I don't know to be honest, it is totally random if it blows up or not. I a guessing it is just borderline on the stress of the side couplers. Sometimes it rips it off, other times it does not. Here is the craft file.

KSP asterisk rocket Not entirely sure how this works, but it does have a 50% chance to blow up on take off lol What makes it work at all, is the center srb that never fires. For some reason if that is turned on, the entire thing will explode every time.
