  1. Hi all! There are some amazing mods for aircraft cockpits, though I have yet to find one for the iconic cockpit shape of the SU-34. Is there an existing mod that has this part? Thanks a lot!
  2. Chapter 1 - Nightmares Never Go Away The doorbell rang, a piercing noise cutting through the still house. Chris Kerman sat up in bed groggily. Damn, he had just slept so well, and now someone had decided to disturb his slumber in the most annoying way possible. Who could it be? The doorbell rang again, even more urgent this time. Whoever was there wasn't giving up. "Alright I'm coming" He called out as he slipped a shirt over himself. He clumped down the stairs, when he noticed the flashing blue lights outside. The hell was going on? A pit started forming in his stomach as he undid the door and opened it, peering around the edges to see who it was. The lights were blinding, and he squinted as he looked at the two figures in front of him. One took his cap off, with a KUPD badge on it, and both looked very solemn. Chris was having a tough time taking this all in. The lights, the sombre figures, the badge of the Kerbal United Police Department. The Kerbal on the right, looked at him and said softly: "Mr C Kerman? May we come in?" Chris only nodded, and opened the door quietly. The pit in his stomach deepened. What was going on? "Please sit down" the Kerbal said, in that same soft voice. Chris didn't recognize it, but it was the kind of voice parents use to tell their children that their favourite pets are dead, and not coming back. A thought occurred to Chris that they were ordering him about in his own home, in a patronising sort of way, like he needed to be told what to do. He didn't like where this was going. The two Kerbals opposite him, looked awkward and looked at each other. The one on the left spoke up this time. "Mr C Kerman, we uhh..." he trailed off, not knowing quite what to say. Chris only looked confused. "We need you to be brave, Chris, okay?" Chris nodded numbly. " We have reports that there was a plane crash earlier today, and we think your wife and daughter were on board." Chris' stomach dropped, and all the breath went out of his chest. He couldn't think straight. His... What? How? They're wrong, they have to be! This couldn't happen, they were coming tomorrow, for Kraken's sake! He almost didn't hear the figure on the right speaking again. "We don't know how many survivors there are, and not all have been found, but we are expecting the worst. We are very sorry. We are doing all we can at the moment but..." He lifted up his hands in a gesture of defeat. It was all over. Chris still couldn't comprehend what had happened even after the two policekerbals had left. Then the enormity hit him. HIS wife. HIS daughter. Both gone. They would never come back. He leaned on the wall of the living room, where the meeting had just taken place. On the mantelpiece was all three of them at the Kerbal Space Centre, after they had witnessed the launch of the new Black Arrow rocket that both he and his wife, Linda, had worked on at Rockomax. He took it down, looking at both their faces. So happy. He slid down the wall, clutching the photograph, sobbing uncontrollably.... With a start, he jolted awake. He woke up in a cold sweat, with tears streaming down his cheeks. He just stayed there, trembling. He got out of bed and shakily made his way over to the kitchen. Oh Kraken. That same nightmare again. It had only been four weeks since then, and he was still not getting any sleep. It haunted him at every corner. He could barely even go in the living room any more. He opened a cupboard and got down a small jar. He cracked it opened and took out a pill, and swallowed it. Filled the glass and gulped it. The same pills that he had been taking for the past four weeks. He took out another one, even though it was over the prescribed dose, recommended by the doctor. He swallowed it slightly painfully, and drained the glass of water. He sat himself down in a chair. 00:21 am. He wouldn't bother to go back to sleep. He put his head in his hands and stayed there till morning...
  3. Hello everyone and welcome to my first Kerbal series! I am very excited to start this, where we will be following the journey of a certain Chris Kerman. I will try to upload new sections every 2 weeks, and possibly add an imgur album at the end of each chapter (opinions on this welcome). DISCLAIMER: This is all my own work, and any similarities to any other Kerbal fan fiction is entirely unintentional Prologue Chris looked out of the capsule's tiny window. The surface of the Mun stretched boundlessly, slightly curving at the edges of the window. His destination. Probably for forever. Everyone had said it was lunacy. That he was mad, a weirdo who had lost it. Not that he cared what they thought. He was here in his own bubble, encased for the rest of time, cut off from the rest of Kerbal-kind. He noted the grey, blotched surface, pockmarked with craters, and bumpy with mountains that stretched out to the stars. There was something so serene about it, Chris thought. So much like himself. Bland, nothing of interest. Nothing compared with its parent planet. He felt like a moon without a planet, floating endlessly through unlimitless time, ready to be affected by a planets gravity, moving him in a new direction. He thought of his family, and what they would think of him, if they could see him. A small tear welled up, but he shook it away. Or, rather tried to shake it away. It just balled up on his eye, growing slowly. He snatched a towel from the DISPOSABLE crate, and stuffed in a bag after wiping his face. He floated over to his seat and strapped himself in. A new stage was beginning for him...
