  1. I've preped my ship but haven't started the trip. I found that it became easiest to just to a SSTO ISRU ship. If you go LKO-Mun-Minmus-Duna-Ike-Kerbin, then the hardest leg is Duna-Ike, which requires about 2500 dV. Here is my ship with mechjeb readout. That's the LKO launcher in the background.

  3. I have a feature request. IIUC, "sensitivity" determines the minimum throttle GT will apply to a rocket while it is keeping the Time to Ap at the target value. When I launch with a liquid + solid first stage, often as the solids burn out my TWR is way up around 3. GT only adjusts the throttle on the liquids since they are the only things throttleable. so if the solids are providing half the thrust, and sensitivity is set to .3, then the overall thrust is only reduces to (.5 + .5 * .3) = .65 rather than .5. This runs up the TtA. So I often launch with sensitivity set to 0 or .01 and then change it to .3 after the solids are spent. Would it be possible to have GT adjust the throttle so that the *overall* thrust is sensitivity*max thrust? So for instance if sensitivity is .3 and solids provide a quarter of the thrust, then set sensitivity to 1/9 so that .25 + .75 * .0667 = .25 + .05 = .3 as desired, rather than .25 + .75 * .3 = .25 + .225 = .475.
  4. FYI, installed KSP on the new machine, with all of the graphics turned down, it runs realtime. My old machine only did about half time for launches.

  8. Thanks for the reply. That was what I figured. Unfortunately, the cost difference is 28%. That is hard to justify for a 10-20% increase in frame rates, for me at least.
  9. I'm getting a new laptop, an Kaby Lake XPS 13. I'm getting the non-touch 1920x1080 screen. I am deciding between the i7-7500u and the i5-7200u The only difference seems to be in clock speeds and cache. The i5 has 2.5/2.9/3.1 GHz (unturbo, all cores turbo, one core turbo) with 3MB L3 Cache The i7 has 2.7/3.0/3.5 GHz with 5MB. How much of a difference can I expect for KSP with that difference? They have the same integrated graphics (only 5% clock speed difference) Thanks!

  11. I think this was a mechjeb GT interaction. I had SmartASS from MechJeb keeping the craft vertical still on from the descent, and that was overriding the GT pitch control.
  12. In terms of Eve, I just used it. The only change I made was to set the starting velocity much higher, 250 iirc, to both get out of some of the soup and to stabalize to vertical after launching from a tilted base since my landing wasn't perfect.
  13. Alt+F12 followed by HE worked perfectly. I wanted to use the heatshield on my lander to aerocapture the whole rig (including transfer ship) that means it has to be exposed. I did a quick experiment and a the mk1-0 pod is almost all of the way to mk1-0 pod & nosecone compared to lander-can+docking port. I think I'll use the mk1-0 pod with a decoupler then a docking port to attach to my transfer ship. My design worked, with 2k extra dV, from about 1km altitude using Gravityturn (the mod) with a start of 200 mps and a target of 110 (all else default settings). The flipping was my fault. I had changed one of the decouplers to "enable crossfeed" and forgot that it didn't change both symmetric pairs. So I was getting uneven fuel usage and uneven engine flameouts on my asparaguses. I'm going to try to slim it down now. It weighs 71 tons empty. (ISRU to fuel up when I get there)
  14. Thanks for your reply. I know you don't need to dock after I get back up. But how did you get that thing to Eve in the first place? Testing a design on Eve is a PITA, so I wanted to get a checklist before then of things I can do on Kerbin. Right now my checklist is: Launches fine on Kerbin under (1.7g). Is "pointy." has about 9k dV (vac) on vectors & spikes. Eve SLTWR of 1.2 or above on each stage start. Then I might start testing it on Eve. (Does hyperedit's ship lander work reliably?)
  15. I've been having trouble with own lander, and had some questions. How did you dock that thing to the transfer craft? I have been using shielded ports on the nose for that, but that forces me to use a lander-can or an inline mk1 cockpit. I'm having trouble with my designs flipping, so I've been trying to cut down on nose drag. The best I can think of is either a shielded port with mk1 inline (if thats better dragwise than a landercan) or mk1-0 pod with a naked top. (jettisoning a port) Is the reported dV at Eve SLT? Did you have extra dV when you made it to orbit? In terms of testing, I've been hacking gravity on Kerbin to 1.7 is that reasonable to test for filppiness?

  19. I download 1.7.6 and it seems to have fixed a problem I've been having where GT wouldn't ever turn when launching from Mun or Minmus. It was an intermittent problem, so maybe I just got lucky. I'll let you know if it comes back.
  20. I think the appropriate tool is calculus of variations. You will want to work in phase space. Then kinematics puts restrictions on your path within that space, you will a two variable control function (AoA & Throttle). If you use total dV as your Euler-Lagrange functional, then you would analytically determine what a locally optimal path in phase space looks like. You would get something like "if, are moving with this velocity vector at this altitude, you should have this angle of attack with this throttle. Then you would have to optimize the starting point of your path to find a globally optimal path. That part would likely have to be done numerically, or in KSP through trial and error.
  21. Remember that drag goes against the current direction of velocity, also, you will probably want to use radians for your angles. Finally, this looks like you are about to apply a standard calculus based approach. The problem with that is that you are not just optimizing over a single parameter. You are actually optimizing over the functions of time, pitch and thrust level. You will have to use a calculus of variations approach to get a full solution.

Assuming free fuel, the best departure orbit varies by destination: So, if you want to have the smallest vehicle or use the least delta-v, you should park your craft at that altitude and have a fuel tanker come and fill it up. Personally, I launched a mining rig/fuel tanker to minmus (two actually LF+Ox and LF only), Did a couple of fill-up runs, convinced myself that it could deliver fuel to LKO and return. Then I just launch empty to the apprioate gate orbit, and fuel up with hyperedit.
