Vall Exploration Challenge [SPOILERS: Duna/Vall]

Recommended Posts

Oh man!

Does it have docking capability with the transfer stage then?

Does it have SSTO capability on Kerban?

The ascent stage docks with to the return stage (four ascent stages on the return stage), but the landers get out to Vall on a separate IP stage.

Time to get engineering :P oh and btw if i try easy mode than i don't have to bring my kerbals back

It is true that you can complete the challenge without returning them home, but you lose a lot of points (2 per kerbal)....

edit: You could probably use the "Overbudget" allowance to at least bring some back and still be ahead of the game.

That's awesome! What had Jeb out there by himself?

He decided to hop on I think :I Its been a while since I launched that mission. I hope to be finishing it soon though!

Oh and only room for one. So I guess you could say Jeb is the only Kerbin who would stay in his normal mind for a number of years alone in space.

I'm in the same boat, requesting extended mission time.

Turns out, my landers don't have enough to return to the parent craft without a complicated monoprop realignment and docking with one of the satellites (that handily run on pure 'prop)

Thank you for that mission objective dude, without it my craft would be stranded.

Nerd-porn inbound:

Got a question, Can I add life support? SO I have to bring back my kerbals. And also, How the heck do i get to jool? Can get to duna but not the outer planets..

ok. so my mission has a total of 74 pictures... so imma create a new forum and put a link here: http://imgur.com/a/rD885 (THIS IS A LINK IN PROGRESS)

I totally dig the SR-71-look on Vall! :D If you start a thread somewhere, drop in the link.

I did consider creating specific rules for life-support, but I don't know enough about the mods to know how to accommodate it in the rules in a balanced way. Got ideas?

Getting out to Jool is no harder than getting to Duna, just takes more delta-v. I just use the Interactive Illustrated Interplanetary Guide and Calculator for KSP and Kerbal Alarm Clock. The harder part is performing the aerocapture around Jool to a prograde orbit on Vall's inclination.

It looks like a blackbird? xD I didn't think of that you're right! I'll put the link here when ready: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/58923-Jeb-s-Vall-Adventure%21-%28-VERY-pic-heavy%29?p=791389#post791389

some simple questions.

1> How are people figuring their mass without mech jeb or something like. I it simple paper and pencil maths, or some other mod that will fork over the info?

2> SMART stands for what. Again is this another mod I am not aware of or just a rover/probe with unmanned control?

3> No bonus points for landing the gang at Duna first to confirm the map on the side of the face?

(** "With my own eyes: +15 points. Land at least one Kerbal at the face of Duna to confirm the Vall markings before landing at Val. This Kerbal must return from Duna and lkand with everyone else on Duna.

** "Turn the keys at the same time: +5 Land a Kerbal at the Face at the same time as you have a crew on Val. That way some one is there to see if the face changes from the activities on Val.)

  1. Personally, I just check their mass once I get the parts into LKO. Alternately, you could "launch" just the payload and check the mass while still on the ground. To view the mass, go to 'map' view and click on the 'i' button to get the part count and mass of the 'focussed' vessel.
  2. "SMART" - Science Measuring and Automated Remote Transmission: Not a mod. Anything can be SMART if it includes a continuously powered probe core, any science part and a communication part (probe, lander, rover, etc..).
  3. That's a pretty cool idea! Unfortunately, it really wouldn't be fair to add those points this far into the thread due to the the mass-restriction and that some people have already designed much if not all of their spacecraft. That doesn't prevent you from doing it without scoring and incorporating your Duna mission findings into "I have a theory: Using observations made at an anomaly, develop a theory around the anomaly and write a post about it +5." Other "Duna" challenges (not a definitive list): Duna Permanent Outpost Mission Architecture Challenge, Kapricorn One !!!, Duna Apollo Style

I didn't even check my ships mass :I I kinda just shoved it full of as much fuel as I could within reason and had a small stage I thought I could land with. This was actually my first flight without any use of mechjeb or flight control there. I didn't even bother checking Delta-v (which is why I couldn't make it back in the same flight) I used mechjeb for my rescue mission time window and Delta-v though. Nothing more

It didn't feel "right" using a career mode save file where I didn't legitimately unlock the tech tree, so I started a new Vall Space Program save for this challenge. Just finished unlocking the tech tree and will be resuming the Vall challenge once RL lets me.. :D

Historical account of Jeb, Bill, Bob and Gusly unlocking the tech tree.

Landing next to the Munar transfer stage that amazingly didn't blow up..

...where's the "Death Engineering" fun in that?!?

[Mission Report 2 - Kerson Kerman Arrives on the Scene]

In this report, we meet Kerson Kerman, efficiency expert. Is he hiding something? Who is his assistant? The Vall Lander gets redesigned, Vall station gets to orbit, and Kessler Kerman shares his view of space debris.
