  1. I just have to plug what I think is the best and by far most underrated (or, rather, underknown) tutorial series for beginners from NerdySpaceMan. I struggled in KSP until this one. I'm ever grateful. I've mentioned it before in other threads and will continue to do so. Scott Manley is a legend, but I find him at his best for intermediate to advanced. This guy just nailed this. It is so good, and deserves a lot more views than it has. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfqMOe2iRVA&list=PLPPY_K3b_uqZL6X6dZBeWjfXWRk9EOCwK
  2. Yeah, it was not nearly enough. After I replied to you I went back and mucked around. I copied the wing and engine assembly and slapped it on the bottom. So, 41! Will cruise over 300, can get up to 450 in a dive and carries 22. It needs some touching up; the workmanship is a bit slapdash...
  3. Ugh, that sounded like a challenge, so I lost another hour coming up with this. Only around 320 mps, but it can carry 14 and a lot of fuel! There are 21 Junos, so I've got a 1.5 Juno per passenger ratio. Is that good???? I was supposed to be working from home, so I guess I'll be finishing up through dinnertime (And knowing me, I'll be tweaking it for the next week until I relent and post it on KerbalX).
  4. This jalopy is far from taking the prize, BUT I did manage to get it to 545 while climbing. It took several minutes, and it seemed to prefer flying upside down. It maxed out around 570 in a very shallow descent. I'm quite proud of that since I knocked three engines off on takeoff...
  5. I'm pretty new so have not used a lot yet, but I'd have to vote for Maneuver Node Evolved. As a learner, the basic node is small and really fiddly. This is larger, easier to grab hold of and has great features like the ability to add a maneuver to the periapsis or descending nodes etc.
  6. I asked this very question myself. I realized I knew how to get coordinates from the end of a mission, but had no idea how to navigate either.
  7. Thanks! I'm relatively new to KSP and don't even know what the cheat console is. Also, I was not sure what you meant by editing my craft to have an orbit. But good fun!
  8. I was too, but that was the sole thing that did it. I think it is that combined with a very light nose. My heavier aircraft don't have this problem. I also wonder if it is something that has cropped up in the latest update.
  9. Okay, this probably does not qualify, but since I built this last night (not actually for the challenge) and it came out pretty well, here it is anyway. Perhaps an exhibition entry The first video is the stopping and 180 degree turn. This version has the ramjets on it since the panthers just don't get the speed you want. I took off from the Desert Runway which is already at an altitude of 823 meters, so I hope you will forgive exceeding 500 meters. The second video (complete with 100 year old music) is what I put up on KerbalX today. It is a combination of three flights since I crashed twice, but I was going pretty nuts. This is the original Panther configuration. It really shines in quick, low-speed maneuvers.
  10. @Laie, @recursive_mouse, @bewing, @Xd the great Thanks for all your advice; I figured it out. The landing gear is very unforgiving if it is angled. I had it oriented so the gear folds forward, but it was also angled slightly forward. You can see this in the videos. I straightened all the gear out so the struts are perfectly vertical, and voilà, no problems. I wish I had had this insight earlier!
  11. I'm rational on space missions, but with planes, the weirder the better. Part of that is finding out what you can get away with. What will fly and why?
  12. I think there is a real bug here. Here is another plane I built, doing the same. Ignore the first bounce, I was hitting play on the recorder while trying to fly, but you can see on the landing what happens. And I need the clearance of the medium gear for this plane. Again, have tried various combinations. Also, a few times I have put on the brakes and hit timewarp just to move the sun around a bit and the plane just lifted of the runway and exploded. I'd be happy to upload both aircraft. How would you recommend doing this? I'm on KerbalX, but of course I do not wish to make a public upload of a broken plane.
  13. Oddly, after all these months, I still don't know how to do this. I've got a seaplane with a cargo bay. I've got a little boat I want to put inside it, and I put a docking port on the boat to hold it in place. How do I do that? I can't open the boat and make it a subassembly because KSP won't accept an entire craft with a root part as a subassembly. How do I get the boat, which I built and tested separately into my plane? I could load one on the runway, drive it off to the side, then launch the plane, switch and drive the boat into the bay, but that seems clunky. It also means I cannot upload it as a unit if I want to share it.
  14. I took your advice, and that seemed to do it. Though really it seems weird that you cannot set the gear so that it will work. Often you need to use larger gear for clearance. @Xd the greatI tried both weak spring and strong damper, strong spring and weak damper, both strong, both weak and still had the bounce issue. Oddly, if I landed nose first and a bit hard, the craft would not bounce initially. If I put it down on the rear gear and dropped the nose, it was like a pogo stick. Anyway, now with smaller gear and working.
