Ever since the industrial revolution, carbon emissions from humans have greatly increased. However, we do not know how these increased levels of CO2 will affect the growth of modern day plants and whether or not plants with different pathways have different outcomes. Our project dives deeper into this important question and furthers our understanding of what this could mean for the future of plant life on planet Earth. We built two chambers and had each containing identical plants, with one chamber’s plants growing in an almost 100% CO2 environment. The hypothesis that we thought of was that the increased levels of CO2 would help the plants grow better and faster. We accidentally froze the plants in the first week by spraying them with liquid CO2, but were able to recover the experiment. Although we could not get in all the time for the experiment that planned for due to this setback, we were able to get enough data and observations to draw several conclusions. We grew the plants for three weeks after the freezing and have shown that the plants growing in the 100% CO2 environment looked significantly healthier and had more living leaves. The experiment supported our hypothesis by showing that the plants in the chamber with more CO2 grew healthier and faster.
