  1. I'm talking about the mod, procedural fairings. I found a MM patch in one of the threads where someone was making the procedural fairings work with TU. It works in the editor but when launched it reverts to a default. The default is kind of a matte off white, and it's still way better than the ugly textures of procedural fairings. I'm not asking you to do any work, was just wondering if @Jimbodiah had a patch hidden somewhere since he has so many other SSTU related patches. Oh, another question; I have EL installed, and the SSTU inflatable station modules require rocket parts to inflate; the SSTU configurable containers allow storage for other EL resources like metal ore and scrap metal, but no storage for rocket parts. Is this an oversight or intended?
  2. Random question do you use procedural fairings with textures unlimited? I found a patch somewhere but the fairing seems to reset once I hit the launch button to leave the VAB. I suppose this isn't the right thread for this discussion but I do think it's of interest to general users of SSTU who use procedural fairings. I didn't even think to replace their textures for a long time, even though I was complaining to myself how ugly they were.
  3. I've never been one to focus on aesthetics in KSP. But with the low-part-count solutions in SSTU, I find that I have time to focus on playing with all of the textures (using @Jimbodiah's color presets). I wrote a simulated annealing algorithm that tells me the cheapest launcher combination of engines and SRBs (with at least 1.25 initial TWR and a quite liberal amount of delta-v), and tells me the cheapest upper stage engine/fuel combination to reach a given delta-v with TWR > 0.5. I basically did this because there are so many dang engines Anyway, basically I build a payload, which takes a few minutes, design the upper stage and launcher, which also takes a few minutes, and then I end up playing with the aesthetics of the vehicle for longer than it took me to build it. I've almost never cared at all what my KSP contraptions look like until this SSTU save. I tried SSTU largely because I wanted low part counts to manage FPS and stuttering, but I think my favorite part of SSTU is that the all-in-one nature of so many of the parts means I spend less time remembering every little thing I need to add to make something functional, and spend more time making them look nice and flying interesting missions.
  4. Just to mention, after reading through most of the thread; for me, contract configurator is basically an unusable mod. The difference in GC times with/without CC is literally a factor of 10, with a single contract pack installed. And in certain situations, even with considerable padding for 16gb of ram, something in CC causes GC spam, in like 3-5s intervals. Mostly I noticed this in suborbital flight over the Mun (no graphics packs installed). Anyway, I would say, anyone who feels like they just can't fix their stuttering issues, or memGraph isn't working as well as you expect; try playing for a little bit without contract configurator. I don't think I can ever use it again.
  5. I confirm that holding alt while clicking the 'drive' button fixes the rover autopilot issue of not setting and following headings. This has been bugging me for like 6 months, and I even made a github issue about it
  6. I got tired of single biome apollo style missions to Minmus and Mun, in my 30% science career save (still waiting on a few tech nodes before I start building stations for lab use). So I sent up a big tank of hypergolic to refuel the lander. Should be able to easily make 10+ trips up and down before needing to head back to Kerbin.
  7. I forget which thread I saw it in, but I definitely saw Squad staff confirm that the expansion requires 1.4. So it's safe to assume it will come out before/with the expansion.
  8. It may be that CKAN will automatically create them if they don't exist; sorry, I didn't test that. One thought I had is, if you get the chance, a "clone GameData" function might be useful. This would clone the CKAN files and GameData directory, that way you can set up a "template" GameData, with the very base mods that you always play with no matter what. Already a great tool, but that would be a useful feature for me.
  9. @IcecoveryIt looks like the CKAN problem is that the json and xml files that show up in the CKAN directory are empty when you create a new GameData
  10. I sorted out the permissions issue by simply copying the whole KSP folder to a totally new path. Now, switching GameData's breaks CKAN. I get the following error message: The original GameData folder works with CKAN, but any other GameData created by this tool seems to break CKAN for me
  11. When I try to set a GameData as default, I get an "access denied" error on the GameData folder. The tool doesn't seem to be able to rename GameData. It can rename other folders TO GameData, it just can't rename GameData. Running as administrator doesn't help. Using Windows 10. Not really sure how to sort it out, I've had lots of trouble with my KSP installs and folder locking, which I think started with BitDefender locking CKAN on me.
