I was the first person to make a duna SSTO that used ion engines

I also managed this back in early .23.5, Not sure if anyone else had landed a asteroid on the VAB on rocket engines legitimately before this though. May have been the first but I have no clue.

Just a little surface base!

Now I just need to figure out how to get it to Ike.

Awwww, that's adorable! :D

A well placed skycrane with an array of reaction wheels might do the trick. You won't get to launch it on a pretty rocket without some clever building, but it may be the easiest way to do it without integrating a set of rockets and tanks to the base itself.

Quite happy with this one:

Did somebody tell you that Mk2 cargo bays are too small to hold anything useful?

Stop listening to that person. They don't know what they're talking about.

Instead, come fly the new Kerbodyne Investigator. Long range, ample performance and two integrated exploration vehicles: probe and rover. Deployable, recoverable, highly capable. Explore the solar system for nothing more than the cost of the fuel.

Simple lift off.

screenshot657_zpscbf51337.jpg

And easy climb performance.

screenshot658_zps5733f04b.jpg

Stable under time acceleration.

screenshot659_zps15a1f93c.jpg

Cruise to orbit on the nuke.

screenshot663_zpsd5c616fd.jpg

screenshot665_zpsec716f44.jpg

5,000m/s of ÃŽâ€V still in the tanks.

screenshot666_zps42182699.jpg

Time for the first trick.

screenshot667_zpsdcbffb8c.jpg

Release the drone.

screenshot668_zps0d28ab4f.jpg

A full science payload, 10G thrust and a decent chunk of ÃŽâ€V. Sufficient RCS reserve on board to refill the probe several times over.

Use of thrust limiters recommended for fine manoeuvring; even at minimal throttle, this thing has a lot of kick. Action group 9 will disable the payload RCS during flight, while action group 8 toggles the probe's monoprop propulsion.

screenshot669_zpse33c37f7.jpg

Nuclear propulsion makes Munar or interplanetary travel easy. RAPIERs remain in reserve in case of the need for emergency thrust during landing.

screenshot670_zpsac1242fc.jpg

Vernors to soften the touchdown; simple to land in air or vacuum.

screenshot671_zpsdda66737.jpg

And now for the second trick; open the payload doors...

screenshot672_zps1b493830.jpg

...and drop the cargo.

screenshot674_zpsbdaa0318.jpg

Rovey goodness.

screenshot677_zps8ae9111c.jpg

Able to self-right with RCS if flipped. Onboard probe core permits unKerballed operation.

screenshot679_zps0b65ac04.jpg

To recover: first park your rover near the rear of the bay.

screenshot681_zps9b36e810.jpg

Raise the rover on its landing struts.

screenshot682_zps618b7852.jpg

Before lowering the plane's landing gear.

screenshot683_zpsfe74172b.jpg

Precise alignment not required.

screenshot684_zps04ca798f.jpg

Use the rover's RCS to push up the last few inches. The rover has sufficient thrust to fly even in full Kerbin gravity. Retract the struts after docking, and redeploy the mothership's landing gear.

screenshot685_zps78e0a810.jpg

Not bad aesthetically, either.

Does it count when we use non-stock parts? And never designed to fly?

Because this little project grew out of a single objective. Build the biggest, most badass fully functional land vehicle the physics engine can support.

Sadly, it's weight is such that even with weapons stripped out, simply moving it across the runway tends to... well, see for yourself

I suppose I could try and build bigger, but I think it's big enough.

For the purpose comparison, here it is next to my mobile factory complex, a facility that has enough internal foundries, refineries, 3-d printers and external drills to supply not only its own needs (it can produce spacecraft from a deployable rear runway), but supply any facilities on a planets SOI.

I have just started designing some landers and craft for a Laythe colony.

The first two landers contain habitat, laboratory, reactor, control room and a rover.

GYOOaCD.jpg

The third lander contains a jetboat so far. A fourth lander with the station core and a spaceplane will also join soon.

LOLWUT....

Although i commend you for making it have a cannon barrel thats an actual weakspot as in will instantly blow up when shot at! Id still replace that with a 105 howitzer or something from BDArmory mod.....

Also, how stable (err or unstable) is it?

Once you learn to casually hover at 1/3 throttle, you're good to go.

I might make a cannon that actually works(single fire).

And btw, I want to keep the engines, since it was basically what I was aiming for. I like how they look.

CIRA VI

Designer: Zekes

Status: COMPLETED

Cost: $3,189,410.00

The largest Zokesian Lifter yet, the Cira-VI has a massive 40 engines in the first stage, and is capable of putting over 800 tonnes of pure cargo into LKO.

Simply stage to fly. I recommend making the launchpad indestructible, or it probably will blow it up on launch.

Here is an edited video of it's launch of 779 tonnes of test fuel to orbit - the 3rd stage still had over 1000 m/s of D/V in it.

May I present my most Rep-Worthy craft: The USS Armored Cruiser proof-of-concept.

It's an unfinished warship showcasing 2 360 degree rotating turrets. Did I mention this is totally stock?

screenshot200_zpsbac5237d.png

screenshot202_zps34684f7c.png

The turrets decouple from the hull. In the center of the turret, an I-beam sticks out the bottom through a hole in the hull. 4 landing struts mounted on this beam pointing up keep the turret from popping out(I don't know how you could manage to do that). 24 landing gear arranged in a ring at the base of the turret allow it to rotate. Reaction wheels apply the force needed to spin it around. The guns have 2 elevation settings, 1700m range and 2300m range, toggled with the "1" action group.

I'll post the craft file if anyone wants it; it's something like 2000 parts. It still needs engines, a superstructure, buoyancy, and a way to get it into the ocean with it and the space center in one piece.

  • 2 weeks later...

A completely new approach to Kethane drilling. Essentially a self contained intermodal drilling rig that can function as a surface resupply point. Can also be outfitted with a skycrane or additional tanks as needed.

HogIWeH.png

and yes, it can be flown up with minimal expense with an SSTO. Drone-97_Heavy made it enough fuel to transport to the Mun.
