I believe CKAN checks you're ksp version and finds mods that way. Also CKAN can delete mods just go to the mods you have and uncheck them. Press Apply Changes and it will delete them from the file. HOWEVER the mods will still be in the cache, so go to CKAN settings and clear your cache.

For me personally, I enjoy the visual mod Scatterer. It gives planets with an atmosphere a clean look. Also the sunrises from Duna are pretty neeto.
