  1. It happened again. Those well-meaning kerbals up and forgot about their space program. Maybe they met evil alternate versions of themselves. Maybe they were blinded on the edge of the cosmos. Maybe their home was eaten by anomalies. Maybe an asteroid brought the mysteries of outer space to their doorstep. Or maybe they're just pieces in a game that nobody cared about anymore. Unfortunately, we'll never know because, hello, we don't care. Space? Whazzat? Years passed. Or was it days? Better mash that backslash, or they'll be the same thing. A new idea. A tale of triumph. A crazy, mashed together creation. A daring challenge for those who should know better. Something draws them back. Something raises the flags and fills the fuel tanks. Something new. Something glorious. A new story unfolds, filling in the gaps. To make space, the old is discarded. Thrown aside. Forgotten. - But this time, something remembered. R E M Ǝ M B E R A KSP Collaborative Game based on @Cydonian Monk's Forgotten Space Program (snazzy banner coming soon!) What is this? Forgotten Space Program is set in a world where the process of updating Kerbal Space Program has drastic implications for the Kerbals. Each version change resets Kerbin to a pre-determined time, right before the space program starts, but curiously, leaves all objects in space untouched. I had the idea to start a collaborative game similar to the Collaborative Station, in which each player controls the space program during one "cycle" of the reset process. Each player will start their game from scratch, building and teching up... until their turn ends, at which point Kerbin is wiped clean, their vessels in orbit become relics of the past, and the save file is sent to the next player. You can play as normal and come across the efforts of previous players, or somehow work together to preserve progress across resets. (This type of game may be better known as a succession game to some.) Some specifics include: The game will be lightly-to-moderately modded. It won't be computer-melting, but it'll be based on a few well known, stable mod sets. Interface or cosmetic mods (Scatterer, KER, Trajectories, etc.) can differ between players. I'll write some kind of program to take a savefile, extract the data for ships and kerbals, perform the necessary manipulations (such as changing kerbal names to avoid conflict or setting vessels to unknown). All you'll have to do to play is create a new savefile, and push a button. For obvious reasons, we can't have the reset cycle be the update cycle of the game. Instead, it will be a random amount of in-game time, determined randomly at the start of your turn. Somewhere around 2-5 years, it might be changed later. Either way, it's unpredictable and unchangeable. When the timer buzzes, your turn is over. (I think I can get Kerbal Alarm Clock to do that.) I'd like to check interest in this idea before starting it, however, so if you: Would be interested in playing a turn of this game Have comments, questions, or concerns regarding the idea Are a mod, and know the proper place for this post (fun fact: I have no idea where this goes. Challenges and Mission Ideas, because Collaborative Space Station went there? Mission Reports, because it'll be soon filled with (many) mission reports if it goes right? Fan Works, even though it's not a typical fan work? General Discussion, because that's all it is right now?) ...then please reply below saying so. If enough people want to play, I'll replace this blurb with a full intro post in a few weeks. What is the modpack going to be? Notes: KSP Version 1.8.1 for now, might upgrade later No DLCs! (I don't know how to turn them off so someone else will have to find out) The 1.9 version for Near Future Technologies is back-compatible. Download the latest version. If it's taking too much RAM, you can delete the IVAs folder in Stockalike Station Parts. It's optional. Multiple mods might bundle different versions of ModuleManager, check in your GameData and delete all but the latest version Uses about 2.7 GB of RAM on my computer. Make sure you're running KSP 64 bit. What's that weird E symbol in the title? That's a turned E. It's supposed to be an approximation of the logical symbol for Existential Quantification, and represents "for one". It denotes a statement that applies to at least one object in the universe. It is specifically contrasted with Ɐ, the symbol for Universal Quantification, which represents a statement that applies "for every" object in the universe. Essentially, if you can't remember everything, at least remember something. ...in all fairness, I just threw it in because it looks cool.
  2. Which raises an interesting question. Will we get two crashes in rapid succession, or one extra-long crash, when you go through two versions at once?
  3. I will if people are interested. Another thing to remember: Reset resource scan data. Whether that's Stock or SCANSat. Resetting the scansat maps may be a hassle... Also, should kerballed vessels be marked unowned at all? I feel like any Kerbal crews would instantly call the new Kerbin and ask for directions.
