1. Looks like they haven't set a new launch date yet - postponed due to weather, so I would imagine it could be tomorrow, or whenever the weather improves
2. Too bad it was scrubbed, thanks for posting the livestream Kryten, I looked everywhere for it - should have known I'd find it here!
3. Too many missions were simply devoured whole by the Kraken, never to be seen again.
4. I typically perform my landings manually, but have Smart ASS at the ready in Surface Level mode. As soon as I touch down I can enable it if needed and it will attempt to hold the ship vertical, then I can lock suspension on the downhill side and set it down gently, or take off and find a better spot.. Mostly it buys you some time to analyze things and saves from accidentaly tipping in the wrong direction. Still only limited to your ship's ability to hold itself upright though, so if the slope is too steep or your ship lacks adequate control not even MechJeb can save you.
5. I've only learned 2 tricks that work for me; MechJeb Smart A.S.S or F9.
6. Almost landed on the Mun in a vehicle launched by air-breathing Rapiers with only 10 kN rocket thrust (in response to this challenge). Ran out of fuel just 30 m/s short in my suicide burn but Mike Kerman EVA'd just in time to avoid the resultant explosion. Problem is I now felt obligated to send a rescue mission. Playing in my fully stock 1.0.5 sandbox game I launched an unmanned Munar X to get him, landed within 200m (that was the easy part, not tipping over took a couple reloads). Then I discovered the Munar X doesn't have the delta V to get him home, so left him in an eccentric orbit and sent another rescue mission out. Realized this was the first rendezvous I'd done in a while without MechJeb, but all went smoothly and we got him safely home, which is good because Jeb and co are still mysteriously MIA.
7. Not sure what it takes, but our lawyers were able to argue for successful contract completion based on having just 2 wheels on Minimus after 2 of the landing legs locked up. This thing isn't going anywhere, but it is technically on wheels so, contract fulfilled.
8. Not trying to start a flamewar, I'm a newbie and was learning a lot from his detailed posts - maybe that's not what you had in mind for this challenge but it seemed like quite a complex mission to me, yet also something I could emulate. Some guys on this forum and elsewhere in the KSP universe are geniuses and us mere mortals simply bow our heads in reverence while saying, there's no way I could ever do that (see Jool 5 Challenge, for example). Seems to me if you want to show love for Dres you would welcome any reasonably complex mission; otherwise set up a scoring mechanism to reflect what you really want to see. Anyway, it's your challenge, run it how you want, not trying to flame, but I did learn a lot from his posts and (to me at least) it was an inspiring mission. Hope to see more.
9. I was really enjoying Foxsters Dres mission, but apparently it wasn't considered good enough? Now I'm boycotting Dres.
10. Not doubting your score of 86 Awesomeness points, they both look pretty awesome to me, but can we see how you scored them, i.e., what was the fuel consumption, mission timing, passenger load?
11. Yeah, this was supposed to be in response to someone else's comment, not it's own thread. It's not really a concern for me, our computers at work suck and that's the way it is, just thought it might be the same problem for another user who was having issues.
12. Hmm, did someone delete my post in this thread or did it just not go through - i'm pretty sure it posted. As I noted, I have a horrible experience trying to use these forums at work, but I assume that is just due to the limitations of my work computer and their handicapped setup. Works fine for me at home on Chrome, but using IE at work it is nearly impossible to type any replies, I usually write them in notepad then paste them into the forum. Even at that I have to right-click because Ctrl+V doesn't work. Edit - I see now that it got moved to it's own post. Thanks, mods, I guess, but I was just trying to answer Laughing Gravy's concerns, wasn't really trying to start my own thread about the issue. Also - My nickname is Gravy, so enjoying your username.
13. I have a horrible experience trying to use this forum while at work (on my lunch break, of course) but I assume that's just because I'm on a crappy work computer running a handicapped version of IE. Have no problems at home browsing on Chrome. Here at work it's so bad I actually type my replies in notepad, then paste them over, right clicking no less, because Ctrl+V doesn't work.
14. Lots of great entries in this thread. My favorites (in order of appearance):
And then the rocket exploded. Again. - MOARdV I didn't go to space today - Commisioner Tadpole When in doubt, use more struts! TheBadAstronomer Perfect landing! Now awaiting rescue ship... - 5thHorseman So far, so good! Wait... nope. - magico13 Why is that planet getting bigger? -Kyrian Looked at map. Ran into mountain. - Alchemist Got to Moho. Please, send fuel. - Alchemist Is that my engine floating away? - Umlux The delta vee lied to me - silent_protagonist That engine was supposed to explode. - plainawesome Jeb designed a rocket. KSC burned. - MaverickSawyer More speed no no less speed! - trekkie That isn't supposed to decouple yet. - metalmouth7 Got on a ladder. Things exploded - Pds314 That worked better in my head - Comma_dose Hey, it's the ground...coming FAST- mythbusters844 I didn't want that stage anyway. Red Iron Crown For sale: Mission flag, never used. - Kuzzter Got stuck in VAB designing crafts. - Robotengineer T Z Spacebar BOOM! RapidUnplannedDissasembly (Only 4 words, but what more is there to say, really?) "...nothing concerning about this vessel..." Riiight. - 0111narwhalz Got to Laythe, hatch was blocked.-astropapi1 Well, this could have gone better... - kreutkevic Need more struts, need more boosters. - TaintedLion We came, we saw, we scienced. - Mad Rocket Scientist It was good until it flipped. - Legendary Emu
And my own contributions - We launched, we flipped, we orbited. Oh, they're orbiting THAT way. Huh. Sure, we've got fuel for that.
15. I started a new career in 1.0.5 just to check things out (without messing up my 1.0.4 work) - The new heating and drag models are a nightmare to deal with. I had a contract to get a flight above 70km - at first I would overheat the parachute on the way up, so had to adjust the limits on my SRB, then I had problems slowing down enough to deploy parachutes. Finally managed to make it from a relatively shallow 85km Ap, firing my chutes once I got to 270 m/s and they opened up just 30m above the water. If this is how things are gonna be, they need to move drag chutes a lot earlier in the tech tree.
