All mods are placed in the GameData file folder within the KSP folder (i.e. KSP_OSX/GameData). The actual mod should be contained in the GameData folder of the mod you download. Simply take the contents inside the Mod's GameData folder copy and paste them in the GameData folder within KSP. Sometimes you may see a folder that says "old parts" or "depreciated parts" or something like that. Usually not installing those folder won't cause a problem.
