New update released

http://spacedock.info/mod/329/Universal Storage

Version 1.1.0.13 for Kerbal Space Program 1.1.2

Released on 2016-06-21

  • Kerbalism will now unlock the appropriate parts
  • Stack end caps are now back (the node issue that made them very annoying to use appears to have been fixed in the current version of KSP)
  • Cleaned up for bad module manager code (thanks to the various posts on the forums for pointing it out)
  • Modular fuel tanks code included (thanks again to forum posts)
  • Latest Community Resource Pack

*Balance depends on the usage values you set in Kerbalism, the part capacities are set to work with the levels used by TAC Life Support, which are closely based on NASA data for Humans. If you use reduced resource consumption values then you may find the Universal Storage parts hold a lot of stuff.

@Paul Kingtiger - FYI, Spacedock still reports it as 1.1.2 (presumably  because there was no "1.1.3" when you posted it Monday eve)

Also, is Universal Storage 2 imminent?  Looking forward to batteries and whatever else you cooked up!

Small request: Can you make your Universal Storage hydrogen storage and hydrogen consuming parts compatible with Nertea's CryoTanks' "LqdHydrogen" resource? Your part-descriptions say that the hydrogen in your parts is cryogenic LH₂, so it would make sense for it to be compatible with Nertea's cryo engines and cryo tanks, yes?

@Paul Kingtiger

I would like to get something confirmed. The Hydrogen Gas Tank Wedge, at which psi is it compressed, it appears to be about 400 psi, am I correct? My I ask why use chose this specific psi?

KSPI-E contains a switchable cryogenic cooled wegde which contains many cryo resources including LqdHydrogen

what I mean is, the Sabatier Reactor and the Alkaline Fuel Cell both use "Hydrogen" where which is NOT compatible with LqdHydrogen. Is it possible for there to be a way to allow these two items to have the option of using the LqdHydrogen resource?

Either that, or do is there a way for the boil-off from LqdHydrogen tanks to replenish the Hydrogen tanks for the Sabatier and Alkaline Fuel Cells?

The stock resource converted is very limited in this respect. The only way to implement it now would be to copy the existing resource converter and modify input resources type and amount

maybe call it "Cryogenic Boil-off Scavenger Unit"? ULA is working on such a thing for real-life use on cryogenically fueled rocket-stages.

Main thing we would need to figure out is how many units of Nertea's LqdHydrogen from his Cryo-tanks would equal how many units of Hydrogen in these Universal Storage Hydrogen-tank wedges.

Of cource it could be, but not any stock partmodule. I experimented  with this feature this in IFS, but never got it finished due to problems with the stock Temperature modeling, perhaps I should try it again

One thing I also feel would vastly improve usability of the various Resource Conversion wedges in Universal Storage would be to give them masses that aren't so different from one another as to hinder me from keeping the vehicle's center-of-gravity as close as possible to the vehicle's centerline.

Another small request: Make the Sabatier Reactor wedge only consume carbon dioxide and electricity, no hydrogen, and have it output waste and oxygen. Or, better yet, Make that a separate part and call it a CO2 Scrubber

The TAC-LS part most likely includes a pyrolysis unit and an electrolysis unit for handling the methane and water outputs of the Sabatier reaction.

The methane is heated without oxygen, decomposing it to H2 (gas) and C (solid). The H2 is re-used in the Sabatier section while the C is output as waste.
The water is electrically split into H2 (gas) and O2 (gas). The H2 is re-used in the Sabatier section while the O2 is available for breathing.

Since the hydrogen is recycled (and since perfect efficiency seems to be assumed), no additional hydrogen is needed to operate the part. Perhaps losses are being recovered through pyrolysis of other hydrocarbons in the atmosphere such as volatile metabolic byproducts.

Sounds neat. Would it be possible to include a pyrolysis wedge in the Universal Storage system?

The sabatier reaction is CO2 + 4 H2 → CH4 + 2 H2O + energy, having it do anything else makes no sense at all. A CO2 scrubber does nothing more than remove CO2 so making it convert resources makes no sense either.

Agreed.  The only deviation from the above is to have the CH4 represented as liquid fuel (which is can be used as so not a massive stretch).  If you use real fuels then this can easilly be changed to actual Liquid Methane.

Many of the CFG-Files in Version 1.1.0.14 are older than Version 1.1.0.13. Is this intended?

Hmm, no.  It shouldn't matter but I've published an update to be safe.

@Paul Kingtiger What about my suggestion of scavenging LH2 boil-off from @Nertea's cryo fuels as a source of Hydrogen for the Sabatier reactor?

That's not something we'd include in the core mod, but you're welcome to publish a config file or add the code to cryo fuels.

  • 3 weeks later...

It would be nice if there could be specialised part for a kOS processor. Perhaps such a part could be added to this mod. Currently, i'm using a KIS container as such as i'm not using KIS (a specialised part would be better, of course ). It only takes a modded cfg file.

For those interested: Here is the cfg file. Add it to the US_1R110_Wedge_KISContainer directory. Or if preferred, place it in a seperate directory but then you'll need to copy KASContainer.dds and model.mu from the US_1R110_Wedge_KISContainer directory to the new directory.
