1. The large radiator panels seemed to work very well for me in my uglycopter. I haven't got the tail rotor working, but the main rotor is fine and doesn't suffer any cooling, er heating issues. The small radiator panels explode and overheat in no time from even the junos. Hopefully I'll have time tonight to tinker.
2. Shamelessly ripped this banner from pTrevTrevs So for this week's theme, amid the chaos of the forum switchover, sadly I didn't have as much time as I had hoped. So today's theme, Land, Sea, Air & Space. One a pop. There were some good contenders that weren't featured. Again, my criteria were very arbitrary. However these four made me smile and mostly enjoy watching my CPU try and melt itself. My other criteria, I wanted to feature less well-known builders. So my preferences ignored well-known builders. And I was being lazy... So there's the criteria. Now onto the craft. Land andrew123's T-72A: It's a tank. And it's a beautiful piece of work. It looks like a tank, it drives like a tank that those endos, and it spins its turret. I just wanted it to shoot stuff so I can go bombard the eejits that inhabit the VAB building... T-72A Thread link Air Bubbadevlin's F86 Sabre. This is a nice little replica, I had two teeny gripes (nose shape slightly off, and this version has a tailwheel rather than a nosewheel - eh potato potaato), but had so much fun hootling around the KSC that I forgot about them. Sabre thread link Sea EladDv's Pompeii. The missiles this thing carries are just too cute. I love them. Sadly, my FPS was limiting so while I tested it, I can only vouch for how much fun I had mashing the space bar and watching the missiles fly away like cute little missiles. Pompeii thread link Space Bill Zarr's Enterprise: I don't really know what to say about this one. It's the Enterprise, yet in a manageable size. Yes I enjoyed a slideshow, so I didn't try it with the shuttle. But the launch system it came with me was surprisingly easy. Even for a moron like me that hasn't actually been to space in a long time. Heck, I can't even remember how to build a rocket these days... USS Enterprise thread link
3. Got a craft file for this thing? Or am I blind? Gotta love that all the formatting got lost...
4. Tail rotor coming... soonâ„¢... Big radiator panels work quite well. The small ones overheat in no time at all, even when just pointing a handful of Junos at it. Tried a couple of variations for the tail, but I need to redo that bearing because it jams too easily... Slapped some Junos on just to see if it works, and what sort of blade angle it needs. Want to use the floating blades trick to get a tail rotor that is linked to throttle. I did try to do it with a gear and cog system, but the small hardpoints didn't quite work. Need to revisit that. She's currently called the Flopper and is fugly. So fugly. But I wholeheartedly retract my skepticism about the structural fuselages for bearings...!
5.
This is actually a really good bearing and I'm trying something very similar. Thanks for the inspiration Jakalth! Also I wonder if the Mk0 tank inside the now hollow structural fuselage might be something to look at.
I think it's a bit tight no? I briefly messed around with some wheels in there, but the small landing gear are a smidge too big. But... if you had the wheels on the structural fuse poking in and supporting that Mk0, that could work. See if I can find some time at the weekend to play with these.
6.
I really like the looks of this one and I never tried a hydrofoil before so I had to. I love the little detail, the arched back and the big rear which almost looks like a modern sports car. Well deserved, if a little fragile (took me 4 times to get it into the water in one piece).
Thanks for the feature, yeah she don't like highspeeds and entering... Guess I should have mentioned that. I put it in the water at no more than 4 or 5m/s... I'll add that to the notes, so thank you.
7. Well you can try by using struts. If it's falling apart on the runway, use struts. You don't need masses of them, but I always build first, and then strut the obvious (to me parts), and then load it onto the runway and see where it sags, and what sags. Then you strut that together and job done. If you had a picture, or an example craft I could take a peak and help if you like.
8. Mk3 cargo bays make buoyancy weird...
9. I can take my slot next week. But if it's pushed to the 4th I have to bail and postpone. Sorry this weekend been tied up with schoolwork and having to prep the Suzuki for its winter nap.
10.
You got this released yet?
Yes! Thread and download via KerbalX
MiG-29 is approaching! http://i.imgur.com/IatMUkT.png http://i.imgur.com/oq1Fnlz.png
Not to wade in... But I am... sorry. If you take some of the medium landing gear you can really recreate the blend between fuselage and wing. Makes me think I should update mine and re-engine it with some Panthers...
11. So I have been tying to build a Mach 1 capable hydrofoil... But things just start breaking once you get above 150m/s. However I do have the Pride of Veere, a 144 passenger hydrofoil that is capable of 150+. For this entry, I'll claim 152m/s. Yes, I lost some canards, because I had to turn at highspeed and they distinegrated. So your call whether you accept it or not, I have on other occasions gone faster and not broken them. So it's a bit of pot luck as to whether they stay attached at times... Craft file is on KerbalX. The craft at the end, well that's the fastest I've managed before disintegration or take off.... [imgur]BmI95[/imgur]
12. The name was off-putting... But I love that ballast solution. How did you figure that out? I just [s]tried ripping it off[/s] learning from yours. Does it work with the bigger mark three cargo bays? So simple! Just open the doors and it sinks... Close them and it surfaces. +rep
13. Yep... I just threw the crew cabins together and thought that was enough. Pure coincidence, because I don't even get the reference...