  4. So just as a quick check, to reset Kerbin I'm going to have to: Reset Funds, Science, and Reputation to game-start values Delete all Contracts Delete science experiments already done Delete craft landed on Kerbin (maybe?) Set all craft not landed on Kerbin to unowned Delete all kerbals that have not been to space Set all kerbals in orbit to "rescue" Add a roman numeral after Kerbal names to denote that they're from an earlier cycle Did I miss anything? Also, @Cydonian Monk, what's your modpack for Forgotten Space Program? Would any mods work well with this? Like this post to express interest in this idea.
  5. You'd also have to reset the contracts. And the World's First achievements. And the science found. And... Ugh. Frankly, I wonder what can even be done. Eventually it'll become a game of "get to orbit, add something to the station before time's up" Edit: I'm probably going to write some code to do the Kerbin-reset for me. I wonder if I could actually enforce the "leave anyone that has been to space" thing...
  6. May be completely unrelated, but who would play a community game/succession game based on this premise? Take the persistence file, play for 2 years or so, then wipe everything on Kerbin back to original (vehicles, kerbs, funds... everything) and pass it to the next guy? See how far we can collectively get in 2 year spurts.
  7. I love how you pointed out the irony of the crew making it millions of miles to another planet and back, only to almost get killed by petty politics within a cosmic inch of their home.
  8. I haven't really caught up, but just gonna ask @Just Jim - have you considered doing this for NaNoWriMo?
  9. I note that concrete is generally not considered a legitimate material for a hill. No hill.
  10. Yeah, but if we had warp we'd establish interplanetary colonies on the very edge of our warp capability, where it would take weeks to get a ship, etc etc... One dynamic I can see interplanetary colonies having is that communication times are low but travel times are fast, so if you want to change the rules on a colony you can send the message straight away but you can't get forces there for several months. I feel as if wars of revolution would be changed by this because you overcome the enemy forces in-system, then have to deal with the massive fleet coming a few weeks later.
  11. It took me until I saw "Scarborough Fair" to figure it out, and then "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Dangling Conversation" really hit it home. Simon and Garfunkel songs. Those two are great. And wait, when they say "science over so and so" you can be in orbit? SERIOUSLY? I'm launching a survey craft to take advantage of that right now if that's the case.
  12. Wait, I don't get it. Kenlie makes it sound like the Kerbulan would be upset if he's in perfect health but his companion is crippled. Why? They don't have any concept of friendship right?
  13. I'm saying he should hold the gun at the Kerbulans and monologue about how he doesn't want to use it but is willing to defend his friends, and then kill the Kerbulans in a gruesome but utterly karmariffic way. Making them charge into a not pressurized section, for example, or shooting enough holes to let the air out.
  14. Who are you kidding? The reconfigured Prosperity and LDRO station likely still constitute a viable interplanetary craft. If Camwise can cut a deal with the Companies before it slams into the moon, we'll be perfectly back on track. Since it's altered past the point of recognition, I suggest we rechristen it the Lisabeth. He just disconnected them, he didn't destroy anything. If he ever makes peace with Trans-Pacific, he'll likely mount a salvage mission and incorporate them into a new lunar orbit station.
  15. Crowning Moment of Awesome. We've literally waited years for this. So, what does lithobraking a space station into the Moon accomplish, exactly? Does he actually plan to land it? Or just ruin the hard work of the Resource companies?
  16. When I play chess against someone armed, I have at least two missiles trained on him. One for him to dodge, one to explode the place he dodges to.
  17. I think there's some internet places where you can talk overseas for free. Oh wait.
  18. This is in fact a serious relief. The poll results are now an in-universe item and thus need not be followed. If they remained at 4th wall - level there is a seriously higher threat that someone dies. Now, though... it's just a decision by the Kerbulans on who to kill first. As they likely won't win, it likely will never get used. PHEW! Thought there was some actual dangerous foreshadowing there! Actually there is almost zilch chance that @Kuzzter will carry out the list as it would be too anticlimactic that the Kerbulans get exactly what they want... Also, I love "It's only treason if you lose"
  19. Hm... It might kill your data, but sending them through your phone with a USB cable might be a thought. Don't do it if you don't want to, but just saying...
  20. And more merciful. You've had, what, one betrayal and painful death so far?
