  1. I'm starting a new Kerbalism/RealFuels save with BDB and ProbesPlus as main mods and just have a few questions for anyone that has tried this before...

-Which rescale is the best? I've tried both 2.5x and 3.2x, but can't really test everything.

-Aside from Titan, which boosters also need a slight boost in TWR?

-Is there a way to configure TAC-LS configs for Kerbalism? Resources are the same, it would just need a slight change in anmounts (and for some reason none of the cfgs I've tried writing have worked). Also, using TAC can create a few issues, even with proper configs.

Thanks to some help from @Omega482 my pads are coming out pretty nicely!

    Current plan:
    LC-39A            (Shuttle/Ares1X/SaturnV/Falcon9/FalconHeavy)
    LC-41               (Atlas V)
    LC-40               (Falcon 9)
    LC-19               (Gemini)
    LC-17A            (DeltaII
    LC-5/6             (Redstone/Mercury)

Since you're planning on adding both new SLC-40 & 41... Are you also planning on doing the original (Titan) version of the pads?

    v1.5.1 Update

    nswogfh.pngu2CbxpD.png

    Changes:

New SRB-4 thrust curves - Performance is similar on the shuttle but they should be more predictable for other types of lifters

Fixed collider issue on custom name plates

    Added:

Heavy Payload Mount and Payload Bay Decoupler - Set of decouplers to mount large satellites or other payloads securely into the cargo bay. The Payload Bay Decoupler also acts as a strut. (placeholder textures on some of these)

Shuttle Payload Technologies by @MrMeeb - A stock version of SPT has been added into Cormorant. This includes 2 Payload bay options and a full set of Skylab parts for all your science needs.

    Heavy Decoupler Set

    -snip-

    Shuttle Payload Technologies

    -snip-

Glad to see you're back! And SPT is no longer abandoned. Will try out those decouplers asap (I have some spy peaceful scientific satellites to launch and they are too big for the current payload thingy).

On an unrelated topic, I recently found this Gem in the Mod Development section and thought (not for the first time) 'Man, we need a section in the BDB OP to collect all these great Bluedogalike mods!'. Then I realized it wouldn't do to make @CobaltWolf put it together as he darn near runs himself ragged just developing his own mod! So I propose we put together a list of other part mods and projects that help expand BDB so it can get added to the OP! With luck this will give us even moar threads that we can habitually check every day (I can't be the only one!) and help cut down on the 'OMG can mak a BDB ver of X?!?!" posts. Also we (I) can stop discovering these great BDB expansions and then promptly forget what they are called and where to find them later... ;)

I can't believe I haven't discovered that before. As much, as I love Apollo, when used with the Shuttle it's really limited (EM-1 is about as much as you can do without completely changing the stack)

I've added the 2018 BFR parts to Github!

    BE AWARE!

This is pure a test build. DO NOT use this with your current save!

    Things that are added:

    • BFS Command pod
    • BFS fuel tank
    • BFS Engine Shroud
    • SL Raptor engine
    • 2 actuated fins
    • 1 fixed tail fin
    • BFB Interstage
    • BFB Fuel tank
    • BFB Engine cluster

Massive thank you to @JadeOfMaar for helping me out getting things fairly good balanced!

About re-entry: Please be aware that the BFS is very unstable during re-entry. Any help or tips to improve this is highly appreciated!
There's a craft file in the Ships/VAB folder to try out and see how things are set up.

    Happy (test) launches!

    -snip-

Great! Can't check it out today, but just wondering... Are those fins actuated by KA or are they proper airbrakes/control surfaces?

I don't know.  Wouldn't it have been cheaper to just make a recoverable S-IC stage?   :)

I mean sure you would need something like 10 J-93 engines ala my Avatar and metal impinged wheels again like my avatar to properly do it and survive the Mach-3 environment an unloaded S-IC could fly in.... but...

On a serious note.  Nice set of pictures and thanks for sharing!

Will probably have to do something like that for future missions. The one I posted already pushed the Shuttle to it's limits, it filled the entire cargo bay and used the entire ET + had to compensate ~200 m/s with OMS. I could increase the capacity slightly by using these but flyback S-IC is probably still the best choice for munar surface missions...

    TEASER! :P

My 2018 BFS will have the following parts:

    • Command pod (with docking port/hatch (for cargo or rovers? or whatever!) and IVA)
    • 1 actuated forward fin
    • Fuel tank (middle section)
    • Engine fairing + placeholders where fins can attach to via nodes)
        - 1 top fin
        - 1 Left actuated rear fin
        - 1 right actuated rear fin
    • 1 AFT Cargo part you can place around the engines (KIS support)
    • 2 engine layout placeholders
    • A single VAC and single SL engine

My 2018 BFB will have the following parts:

    • Prope core (looks like interstage for BFS)
    • Main fueltank
    • 1 side fin

I'm not sure if I keep the BFB engine cluster as one part. My main concern is FPS when you have 31 engines attached as 31 parts.

    • Engine mount ?
    • 1 SL Raptor engine ?

About the rear fins... Are you planning to make them as control surfaces or actuators using a mod like KerbalActuators (which I'm assuming would be the best choice since it's already required)?

So is that a Shuttle rescue system or an Apollo Rescue system?

Shuttle rescue system is the shuttle

I do actually vaguely recall a study I ran across once that seemed to use modified Apollos as a recoverable/refurbishable beyond-LEO crew vehicle in a Shuttle-based launch architecture.

Do you have any links? I'd love to read more about it and maybe definitely recreate it.

Who actually uses the various solid motors (besides the radial Titan SRBs)? Does anybody in the community actually bother dealing with solid kick stages? Does anybody use 1.5m or 1.875m launchers that primarily use the existing BDB solids like the Castor-120?

I use both. Kick stages (especially Star-37 & 48) are really useful with any launch vehicle and are some of my most commonly used parts. While I don't use Castor-120 as often as the kick stages, I have flown quite a few Carrack and Delta-Lite rockes.
