  1. Interesting idea. An addon for Kerbinside could be created which includes realistic runways and airport buildings. Flying with passengers (maybe an addon that modifies career tourists?) could have its own handicaps - such as not being allowed to subject them to any forces past 1.5g.
  2. 64-bit KSP, like said before, has more RAM allotted to it, meaning that crashes don't occur as frequently as with 32-bit KSP. I guarantee that it will still crash, but not as often. You may or may not also experience a increase in performance. I recommend running 64-bit KSP and forcing OpenGL if you have many mods (like me).
  3. Many people know that at the end of the war, the Nazis had a secret plan to build a big supercannon that would then be used to bombard London from various locations in Luxembourg and Belgium. The cannon would utilize a long tube to which shorter tubes with explosives would be attached to accelerate an artillery shell to supersonic speeds. Basically, there were several smaller tubes attached to the main tube through which the projectile traveled at 45-degree angles, in which explosive changes were placed. The gases resulting from the detonations would be directed in the direction of the acceleration, and the explosives were timed accurately to ignite when the projectile, which was accelerating in the tube, would pass by them. I imagine that this is a good concept to recreate in Kerbal Space Program, with the explosives being replaced by rocket engines or SRB's in order to negate the timing problem. Such a cannon could not only be used for ballistic bombardment of various locations on Kerbin but also to launch small (or large) payloads into orbit and maybe even beyond. What do you think? Show your builds! I will of course also try to work with this interesting concept.
  4. We should actually invent new names, not just add K's to real world location names. No Kerverest, no Kadagascar. The only exception being Kafrica (although only temporary). I imagine that there are two or three small fishing towns on the islands and that they are otherwise completely barren.
  5. Centris? Or maybe Karatoa? I would recommend for a map of all countries on Kerbin to be created first so that we will know the various languages and the areas in which they are spoken.
  6. Actually it will be probably either some sort of hard-to-get-to orbit (e.g. Low Kerbol Orbit, etc...) that can only be reached by specially designed vessels, with a journey taking many months or even years (considering the astronomic dV values and the fact that many long burns would be needed) or the surface of Eve or a heavily guarded Mohole. BTW, for RP/Story purposes: the Moholes are areas of eternal shadow, meaning that it is VERY cold there. We could give the prisoners spacesuits with heating but without any protection against the heat just in case they escape...
  7. I agree with you. KSP is a game that teaches you to learn from your mistakes.
  8. I like the concept of using a service bay as a crew compartment (Siren mini sub). If the bay is larger, command seats could be placed there. Useful for rescue ships because it usually offers more space than a Hitchhinker.
  9. Are you just like me - too lazy to come up with a decent name for your craft? Are your VAB and SPH folders filled with files named monotonously like "KR-41a" and "XZ-411"? This is the right thread for you! Post pictures and descriptions of your crafts here and have them named by other forum members! I'll start with the KS-44/KS-98 piggyback spaceplane configuration The KS-44 is a light one-man (in the default configuration) spaceplane, based off the X-20 Dyna-Soar but scaled up, desiged for small and medium LKO missions such as minor sattelite deployment or space station service. However, the propulsion stage (which is jettisoned after de-orbit, leaving the spaceplane without any means of propulsion as it is not needed during the reentry and the glide to the landing point) packs a big delta-V, allowing for a Mun flyby. A modified version of the spaceplane could theoretically be used for a Munar landing. Usually, the KS-44 is launched in a piggyback configuration, on the KS-98. The KS-98 is an unmanned rocket-powered spaceplane carrier - basically a big fuel tank with wings and engines attached to it which is used to propel the spaceplane to hypersonic speeds before releasing it.
  10. I have a big problem. When I press "F1", a file is created in the "Screenshots" folder, but the picture is all black and sized to the respective resolution. It contains nothing. I have tried changing game resolution and nothing happened. I'm running KSP x64 1.1.3 and I force openGL to allow for higher RAM room (I have modded my game severely). Windows 7. My GameData folder: The "Screenshots" folder: Update: I restarted the game and screenshots work now (after changing resolution); however, I'm not yet putting this question off the forum because a.) it may be possible that the problem comes back and b.) because I and other players who are experiencing the same problem want to know a quick emergency solution. Update: The problem keeps reappearing! Please help me!