  4. Very interesting..... Can't wait for the next installment!
  5. Ooooooh, magic boulders now! The mystery deepens... I am on edge for the next chapter!
  6. I would like to see this as an option, but I would understand that it might not make it: most players find flying hard enough without having gale-force winds and thunderstorms to deal with. However, I wish there could be a tab which allows you to switch it on for planets with an atmosphere, as it would make it rather interesting...
  7. Hello, I was wondering if anyone has seen the recent news report that Elon Musk has asked the developers of KSP for help with "what SpaceX might be doing wrong" when it comes for colonization of Mars (or something to that effect). I didn't know which subforum to place this in, but I just wanted to know what everyone thought about it
  8. @Wizard Kerbal I would recommend to just finish. Just keep adding bits on to whatever you are working on. And it's important to not judge the product until it is completely finished. Don't torture yourself over it, and if you feel that you really can't do anything with it, put it on a shelf for a rainy day. Perhaps one day you will recover the motivation to finish it. I know that that has happened to me. Keep all the rough drafts. And don't be afraid to share them or ask people for ideas, be they a forum poster or your family. And most important: it can only go well if you are having FUN with it.
  9. Hello, @Angel-125! Great story here, I'm really enjoying it! Could you possibly tell me which mods are used for the Pheonix SSTO? I have had a look through some of them, and it looks like Knes, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks! and keep up the good work!
  10. I was trying to make a small kerbalized version of the delta 4 heavy, nicknamed the Kelta 4 light. 5 seconds after lift-off, the ship veered too far north and tipped over. The resulting explosions tore off the lower stages, leaving a payload fairing with a remote guidance unit inside plus a clamp-o-tron docking port. I released the fairing, with my craft facing head down about to smash into the ground at over 60m/s. Then, as it landed the clamp-o-tron absorbed the shock of impact and the remote guidance unit plus 1000 units of electric charge battery bank were saved. So now I know what to do i that ever happens again! BTW The clamp-o-tron didn't survive the landing
  11. Oh dear, do I sense an Insight Lander-esque loss of power? Only time will tell... (Good luck Usagi-11!)
  12. All throughout the past week I have been experimenting with reusable rockets, and now I have decided to allow an insight through all the developments, successes and failures of my new rocket program! I will try to upload new material as quickly as possible. This is inspired by SpaceX's Starship program, but Kerbalized. I hope you have as much fun as I did reading this! PS: Everything that is documented here actually happened with no "scripted" hiccups and explosions. A full blueprint of a proposed fully-reusable craft was drawn up and the testing would take place in stages, starting with the engines... Starting off, a small tank-like structure used to test a new-radical engine: the KS-25. The development team produced this with onw goal in mind: it had to have enormous gimbal to deal with the large boosters and being able to land them. The first prototype would be named K1 - all mission ready craft would receive the designation KN --. The first test went well to begin with: the three KS-25 engines ignited without any issues, and the gimbal seemed to be enough as it manoeuvred over the grassland near the space-centre. However, as it began the landing sequence, disaster struck. The engines over-gimballed and the craft plunged into the ground, destroying most of it. https://imgur.com/a/46wQDu8 The team was unfazed by this disaster and began work on the second prototype. The second test went perfectly, as the craft took off, moved around and hovered, and then landed. The team immediately started work on the next stage of the project. https://imgur.com/a/biLFMTR The next stage will be published in the next few days, following the startling progress of the new program and full K1 prototype, ready for the first mission by the end of August if all goes well.
  13. I would think that the 's should be italicised otherwise it would look a bit off. But then that could just be my eyes, but i think it looks better all italicised.
