.17 Update and Mod Compatibility

This game is in alpha, things are bound to break. Our saves will likely break due to planets and the new scenarios, most mods will survive, in one of Nova Sillisko's pictures, he is driving around on a tiny moonlet with the cart mod.

From the dev blag it looks like our persistent save is safe for now, but no guarantees.

The feeling I get from the 0.17 planned changes and dev blogs is that this is generally a low impact release. However there are no certainties.

It's always best to start with a fresh install unless you're testing the updater. The reason being is that any bugs that crop up might be due to an incompatibility that wouldn't happen between full version releases. This causes people and the devs to waste time tracking down an issue that won't occur in the future.

When HavesteR was discussing the fix he made to the fuel bug, he said that some addons might need to be rewritten.

Yes, but the old (buggy) fuel code is still there, so mods could still work. I said plugins would possibly need a revision because authors will probably want to use the improved system instead of the old one, which is now deprecated.

But as everyone said, there are never any guarantess for backwards compatibility. If we can avoid breaking old saves, all the better, but we don't go out of our way to preserve it... At this point in development, that would be a huge waste of effort. :)

As the game reaches scope-completion, though, chances are that there will be less and less changes to the file formats, and these compatibility breaks will become less common.

Cheers
