I believe many, if not all of the planet packs are Kopernicus dependant. So planet pack developers have to wait for Kopernicus to update when a new KSP release comes out.
That said, I am running KSP 1.8 and love Outer Planets Mod (OPM) and Minor Planets Expansion. The two together finish out the Kerbol system with a full family of gas giants and several dwarf planets, asteroids and at least one comet to visit.
I like these because they provide many more worlds to explore and are not too memory excessive.
Enjoy the journey.

Far easier to use Wild Blue Pathfinder mod.
Inflatable bases are awesome.

Hello @Sky Whale
Please note that the unit refereed is not meters (m).
Speed-of-light = 299,792.458 km/s
I thought speed of light was 299,792,458 meters per second
or 299,792.5 kilometers per second
or 182,282 miles per second?
Given ratio of miles to kilometers, the above seems right.

I so need to get a life.

Four minute load time for me.
I'm running 36 mods, nine of which are part mods, on a four year old HP laptop.
I'm bumping up against my memory limits so I will be purchasing a new laptop as a Christmas gift to me, just to run KSP.
To paraphrase JFK, ich bin ein Kerbal.

21 Minutes?
30 minutes?
Geez, I pull my hair out waiting the 3 to 4 minutes mine takes.

Why would you change a stock part? Because you can.
Is it cheating? There is no such thing as cheating in a single player game.
Enjoy the game and have fun any way you choose.

Change your style of play.
When I got burn out a couple of years ago, I changed my SOP to building rockets and planes with an eye towards hyper efficiency in terms of part count and cost. I also challenged myself to reduce my mod dependency. I went from 40+ mods to less than half as many.
It' amazing how the creative challenge sparked my desire to play again.
Have fun.

Solar panels still work on Duna.
Check out Wild Blue Industries mod for some cool rovers with built in rooftop solar panels.
I prefer skycranes because they provide better control for a precise landing.
Have fun and let us know about your future adventures.

Why do I feel like reading "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"?
You guys are truly talented.
Bravo!
Do I dare disturb the universe?

There are tons of helpful videos on Youtube.

Just found this.
What an awesome piece of work.
Thank you so much.
I second the vote for including OPM bodies in this.
Thanks again for the great contribution.

Can I suggest the mods put a 12 month moratorium on any posts containing the words MechJeb, cheating, love or hate.
Happy flying to all.

It's in there. I think it is actually under the MKS category rather than the rover category. I don't have access to my game at the moment. There is also the Malemute rover also made by @RoverDude. And a nice mod from @Angel-125 with rover parts
I swear by Buffalo.
Extremely lightweight and very versatile.

Of course! Its KSP, always been like that. Why would anyone care how anyone else plays this lovely game??
In KSP, everything goes. Modify config files, play only in hack gravity, build boats exclusively, modify the planets... whatever you want. You might even share everything you come up with here on the forum and nobody will give you hard time. Its a single player sandbox game and we are all aware of this.
As for MechJeb, personally I appreciate all the information it gives you, but I never used any kind of autopiloting whatsoever. These days I sometimes settle for KER on some installs, does the exact same thing as far as I am concerned. Tend to choose whichever one has less performance impact on that KSP version.
Exactly how I feel.
I modify configs all the time. I change parts to suit my needs.
I'm having a blast as I explore the Kerbol system.
And lastly, I love MechJeb.

I did a similar thing once by accident.
I was playing around with Hyperedit and moved Eve into a very low Kerbin orbit. It was beautiful. Wish I had taken a screen shot.
Fortunately I loaded a quick save and restored the Kerbol system.

I looked into this one. While I think it’s be great to have, I went with Stockalike Station Parts. I’m trying desperately to find a balance between keeping a fun game while also not killing my poor 6 year old laptop... so alas, I went with that!
Also, thanks to all you guys for responding! I’m always so impressed with how cordial and helpful everyone is on this forum.
You might want to try a mod called Janitor's Closet. It let's you selectively prune parts to save memory. I have an old laptop as well and pruning parts and deleting unnecessary files saves a lot of memory, speeds up loading and reduces lag.
Have fun.

I second Pathfinder.
Lots of options and very easy to use.
I have bases on the Mun, Duna and Slate.
Good luck and have fun.

3 Minutes? Congratulations!
I'm running KSP on a i5 MacMini with 16GRAM and 2.3GHz. And it takes 10.
Just timed it and time to fire up was actually 4:36. I have 8 GRAM and a 2.3 GHz.
For me, pruning unneeded parts with Janitors Closet seems to make a big difference in boot up time. Would be interested in other player's thoughts.

I've got a 3+ year old HP Pavilion I3 laptop and when I load KSP with 36 installed mods and 1285 patches it takes about 3 minutes to fire up.
Another tip which may help is to use Janitors Closet to purge unwanted parts. I also got rid of the KSpedia files.

As has already been said, you can either use the Alt-F12 "Create a Kerbal" option, or you can go into the persistent file and edit the gender of an existing Kerbal.

Because a few bugs on 1.4.4 are so nasty that we prefer to live with the old ones. People using KK and Kopernicus know what I mean.
I run Kopernicus so 1.4.4 was a no fly zone.

I finally crossed over to the dark side and upgraded to 1.4.3.
Chose that version because all my mods have either upgraded to that version or are stable in it.
Played around with it a bit yesterday and all seems to be well.
Happy flying everyone.
