  1. BTW I've expanded my use of the map (or "Koogle Kerbin" as I like to call it) and have been using it extensively in my Elcano attempt (see sig). It's been working pretty well, I highly recommend it for long distance ground based projects.

  7. Again, the point is not efficiency. I know there are waaay better ways to travel through space. This was just a funny idea I came up with, and it's basically a joke.
  8. I like the idea, but It'd be cool if there was narration of other actions too, such as booster separation, etc. It would just have to be short clips of sound like in Chatterer. Maybe an option to set the sound to play when stage reaches a certain fuel level, or reaching a maneuver node for a burn. An option to record your own narration would be cool too, and to set what files to play and when.

  11. I cut Gilly in half using a modified Death Star orbiting Eve on low-beam mode, resulting in a very large hill shape. I drag it with a warp field over to Duna and land it right on top of @KAL 9000's hill. My relocated hill.

  13. DAY 1 After a brief rest and systems check on Farewell Hill, the crew set out into the great unknown to the south. Well, it wasn't that unknown...All the rockets ever launched had a view of it. It just wasn't very well explored, just like the rest of the planet. Only they kind of knew what to expect for that area because at least they knew what it looked like. It was mostly gently (occasionally not so gently) hills, and they were basically able to go straight southwest. That would give the most direct pathway around the Kerbal Mountains so they could then make their way westward toward Desert's Arm Channel. As the sun set below the horizon, the team had covered almost 80 kilometers from KSC. They wondered how they would measure their progress when they got around to turning around Kerbal Mountains and going north again. Soon it was too dark for the solar panels to generate any energy, so Jogy decided it was time to find a flat spot and settle down for the night. She and Kerzy had been driving for over an hour and a half, after all! Jogy noticed then that a wheel had broken. "It's not bad, I can fix it," said Kerzy. And indeed, it was an easy fix. By now they had covered over 81 kilometers! Unfortunately, Jogy and Kerzy noticed a design flaw that evening. The ladder to the crew cabin was too high up! It wasn't terribly hard to climb up the wheel to get to it, but still more work than anticpated. "Tedrick, could you fire up the map computer and see what our path looks like?" asked Jogy. "Sure, let me just plug in our coordinates," replied Tedrick. He loaded the coordinates into Koogle Kerbin and showed the results. The path was 87 kilometers long in total! "Wow, you can really go a long ways with this thing!" said Dereny. "And that was only half a day's driving!" The team ate dinner, happy with the thought that they had traversed so much terrain. As they went to rest for the night, each felt quite satisfied with the day's progress. END OF DAY 1 Edit: I will be posting maps such as the one above, as I have loaded a Kerbin map onto Google Earth. What I've been doing is a few times a day, I go into the .sfs file I'm currently in (in the future I will use info from map view too) to find the exact coordinates of the rover. I put these in as placemarks in Google Earth and name them according to when they were taken. For instance, the one called "Rover Location 12/27 Morning" means that I took the coordinates after I was finished driving this morning. But then I came back later in the afternoon and drove some more. "End of Day 1" is where I stopped for the night after sunset on Kerbin. I try to make things clear enough, and maybe I'll provide a download link to the map with my path when I'm done so you can see exactly where I went. I also am naming the major formations I encounter on my way. I'll provide a map soon with the features labeled. For instance, the Kerbal Mountains are the mountains just west of KSC, and Desert's Arm Channel is the bottleneck in the ocean that will be the crew's first ocean crossing. Edit 2: Provided the labeled version of the Day 1 map.

  17. Because it would be funny to have mirrors as exhaust. I imagine a person shoving in new mirrors into the light chamber the way people would shove coal into a train engine way back in the day. Of course it would be really slow, and the person's job would be really boring, just move a mirror every so often, probably at least every several hours if not days or weeks. You'd be better off having all the people you don't need anymore jump as hard as they can off the back of the spacecraft That is, if you prefer moving your spaceship over having more people.
  18. The mirror's mass does matter, as they're basically the same as fuel in a chemical rocket. The light is a simple lightbulb using solar/nuclear energy. As more mirrors get ejected, the craft gets lighter, and goes faster. The light is provided inside the craft so it would be able to propel itself wherever you need but it produces extremely low thrust, creates Kessler syndrome with it's exhaust, and requires an immense number of mirrors to get anywhere, which reduces the thrust even more. I wouldn't count on the mirror drive being the next revolution in space travel, but it's a funny idea.
  19. I was actually, no joke, totally caught by surprise when the host introduced Wernher von Braun instead of Werhner von Kerman... It was a cool video though, the real props are so much more fun to watch than CGI.
  20. I personally don't use MechJeb, because I like flying. If you like watching your ships fly themselves, go for it. If you're doing a challenge and the rules say "no mechjeb," then it's cheating. But in any other case, no, nothing is cheating unless you feel like it's cheating. I personally never use alt-F12 on legitimate missions, but sometimes I derp around with it just for fun. Use whatever mods you like, I don't care.
  21. Yeah, for whatever planet the exhaust mirrors crash into, I guess! It also moves the spaceship slightly.
  22. So, photons exert a tiny force when they reflect off of something. I was thinking about the EMDrive yesterday, and how it supposedly uses radiation pressure for thrust. Then I had this ridiculously funny and impractical idea of how the EMDrive is supposed to work, according to the physics we know. It would best be explained by a picture: It would use mirrors as fuel, and would leave a stream of mirrors in it's wake as it slowly gets pushed along. It's completely impractical, but would work. I thought it was a funny idea...