14.
Messing around with hydrofoil. It's able to reach speed up to 175-180 m/s, but then its wings crash http://i.imgur.com/xQFZUS9.png http://i.imgur.com/nhq7KDT.png http://i.imgur.com/RJUkDhq.png
Clearly I need to [s]steal[/s] be inspired by you foil design. Because I can't get close to those speeds without serious engine thrust. But I've found that usually around 150 it gets all wobbly anyways.
15. I think I love boating. Space? Where's the fun in that? As I push towards a Mach 1 capable hydrofoil I ended up with this little fatty... With a starting fuel load as in the craft file you can expect a seamless transition from boat to hydrofoil without any control inputs, a 66% power cruise speed of c. 73m/s and a top speed around the 120m/s mark. You can play with single notches of trim to see how you can affect the speed, typically I don't trim more than one notch nose up. If you take out or burn a bunch of fuel you will surpass 150m/s, you will probably want to experiment with nose down trim, but I've not yet seen it take off so we're still good. If you fill the main tanks (ie those that aren't disabled) you can see a 66% cruise speed of around 62m/s and an endurance of c. 35minutes. Passenger cabins for 144 Kerbals, plus 2 crew, each cabin's upper hatches are accessible. 1 toggles reverse thrust, and this thing stops on a dime. You can also use the air brakes that are built into the tail fins' controls, for finer braking. For low speed turning you'll need to manually toggle the thrust reverser for the outboard engines. 9 toggles the cockpit ladder 0 toggles the front ladder, if a Kerbal takes a swim. NB: When putting her in the water, take it slow. Really slowly... Like 5m/s max. It's a boat, not a sports car. 16.
FlipNascar, so hydrofoils work now? That's cool! I've done some in 0.20, but theywere really slow (<45 m/s)
http://s2.ipicture.ru/uploads/20130607/q3IRGBo8.png

Yes they work properly. On the two I've built so far, they both get up onto the step around 30m/s and do it without any control inputs. Then just add more engines until it goes faster. I'm sure if I start playing with plane angles that it could be tweaked further. Maybe at the weekend I'll play around with that and see what can be found. Holler if you want the craft file for the fatty...
17. Bigger is always better right? Originally only had three engines, but she couldn't break 30m/s. So wouldn't get up in the step.. So with a bit of Goliath overkill it now does 152... And doesn't roll. Although turning at those speeds may tear off control surfaces... Time to build a Mach 1 hydrofoil! I don't think I'm ever going to space again a this rate...
18. This is a happy little thing that gets up on to the step without any inputs. Fire up the engines, drive to the water with the cheap-o frame. Stage. And go. In dry mode the thing will cruise at 70m/s at full power. With reheat enabled speeds of more than 100m/s are possible. However, speeds over 110 may lead to flipping. The best way to use this is to to play with the pitch the trim, you need to trim it out a bit, and then when she's settled she'll eat up the kilometres as you tear along the surface of your favourite ocean. Included is a cargo bay. Because now it has some semblance of usefulness... Put stuff in there, or swap it for a crew cabin. 1 Toggles the reheat! You can disable the cockpit's reaction wheels and she still works. Although at low speed you'll need to turn it on for docking. 19. Hydrofoils are fun! Gets up on the step around 30m/s, tops out around 72m/s "dry". Reheat takes it up to around 102m/s. Doesn't need any input or cajooling, she just gets up and runs. Rolls quite easily, but not really a surprise given the shape.
20. So I've got the Sea Hippo which has a submarine in it. The sub is a POS with regard to handling though. And then there's the Queen of the Sea. I got carried away with creating a custom nose and cockpit. The proportions seem a bit wrong, I think I need to raise the wings and it will then look a bit better. However, the Queen of the Sea flies beautifully and can poodle along at about 30m/s. I'll post craft files if/when I'm happy with them.
21. I know I'm late to the party because I haven't had the time... But those structural fuselages make great missile tubes! And it conveniently cleans up the mess of the octo strut + decoupler through heating effects. Although have to see how long a tube you need to avoid damaging the main craft. Now we need to do another cannon challenge...
22. Not a stellar entry, she's a pig to handle. Too buoyant at that rear. But, it works. And it fits in a cargo bay. So we have the DSV IA brought to water by the frankly ugly Sea Hippo. I travelled about 12km before I got bored... Went down to 847m, but got stopped by the ocean floor and got up to a rounded down 13m/s. 872*1.5 = 1,308.
23. I can't believe I put something together that looks so damn ugly. Having said that, the remodelled radial intakes do offer the chances for some custom shapes
24. Eh.. I broke mine already. It doesn't fly. One engine gets "occluded"... As soon as you throttle up. Don't have the patience today... Probably intake related or something. A problem for tomorrow. I just started randomly adding parts and this is what I ended up with... No idea what it's supposed to be or do.
