Grid Fins and Super Heavy Landing Legs in Kerbal Space Program

Recommended Posts

Well, if you don't mind mods, well...

I'm pretty sure Necrobones has large landing legs in at least one of his mods, Roverdude's sounding rockets mod has grid fins, and I think SXT might have grid fins.

No guarantee that the grid fins work with FAR; I suspect FAR would voxelize them as bricks and not properly handle them.

I agree that the stock game needs this kind of thing. Landing our ultra-mega-super-huge ITS and F9R replicas is quite difficult when we have to land on the engine bells and make do with itty-bitty airbrakes that for some reason can only handle 1200K when opened :\

If I understand correctly, all the current mod gridfins are "cheaty" because the current aero model doesn't properly handle them.

It's not the aero, it's the part.  You can't really have a collision mesh with the complexity of a grid fin.  Instead of a grid, it simply becomes a flat piece like any other control surface and the "air" cannot flow through the grid.