  12. thanks for all the stories, exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping people were eager to share!
  13. I'm sure people will design "campaigns" of some sort but it's sort of a bummer to me that each mission is self-contained. Still, will buy the expansion right away and am anxious to see what kinds of things people will come up.
  14. One thing I'm not clear about, and sorry if I missed it, but how does the the mission builder integrate with career mode (or is it completely separate)?
  15. I've donated $15 to different mod authors at different times; that is a really good price to pay to Squad as well for the ~2000+ hours of KSP I've played.
  16. I remember mine, because I think it's a pretty funny story. I've always been a pretty heavy gamer, but at the time I was playing alot of MMOs, WoW probably. We had an observing night on the Keck telescope, MOSFIRE I think, and the weather was bad. High humidity, precipitation at the summit; the telescope operator was never even able to move the telescope and open the dome. Myself and one of the grad students in our group were in the remote observing facility, and were playing around with some browser games or something. He asked if I'd ever played KSP. I didn't know what he was talking about (at the time, I wasn't really using Steam much to discover games like I do now). He had played around but never really seriously played, so we booted it up, mod-free. It took us 2-3 hours to get something to space. I had taken an orbital mechanics class in undergrad but surprisingly I don't think we had ever calculated transfer orbits, or burn directions, etc. Just deriving equations and calculating orbital properties; it wasn't orbital dynamics after all After getting a Kerbal to space, we decided to EVA. We immediately lost control of the Kerbal and sent him hurtling irretrievably into space. This game was making me re-think controls in gaming in a way that I had never experienced, in 25 years of gaming. Eventually before the sun came up (in Hawaii), we had sent a Kerbal to a fly-by of the Mun. Normally after an observing night I come home and crash, but I was pumped up to buy KSP. I bought it and started digging into mods (I was a heavy WoW mod-user, so I loved that KSP had an active mod community, it was a big selling point for me). That first day I had mechjeb and Kerbal Engineer and a few parts mods with engines; I was on my way. I did my first rendezvous and botched the docking, of course. In the end I was up ~32 hours straight, the last ~20 of them playing KSP. I think I slept 14 hours that night. Did other people have the same "this is a revolution" experience when learning about KSP for the first time?
  17. Musk said in the press conference "you know it's real because it looks so fake". Said if it was CGI, they'd do a better job making it look real.
  18. Musk said 16 stories today, IIRC, in the press conference. I don't know what he was referring to. Perhaps with the landing legs
  19. In the press conference today someone asked Elon about the Tesla. He said it's just a Tesla. Just a normal car, factory seats, normal paint job, nothing special.
  20. ~2 hours ago Elon said ~5 hours so I'm guessing ~3 hours from now
  21. In all seriousness though, I got major goosebumps when the side boosters landed within a split second of each other. It's a bummer they seem to have likely lost the core, but my expectations going into it were "I hope they don't blow up the launchpad"
  22. I'm sure Jeb snuck in there at the last second when everybody thought it would be an uncrewed mission, and now they'll have to launch another Falcon Heavy for a rescue mission
  23. If you have problems with ISP and trust, you should switch away from Comcast.
  24. I've been getting myself confused about "core samples" and "biome research", and I have a request to rename the button on the gui menu for the CrewCab Biome Research experiment. If I understand things correctly, the Buffalo Crew Cab "Take Core Sample" experiment does an experiment that KSP sees as "biome research", which acts like the surface scanner and unlocks biome-specific resource abundances. Then, the Gold Digger mini-drill has an experiment called "Take Core Sample" which actually refers to the "Core Sample" experiment, and which modifies the drilling efficiency. I don't know if it's a legacy GUI button naming issue, but perhaps the CrewCab button should be called "Perform Biome Research" to help avoid confusion. Unless I've got it all wrong! Everything is installed correctly, directly from the github releases. At some point the drill started working in my career save. Unfortunately I didn't notice which tech node or building upgrade may have unlocked it.
  25. built a prototype pathfinder base within view of KSC. It's mainly set up to handle life support and it barely has enough power, but I haven't filled out the tree yet and I could probably make a base on the Mun or Minmus as is. Will probably still wait for some more tech for power.
