict of some sort. If it crashes in either attempt, you know which half to look at. Repeat the process by halving each subsequent mod set you identify as causing the crash. This should reduce the number of KSP starts and the time you spend looking for the offending mod if it's just a compatibility issue. Mod conflicts will be a bit harder since you need to find the combination of mods fighting one another.

Another option is to start by removing any mods that are plugin-based first (they include or are just a *.dll file; though I'd probably leave Module Manager there for the time being.) However, this COULD cause KSP to hang on loading if any plugins are hard dependencies for another mod. (i.e. A mod assumes the plugin is always available without an explicit check. This will be true with mods that bundle their dependencies or based on their own collection of utilities, like USI or WBI.) This pretty much requires knowing which mods are inter-related. I'd try the previous paragraph first before moving on to a clean install test next, though, unless you know what mods are hard-dependent on others.

I haven't checked the ksp_log.txt file. Once I do, I will upload the last bits of it. Maybe it is a corrupt .dll or a damaged game file.

Anyway, today I have to wait untill late evening to do all this, as for now I'm at work.

This is what I might do (in order):

1- Copy the game directory as a backup; Do a clean install and copy the "Game Data" folder into the new install. (In case it is a damaged game file)

2- Find the conflicting mods with your method and re-install the conflicting mod.

3- Use CKAN to install again the same mods into the new install [Once I restore it]. (To see if it was a download issue or a corrupted .dll)

Regardless, I will get the ksp_log.txt uploaded as soon as I can. I really apreciate your help, you are giving me enought resources in case this happens again.

I found the KSP log and from the very beggining it started showing errors:

I'm finding this "can't create file" kinda odd, and I believe my issue could be a permissions problem, maybe?

I'm about to start with the troubleshooting I described before. I will update once I finish them all.

It looks like your ModuleManager.dll is missing or corrupt. All the CFG file errors are from mods that use MM to EDIT part CFGs. MM uses a different syntax, so KSP won't know what to do with those files without MM. (*.cfg are used by both MM and KSP for configurations/settings.)

There's a possibility the KSP install itself is corrupt somehow if it can't compile parts, but I'd look at ModuleManager first. MM is needed for pretty much 99% of the time for mods to function. You could just stop the main MM thread and grab a fresh copy.

CKAN has been known (so I've heard) to break installations for no apparent reason or some such. I personally install and manage my mods by hand. (I tried CKAN once back in the 0.90 days. Didn't care for it; wasn't all that robust IMHO.) Some users can get away with it, but now that I think about it, it tends to be the heavily modded CKAN users that run into trouble at some point. Those who use less mods tend to not have many problem if at all. (Maybe it's just me, but CKAN users tend to run mod counts of over 100 whenever I see support requests...) Not to bash completely on CKAN, but when I run into mod/KSP problems, I tend to have an idea of what could be causing it because I know what I last did to KSP or a mod; I had to touch them to make changes. CKAN itself doesn't test for incompatibilities or anything; that's all based on user feedback or modder declarations.

Anyway, TL;DR - Check ModuleManager. The errors point to it somehow missing, being corrupt, or just not loading for some reason because KSP has no clue what to do with CFG files that I know depend on MM.

I've found it was L-Tech mod the one making my game crash so far. I'm missing 50~ mods to install.

I used to download the mods manually, but downloading 150+ files and keeping them up tu date is a true pain. I've been using CKAN for a month now without issues until this one. Right now I've tested downloading MM fresh from the thread and put it into the old install. It didn't help.

Maybe I will go back to manually install them if I can't make this workout.

I went into the old install folder and deleted the L-Tech folder to see if it was just that one, and yes. Aparently it was the cause of my 3 days without KSP.

So, in summary, I grabbed MM from its thread and deleted L-Tech and now the game loads.

Thank you a lot! I can finally play again!

Hi @FerrerMacea, thanks a lot - I wasn't playing for a while and after updating with CKAN my Mods, I got the same problem.

After deleting L-Tech it works again!

Update - I just installed the older L-Tech Version 4.3 and it worked also.

And no, I dont use KEI, @linuxgurugamer

So it seems L-Tech updated version is the problem... I will install v4.3 and try it.

Do you have KEI installed?  If so, that might be the problem as well, the author has refused to fix some known bug, even with the fix submitted with a PR

Isn't that one the "One-click Full KSC science"? If so, I don't even like it.
