  1. that's actually the least believable part of the show. real change takes time, you literally have to wait for the old guard to die off for new ideas to really take hold. thing about alt histories is that you always wonder what the divergent point was. it has to be close to the pilot episode because history has a way of accreting. to far away and what you see is completely different and thus unrecognizable. then if the divergent point is close enough then the changes are so subtle its hard to see and difference at all. doing a different decade every season was a brilliant choice though it does make character arcs harder to follow.
  2. i was waiting for the last episode and binged over 3 days. i think it was an interesting season. with so many scifi shows failing to meet the mark (especially shows with trek and wars in their names, barring gems like andor and picard s3) its nice to have something thats actually watchable and consistent. though really the timetable on fusion is grossly exaggerated. that's a long steep climb and it doesn't matter how active your space program is. we all want one of those little fusion startups to have an idea that's actually viable, but the more i look into those, the more i admire the brute force effort of iter. seems the little guys spend most of their time looking for funding while the big boys are busy installing ginormous coils. i actually think fusion as propulsion is closer since it doesn't need to be breakeven. doing fusion-electric like on the show seems like a roundabout method. you get a better engine just dumping charged particles out the tailpipe. you still need fission or a massive solar array or beamed power or whatever. also the notion that you might have fusion powered plasma propulsion capable of changing an astroid's orbit that quickly, why the hell aren't you in the belt doing the belter things.
  3. toilet maintenance should be taught in high school. its one of those life skills that can save you thousands of dollars in the long run.
  4. i wonder if elon would let me borrow a raptor for snow removal.
  5. so yea, alaska decided to stop being broke about a week ago and started snowing, ive been shoveling snow ever since. i shoveled the deck and the walkway last night, and again this afternoon. probibly again tomorrow. being in se alaska, i need to get it while its still powder, wet snow is heavy and turns to ice if you don't handle it immediately.
  6. as a fellow fastener hoarder i understand. also didn't know you guys were talking about this until now. now im thankful that alaska airlines never uses their newer planes on alaska routes. i was shocked to get the 737-700 on my last flight. even been on a 400 once. we also used to have this combi which had cargo up front passengers in back. but they retired it because they needed more cargo capacity and opted for a dedicated cargo plane.
  7. paste as plain text is your friend. you dont know what kind of formatting the text may contain, so its better to strip it out.
  8. thanks. thats a weird place to put a setting.
  9. wait, there's dark mode, you mean ive been searing my retina for nothing?
  10. this guy has one of the best logos on youtube.
  11. you drive 10 miles around here you will fall off the island and get wet.
  12. not really big on urbanization of all the things, i like seeing squirrels on the power lines, up to the point where they unwittingly become shunt resistors.
  13. most of the jobs ive had have been solo gigs. the one where my boss was in another state was especially nice, most of my interaction was through the mail. though there are a few horror stories i have from the pawn shop i worked at, but those usually get moderated out. lets just say it involved a toxic boss and a lot of illegal activity, where reporting it could have got a lot of good people fired.
  14. keep in mind i really only have front teeth left. 15 at last count. maintaining what i have is my whole dental budget, waiting for a perfect checkup and then maybe i can swing for a partial. so far the worst part from the procedure is the hangover from the novocain.
  15. if apollo was learning how to crawl, then the current program will be learning how to walk. it will be some time before we can run. starship has legs if they can get it to work as advertised.
  16. on the running out of teeth front, i just had my very first root canal. just barely dodged another extraction. that's probibly a good thing and doesn't belong in the negative things thread, but il get back to you after the novocain wears off.
  17. i used to keep a full cookie jar when my sister still lived nearby, mostly for my niece who routinely raided the jar. every time it got to the bottom id rummage around my pantry to see what i could make. chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and penult butter were my usual. more rarely snickerdoodles and sugar cookies. sometimes mom would find a crazy exotic cookie recipe (i refuse to ever attempt to make macrons again, that's 5 hours im never getting back and the results were inedible). of course when my sis got divorced and moved i just came to the conclusion that we just end up eating too many cookies and stopped doing it. one way to avoid eating junk food is to not fill your house with it. im running out of teeth.
  18. im going to stop celebrating holidays, they are killing me. it usually takes me 3 or 4 months to get that sorted out.
  19. i propose we split the space-x thread into two. one for routine launches, and another for blowing stuff up.
  20. i broke linux again. i noticed the 4k video playback was shoddy, made me question whether or not the os installed nvidia drivers. last distro i used had a convenient utility for this, but i couldn't find any indication that any driver was installed. so i was following instructions, on the debian wiki, for my distro, on how to install blob drivers. so i followed the instructions, and it said i had to reboot, so i did. and now i cant login. gg linux, you win this round.. i think the documentation was a little sparse in this case. i usually have the opposite problem with linux documentation in that a lot of man pages are extremely winded. the instructions for how to add non-free repos to apt was ambiguous, it just mentioned a file and a line of text. am i supposed to edit that line or paste it in? idk. after trying 3 different things and fixing a typo, then updating apt i was able to find the correct package and install it.. another thing linux documentation fails at is how to mittigate common problems. like when you have other drivers installed that you couldnt find previously, or when you have secure boot enabled, you cant just install things that arent signed, i though linux didnt do that shtick. im not sure which broke my install but im pretty sure both happened. im at the point where i can log in as root in recovery mode and have no idea how to undo what i did, other than installing windows 10. such a shame, it was doing so well up to this point.
  21. sadie, the younger and thinner of my two cats was meowing out the window, she usually does this when she sees birds. of course there is this one big seagull in his usual spot on the building next door. this particular bird likes that particular spot for some reason and has been showing up there for over a year now. some debate has ensued about whether or not its the same bird. but it is a large bird, and the seagulls don't usually come inland, they usually stop at the fisheries and never leave. but it is always a very large gull and always in the same exact spot and its always just one. anyway its like streaming service for cats.
  22. i did get my steam deck, but im gonna need better reading glasses.
