  1. Wouldn't expect an announcement too soon. Musk is a clever chap when it comes to PR (and everything), and he'll know that releasing details of his Mars ambitions while his rockets are grounded would be a massive own goal as the media wouldn't take it seriously. I agree with others, he'll wait for a successful 1st stage landing before releasing details of BFR and MCT. I think falcon is pencilled in to return to flight next month so it hopefully won't be long to wait!
  2. I think if we're blowing that amount of delta v on something we'd be better off doing a flyby of Sedna, it's on closest approach of its huuuge orbit in the next few decades and it's a rare opportunity to study something from so far out, which maybe even captured from interstellar space. Or maybe Uranus or Neptune systems deserve Casini style orbiters as we know very little about them.
  3. As someone who's been playing the game for ages I've long ago landed on and returned from all the planets. I've been itching to explore somewhere new for ages! So, since 1.1 will bring 64bit to all platforms does that mean squad will finally have the spare memory to give us more planets and moons without breaking the game? I'd love to visit a ringed gas giant, and an ice giant or two. And now we know how exciting Pluto is maybe Eeloo can be moved to Jool where it seems to belong and we can get some new outer worlds? I know we can do these things with mods but it just doesn't feel the same somehow as visiting proper official stock planets. Anyone else excited about new places to go?
  4. You know, I think I remember hearing it wasn't possible due to the lack of memory in 32bit... If that's changing now maybe we'll get it!
  5. Could you actually argue that Pluto and Charon are contact binary since there's evidence of them sharing atmosphere?http://www.space.com/30089-pluto-moon-charon-red-pole.html
  6. Oooo, that looks interesting, might have to add to my reading list!
  7. We know there are such things as contact binary stars, where pairs of stars orbit so closely together around their centre of mass that they're actually warped out of shape, touching, sharing stuff. We also expect there is such a thing as a binary planet, where two bodies of similar mass orbit a point outside the body of both objects, an example (if only they were classified as planets...) is Pluto and Charon. This got me thinking, would it be possible for there to be a contact binary planets? If they were gas giants they would share an atmosphere, and probably have crazy weather and electro magnetic interaction. Or two water worlds could share an ocean. Or two rocky planets that are warped out of shape and touching, maybe with crazy volcanic activity. Would it be possible or is my imagination getting carried away? What effects would it have on different types of planets?
  8. I wonder if it's possible to make one small enough to fit on a cubesat? Someone could stick one in space and see if it really works quite cheaply!
  9. Well I'm really enjoying Elite at the moment. Have had a go at every career, done tons of exploring and am now back in the bubble do community goals, trading and bounty hunting. Sure sometimes it's a bit samey and grindy, but I have a spaceship which can explore the whole freaking galaxy! Anyway, I thought the idea of landing on the planets and driving the Scarab looks so much fun I decided to try it for myself: Here's the whole mission:
  10. I guess if they were making one now they could stick a few cubesats each with high res cameras and release a swarm into the system. Not sure that sort of tech existed back then though.
  11. That's interesting, you see a small flash at 2.24, but then nothing unusual until it explodes properly a few seconds later. Maybe reinforces the idea that it's cold LOX forming the initial cloud which you can't see in infrared, and it doesn't actually explode until the amazingly robust first stage goes pop. It's quite impressive how long the first stage keeps going straight considering what's happened to the second stage and dragon getting thrown free.
  12. I know it can and has been done with just plants. Not sure it's possible to achieve with livestock too. The Walstad Method for planted aquariums is pretty close though, requires minimal maintenance. http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Walstad_method
  13. I've been everywhere and returned from everywhere except I think Eeloo (think there's still a Kerbal sat there waiting for a rescue in an old versions save file). So far in 1.0 I've done Minmus, Mun, Duna, Ike, Gilly and Pol.
  14. Just build an aerodynamic symmetrical rocket, stick control surface fins on the tail and do a proper gravity turn. It's really not that hard. And as a bonus you need less DV to reach orbit. The fact that you can actually fail if you don't pay attention to a launch makes it more fun!
  15. It went something like this... Yes, yes, yes, I've made it! ... Errrr why is it tipping?... **** lift off!!! Which why is up!? No, no, not down... (Boom) Ooooh! I survived! Oh, I'm coming back down, (Boom) wow how did I survive that? (Bounce) **** (Bounce) **** (Bounce) **** (skid) I'm gonna make it! (Stop) YES YES YES! IN YOUR FACE GRAVITY! Wooooo!
  16. Station and colony parts please, though maybe they could be part of a future colonisation paid expansion? also new parts for big interplanetary motherships - more nuclear engines, non-aircraft liquid fuel tanks, spinning toridal crew modules etc...
  17. Thought I'd illustrate how I use mine - as a rover lander and garage. It's a 2.5m bay, with a reaction wheel above with landing legs attached, a couple of drogue 'chutes and a couple of normal 'chutes, plus some mono propellant and a couple of little mono propellant engines, just enough TWR and DV to be able to de-orbit from Duna and have a little last second burn to soften the landing. Then retract the legs and drive on out!
  18. With the LV-N now using liquid fuel only do we now need some more liquid fuel tanks? It looks odd making an interplanetary ship using aircraft parts, and it's a waste of space/mass using normal tanks without the oxygen. What would be really cool would be if we had a few tanks similar to the orange hydrogen tanks from Near Future Propulsion, the spherical ones in particular are awesome looking for interplanetary craft. While we're at it it would be good to have a 2.5m version of the LV-N too so we can have engines inline rather than attached to the side. LV-N really is the only engine worth using to go to Moho/Jool/Eeloo, so it would be good to have some more variety in the ships we can build for these trips. It'll be an even bigger deal when squad get round to that second gas giant...
  19. Yep, that's happened to me. I had the bright idea of putting a MK1 lander can inside a 2.5m which I flew all the way to Pol. The whole journey the lines in the map were wobbling and the markers on the navball were jumping, thought it was a bug until I opened the bay to do an EVA and saw it bouncing around inside. It was a total nightmare trying to dock the lander back onto the main ship for journey home as I couldn't work out if I was travelling towards my target, and in the end had to eyeball it.
  20. You can fit a little unkerbaled rover in a 2.5m one, put the bay at the bottom of the lander and when you raise the landing legs it's flat to the ground and you can just drive out.
  21. Yep, my third sub orbital launch reentered capsule nose first and poof! She was gone. Was actually really gutted as I had all these big ideas of sending Val and Jeb on a grand tour, they were going to conquer Eve together, and fist pump during the Tylo suicide burn... but nope, not happening.
  22. Hmmm, I think you're being a bit cynical here, maybe I'm just a fanboy falling for his good PR, but I actually believe Musk when he says the primary goal of Space X is to colonise mars. Every time you hear the man speak about the founding of SpaceX and his companies primary goal, mars is all he ever talks about. Also, they're already actively researching the massive rocket to do it (I believe engine testing should begin soon, and he said he'd unveil the design for the Mars Colonial Transport this year). I think Musk is just disappointed at mankind's progress since the end of the 60's, and is trying to use his companies to achieve the vision of the future he dreams of.
