Maximum Orbital Speed

Recommended Posts

I\'ll kick off this challenge with a really low mark. This is using stock parts, but should be very easy to beat. I didn\'t even really build a craft for this purpose, I just had one that I was using for Mun landings and started messing around with orbits.

The opening bid with stock parts is 23 645.1 m/s

That still registers escape velocities...

All that is is just a marker of surface velocity (because the planet\'s rotating) and orbital velocity (ignoring planetary rotation)

Yeah, a hyperbolic trajectory (escape) can be considered a type of orbit.

45,008.3 m/s

Obtained by lowering the periapsis of my heliocentric orbit to 1 Gm.

That\'s what I\'m talking about! Now I need to rebuild Big and Tall...

Went checking Sunspots from the underside 8)

188km/s @ 63km from the sun

and yes i cheated with the fuel, so its unofficial.

Strangest thing is im still getting more speed going away from the sun. I smell some bug there.

Edit: no bug, its just me 'entering' the sun, looks like the sun has some physical dimensions, just no surface to crash into.

214km/s @ -14000km inside the sun.

A new record: 66403.2 m/s

According to Wolfram Alpha:

~~ 1.1 × escape velocity at the 1-atmosphere level of Jupiter ( 59540 m/s )

~~ 0.95 × Helios 2 solar probe speed (fastest man-made object) (~~ 70200 m/s )

148540 mph (miles per hour)

I bet that speed on Helios 2 was Earth-relative, though. Just by being on Earth, you\'re going about 30 000 m/s around the Sun.