  14. Very nice @Wizard Kerbal! That gives you a solid 500 points. Unfortunate about the save file (happens all the time to me as well) I have updated the leaderboard now. (Also kinda hard to see the image - i know what that's like)
  15. Alright, here are the updated points: Stage 1: Capture a tiny asteroid (A, B) - 100 points Stage 2: Capture a medium-sized asteroid (C, D) - 200 points Stage 3: Capture a huge asteroid/small comet (E, F) - 500 points Stage 4: Capture a massive comet (G) - 750 points Stage 5: Capture a Gargantuan comet (H, I) - 1000 points By "capture" I mean that a craft has to dock with it. Any craft will do. Moho - 2000 points Eve - 1500 points, Gilly - 4000 points Kerbin - 4000 points, Mun - 3000 points, Minmus - 3500 points Duna, Ike - 2000 points Dres - 1500 points Jool - 2000 points, Any moon of Jool - 3000 points Eeloo - 4000 points Also, there is a point multiplier for the size of the captured asteroid/comet: Tiny - x1 Medium - x2 Large - x5 Gargantuan - x10
  16. STS 74... Wasn't Chris Hadfield one of the astronauts? I read his book An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth, and he described the mission. Apparently the "space tape" holding the seal in the docking module was so good, they had to slice it with a penknife to get in. Might have got it wrong though so please, if anyone knows, tell me!
  17. Yes I mean that the asteroid/comet can't be placed just inside of a planet/moons SOI but has to be close(ish) to the planet/moon it is orbiting to give it the realistic feel that an asteroid/comet in an extremely elliptical orbit would be launched out of the SOI at some point. Like I said, I leave it up to the entrants to make their minds up about how close/elliptical the orbit is, but make it comfortably inside the SOI. I also should have clarified that mods are allowed, except ones like HyperEdit. Modded parts are fine, but that has to be made clear on the entry.
  18. I have been wondering about posting this challenge for some time, but here it is! The challenge is simple: Capture an asteroid or comet. There will be different ways of completing the challenge as listed below: Stage 1: Capture a tiny asteroid (A, B) - 100 points Stage 2: Capture a medium-sized asteroid (C, D) - 200 points Stage 3: Capture a huge asteroid/small comet (E, F) - 500 points Stage 4: Capture a massive comet (G) - 750 points Stage 5: Capture a Gargantuan comet (H, I) - 1000 points By "capture" I mean that a craft has to dock with it. Any craft will do. Bonus points will be awarded for moving the asteroid/comet into an orbit of another planet/moon. The orbit doesn't have to be stable, but it can't be too elliptical. Moho - 2000 points Eve - 1500 points, Gilly - 4000 points Kerbin - 4000 points, Mun - 3000 points, Minmus - 3500 points Duna, Ike - 2000 points Dres - 4500 points Jool - 2000 points, Any moon of Jool - 3000 points Eeloo - 4000 points Have fun! Please submit either images or videos of you doing it. If you put the asteroid/comet in orbit of another planet/moon please state the apoapsis and periapsis height. If the orbit is too elliptical then the orbit points won't be counted. For a rough guide, it should be in an orbit where a CRAFT can rendezvous with it and mine it for resources. GOOD LUCK ALL! I will update the leaderboard by points 1. @Wizard Kerbal - 500 points - (Class E asteroid) 2. 3.
  19. I try not to clip for the full sense of "realism", but I think it is allowable when you want to have a great-looking craft or a true-to-life replica of some rocket.
  20. I have just about the same lander for everything. Only very minor modifications. The only difference is the transfer stage. That get bigger or smaller depending on where I am going. My SSTO's are the same. I mostly use what I know will work, but at the moment, I am in the process of updating all my landers so I don't really have a fixed one at the moment.
  21. I first saw it in videos when I was about 7 years old. Then I forgot about it for 10 years. Then I somehow remembered (my mind works in mysterious ways) and by then it was 1.10. So, I am a pretty late-comer and I have been playing this solidly for almost a year now.
  22. I would say Minmus after orbiting. First, I did a flyby around the Mun which did give me a lot of science, but honestly, for your first "Landing" do Minmus. It is so easy to land on and you can biome hop with very little effort, racking up huge amounts of Science. For interplanetary first trip, go to Gilly.
