  1. Every Duna day, Ike occults the star that Duna orbits resulting in an eclipse. It's starts getting cumbersome using earth based naming conventions. According to the IAU definition there are only eight planets in the entire universe. You can add exo- in front of most things, but kerbals may disagree. Maybe the Kerbal Astronomical Union defines Pluto as one of nine exo-planets circling a far away star.
  2. Wow, what a great reception. Unfortunately, I just learned that I cannot friend from mobile device. I'll have to make a cafe visit. Thanks everyone again for the great welcome!
  3. The use of Nuclear Thermal Rockets has been a key part of many versions of the Mars reference design by NASA. I imagine that the KSP version burns both an oxidizer and a fuel before super heating the exhaust with a nuclear source.
  4. You know you are a newb when... you think an engineering and celestial mechanics background will make you good at KSP you use the antenna to transmit your goo data before you unlock solar panels or batteries You think the atmosphere ends because the navball changed to orbit
  5. True enough, I learned that I'll need more experience with aero braking in the thin atmosphere. I swear I flew half across the planet with my parachutes flapping behind me with little drop in speed when... Pop! Chutes opened and my first Kerbals to reach the surface of Duna were scattered about a kilometer across its desert surface.
  6. Shortly after planting a flag on Minmus and then the Mun, I sent two Kerbals to heaven on my first Duna attempt. The parachute deployed when traveling about 1000 m/s. I got around the difficulty "issue" by sending three Kerbals, two to land. This required more tech.
  7. Hello! I joined the forums because I really enjoy the polite, helpful, and friendly posts. About a month ago I was talking to my son about a feasibility study on the mining of asteroids. I showed him a spreadsheet I made that demonstrated how water could be recovered from near earth objects at a fraction of the cost of lifting it from orbit. He said, "Popa, you have to get KSP. It uses real rocket physics. You will really love it." He then helped me get a steam account and used one of the gift cards I have been buying him to download the game. I have been addicted since. I have been playing with an old celestial mechanics guide that had a chapter on orbital mechanics, and my spreadsheets. I'll be playing this game for years. This is the first game forum I've joined, but I wanted to say hello.