  15. Vertically landing, no, that falls under VTOL, but what you did was fine. And if it floats and takes off from water, it is a seaplane in my book :-) As for saves, it took me like 13 tries so that is totally legit. I imagine that was a cold swim.
  16. Yes, I set the override all the time now. It seems nothing will track straight without doing so. But as far as bounce goes, I've not had any problems in the past to this degree. Also, the aircraft is so short that I need to put the front and rear gear at the extreme ends, otherwise it just creates tracking and other landing issues. But again, I've not had the same degree of problem in the past.
  17. My stubby little plane bounces like crazy on the front wheel. I've tried numerous combinations of spring strength and dampening, and I cannot solve this. Ironically, I've had a bit better luck with the rear gear (though it is also problematic), and considering it is really oversized for this aircraft, I would assume I would have more problems with it than the medium one on the front. The video is with the front gear a 1.3 spring and .9 damper, but I have tried extremes at either end and cannot seem to tame it sufficiently. Thoughts? I realize this is a light aircraft and my approach was a little steep, but this seems a bit over the top.
  18. It may be my imagination or maybe I am just finding bugs I had not encountered before, but I swear my KSP is just running terribly as of late. I've put in a bug report for the fact that when I test a large (but not small) Hydrofoil in water via Mission Builder, it explodes. As for aircraft in regular mode: My small landing gear is bouncing all over the place. So, I changed landing gear settings, and now suddenly my engines are flaming out on takeoff. So I tried reloading the aircraft. No luck, BUT if I move to the regular airfield from the Desert Airfield, the problem goes away. Am I encountering known bugs or could it be I have corrupted files? It did install some mods which I have since removed as I found one of them was causing issues in other parts of gameplay. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  19. Funny, I just saw your post right after I edited mine with this exact same example (see above). Is it yours? It's fantastic. And yes, that is totally in the spirit of the challenge.
  20. Agreed. I did not have an all-out offensive comment, but a very weird one with implied bad language. I see it is also gone, so I assume I was visited by the same. But as you said @kataeochi, it seems pretty rare around Kerbal land. I really enjoy how generally polite and encouraging these forums are.
  21. The stock Stearwing A300. The first plane I successfully landed, so I have a soft spot for it. But let's be honest, it is not the most exciting aircraft out there. So, in the spirit of innovation, here is the challenge: Take the stock Stearwing and customize it. Make it faster, slicker, sillier, spaceworthy, submersible...The finished product does not need to be an aircraft. Rules: 1. You may change and/or remove engines and landing gear if you wish. 2. You must not remove any other parts, however, you can move parts around, and add as many additional parts as you like. 3. No restrictions on Mods (though please indicate what you have used). Of course, all stock creativity is greatly appreciated and wins kudos. 4. Anything not explicitly forbidden by the above rules is not only allowed, but encouraged. 5. Please include photos and/or video and brag unashamedly about why your modification is simply the best, fastest, coolest, weirdest. I've got to learn Adobe Illustrator for work (last used it years ago and have forgotten everything), so I will use that as an excuse to make some badges. Categories TBD based on what people come up with, though probably one in each category for stock and modded. The example below is just a basic three-minute alteration. I'm working on something better and much farther outside the box. But you get the idea... Or this, which I created on the fly when the Mission Builder came out. Again, this is still pretty basic. You can tell by the engine placement that quality control was pretty lax on the assembly line that day. or this awesome video I found:
  22. SOLVED! Modular Flight Integrator is the guilty party! I don't even remember why I installed it; I think I needed it for something else that wound up not working in 1.4.3 and the other stuff got left. This was a good clue. I did not even realize I was at Baikerbanur. The dish and launch pad were missing and the building was weird. I went back and compared old screenshots and realized I was in the same place. vs: I was also clued in that something bigger was going on by some very weird parachute behavior. See video: I was actually able to get to the building. Once I parachuted in, though it got stuck in midair and then had a weird error. I also taxied in, this time going very slowly. I did not explode, but I had a fireball erupt around me. If anyone is interested, a compilation of explosions and weirdness:
  23. I saw this on the large map indicated in green. I thought at first it was another tracking station, until I got down low. I saved my game (since my landings are not always the best) and as I approached, I blew up in midair. The game claims I crashed into the ground. I tried 3 times on the same route...no luck. The 4th time I tried landing a bit outside the low level depression the egg was in. I landed fine, but as I tried to taxi to the easter egg I just blew up. Its like I hit a forcefield. There is a video and screenshot below. I hid it so as not to spoil this for others.