  11. While most KSP players build SSTO spaceplanes, I prefer launching spaceplanes using suborbital carrier vehicles (Classic piggyback TSTO), launching them from standard airplanes or launching them on top of a rocket. Who else prefers TSTO or approaches with even more stages over SSTO's? Post and discuss your designs here! My list of advantages of TSTO's: - More realistic (many spaceplane designs of the present and past are actually TSTO concepts) - Allow a spaceplane to not carry jet engines (unless they are needed for landing, but most realistic spaceplanes land in unpowered flight anyway) - Allow for lighter, simpler and smaller spaceplanes that carry only their payload instead of engines only used for takeoff - Carrier vehicle (e.g. the hypersonic bomber from which the spaceplane is launched) is reusable and can be used to do a variety of in-atmosphere tasks while the spaceplane is in orbit. - More modularity - if you have developed a good carrier vehicle, you can launch a big variety of rockets or spaceplanes from it - Is safer - usually, no SRB's or only short-burning ones are involved in the launch profile, guaranteeing a safe suborbital abort without explosions and crying kerbals and a maniacally laughing Jeb. - Carrier vehicle usually holds enough fuel to be used to transport the spaceplane for long distances in-atmosphere while SSTO's usually only have enough jet fuel to safely fly from the Eastern Kafrican Alps (known as "the Oops Too Short Trajectory Crash Mountains" to many) to the KSC and for a short jet-powered acceleration to supersonic speeds. I think that landing somewhere on the other side of Kerbin and knowing that an airplane will come which will transport the whole spaceplane to the KSC is better than crashing in the mountains west of KSC regularly after struggling to use the last bits of leftover fuel to keep up the trajectory. It should also be noted that "carrier vehicles" (e.g. large planes on which the spaceplane is mounted and which accelerate it to a hypersonic speed) can also be rocket-powered - I have successfully performed experiments with such designs in the past and am working on one now. Here are the KS-44 spaceplane (an upscaled Dyna-Soar designed for small and medium missions such as deploying minor sattelite or space station service) and the KS-98 rocket-propelled unmanned reusable hypersonic carrier vehicle on the runway.
  12. This is a good point. Maybe, those kerbals who do REALLY nasty things (murder, rocket theft, deliberate crashing of vehicles, etc...) are immediately executed because they pose a danger to Kerbal society and to the space program at which it seems to be so obsessively centered?
  13. How about naming the highest mountain on Kerbin "Mount Kerman", after an explorer with the surname "Kerman" who first conquered it? This would prove the fact that most Kerbal Explorers came from the Kerman family, even before the space age when Kerbin itself was the object of exploration. K2 could be called "Brungnai" in the Taheirean language, the language of Taheiraz, the country in which it will be located in my fictious stories and cinematics (anybody who participated in the old KSP RP will know why I named the mountain country so). After all, the new KGS will also invent countries which then will be fleshed out cooperatively to create a new canon which could be used in stories and cinematics. I think that Medwedia (which will be located in the northeastern part of the continent north of Kafrica in my stories), my personal fictional country, will also sport some of the highest peaks on Kerbin.
  14. Another idea would be dumping some capsules or kerbals into the moholes on moho. Could theoretically also be used for the storage of secret weapons. Basically, first, a large circular platform is slowly lowered into the mohole until it gets stuck and becomes stable. Several Hitchhinkers or other capsules with prisoners are lowered using landers which only have a very small amount of fuel, only enough for a smooth landing on the platform. Regularly, supplies are dropped this way. The only way to get out would be a small lander usually kept at the surface, which is only used if a prisoner REALLY needs to be taken out (for example if he needs medical help). Security cameras are put everywhere and the prisoners are made to do mandatory exercises or some other thing that is not fun all day. They will wear electric shock collars or pain-inducing implants to prevent dissent. Theoretically, a mohole is one of the safest places in the whole Kerbolar system. No or only few guards will be needed directly at the site either; however, a small base located in the immediate vicinity of the mohole operated by the police will be responsible for supplying the prisoners with food, water and oxygen.
  15. Does this mod have EVA first person functionality?
  16. You mean that processors that are used for unimportant tasks (e.g. minor inclination correction, landing leg damper control, light control) will be used to perform important tasks (e.g. throttling engines and orienting, life support systems, takeoff and return from Mun, etc...) if the processors that were originally supposed to perform them were destroyed or their program was faulty?
  17. I am currently working on an Orbital Bombardment System and to my disamusement I have noticed the fact that all missiles immediately burn up upon entering the atmosphere at 4500 m/s. The problem behind this is clearly the lack of 0.625m heatshields as well as conical heatshields designed for usage with ballistic warheads or other things that should be pointy yet survive reentry. Those things are neither included in the stock game nor in any mod I know. Can anybody recommend or create a mod or part pack which includes the afromentioned parts?
