  1. Chapter 8: Trials and Tribulations

    Welp. I guess I'm the new mission documenter.  I don't really know who's actually reading these, but I hope you weren't bored out of your mind by the last guy. Actually, what did happen to the last guy? Nevermind, we have stuff to do. A fishy looking guy named Gene showed up on our doorstep with a very official looking letter saying that The Central Directorate and The Chancellor himself have ordered that more manned missions shall be conducted outside of Low Kerbin Orbit. Specifically, Pol.

    To accomplish these lofty goals, the best college dropouts engineers of of the SSP have been ordered to stay up for roughly a week, using extreme amounts of caffeine to devise the Horizons 5 spacecraft:

    Jedediah, the only Kerbal as of yet to ever fly into space has been elected to go on this mission. It only took a little bit of knockout gas to get him into the rocket.

    The twin SRB's are a new design, meant to stretch the limits of what the base New Horizons rocket is able to do. The capsule and spacecraft are basically just the Horizons 4 spacecraft but with an added fuel tank in the middle.

    Wait, something went wrong with the SRB separation. It appears attaching them from the bottom leads to, well, issues. Perhaps also, getting Jeb to fly the rocket while still under the effects of ether might have not been the best idea.

    He manages to abort safely, much to the chagrin of mission control, where cries of "JEEEEB!!" can be heard.

    When we recovered him, he kind of just flopped out of the capsule. As far as our resident medical expert can say, "Welp. He's probably not awake. I don't know what you're asking me about this for, I just clean the toilets around here"

    However, the show must go on. Gene has still been hanging around the offices asking about the status of a Pol mission, and he has a few very serious looking government guys behind him to back up his claim.

    Valentina has been chosen to lead this mission, as Jeb is still recovering. It'll be a Pol flyby mission/Extended duration flight mission.

    This time, as shown by this amazing graphic, we have shifted the boosters downwards, which should fix the issue of the rocket exploding horribly and failing the mission.

    Valentina reaches the actual flyby, but unfortunately for everyone waiting for  pretty photos of the surface, we don't get close enough to make any features out. To make things even worse, we go by on the dark side, completely obscuring our view

    Valentine makes an orbital correction burn to bring her Periapsis above the atmosphere. She is going to stay in orbit for 4 more days, much to her incessant groaning about "no leg room" and "the only food to eat is chicken salad." Frankly, I love chicken salad, so I see no issues.

    She waves one last goodbye to Pol and Tylo, as mission control reminds her that they can't wave back, as they aren't sentient beings. She has to de-orbit as she has run out of food, and The Central Directorate demands she be brought back with minimal starvation. I guess they don't realize that malnutrition builds character, but whatever

  2. Chapter 7: Business as Usual

    Did . . . Something just happen? It feels like a year just passed, yet it also feels like nothing at all. Everyone is in their normal places and nothing seems off, yet I have a sinking feeling that I just missed something important. Yet, regardless, the show must go on. There are still rockets to launch, moons to orbit, and with that, we come to the Horizons 4:

    Built with the most powerful Horizons rocket to date, it even has an orbital maneuvering module for advanced rendezvous capabilities. That, in fact, is it's mission. To Rendezvous with another spacecraft in orbit and, well, kinda just say hi. We haven't really figured out how to dock yet.

    All in all, a successful mission. SCIENCE! was gained, although we didn't get to attempt a rendezvous. However, we did get to test the limits of the endurance of the Horizons spacecraft and our astronauts. That'll be Jeff Kerman, signing off-

    Author's Note: Snacks! has some issues with the modified (longer) day meaning a kerbal could survive for 30 times longer than intended as the day is 30 normal days long. I think I have solved this but we will see.

  3. It's Back!

    The mission report that no one cared about is back! Same as the last one, it is using my own KerBinary mod, as well as my own homemade frankensteined visual mod. The general stuff is the same, with it being mostly stock + Restockplus and Restock, and with a 2X rescale, because it just feels better.

    The science is not balanced yet but I will get around to balancing it sometime, for now science is just on 50% and I'll be limiting myself to what feels right

    In the wise words of some philosopher, everyone starts somewhere. The Kerbals are no exception. For years they have looked up at the sky, and wondered, "Are there Snacks up there?"

    Today, they find out.

     

    At last, the KSP's first rocket was built. It was originally going to be unmanned, but thanks to Jeb's complaining, a small capsule was created just for it. Presenting, the Hopper 1!

    3.. 2.. 1.. IGNITION!

    After the fuel burns out, we reach maximum height at around the pitiful height of 20 km. Jeb is able to buzz some airplanes on the way down.

    And landed! Jeb's hunger for speed, height, and danger, has not been entirely satisfied by this rocket, though. this must be rectified, as well as the collection of more SCIENCE!

    And so ends the flight of the Hopper 1. A decent flight, it ended in Jeb going almost 1/4 the way out of the atmosphere, but we will certainly go farther on the next launch. I also unlocked some SCIENCE! which I used to get the first 2 techs.

    The decoupler and the larger boosters would be imperative in the second launch, the Hopper 2! Due to launching restrictions though, we couldn't have made it larger, or else Jeb might have blacked out from the Gees

    It's a big upgrade from the Hopper 1, with a larger booster, fins, and a decoupler for the capsule so the parachute can be more effective.

    Strangely enough, the rocket started heating up on launch, and streaks of air began glowing around the rocket. this was later discovered to be a phenomenon called Compression Heating which might need to be factored into future launches, especially on atmospheric entry.

    Even after engine burnout, the rocket was able to make it to space! Jeb's appetite for danger has probably been satisfied, and we get all of that sweet, sweet SCIENCE!

    Decoupling the capsule. Unfortunately though, we later received news that the booster survived the trip, just to crash into Bill's hotdog stand just outside of the space center. This had the side effect of making Bill jobless, which meant we could kidnap recruit him into the space program.

    In the end, 2 wildly successful missions, with lots of SCIENCE! gained, funds gathered, and we are now ready to go for orbit. Unfortunately, that would require bigger boosters, so Gene will have to put his solar-system conquering ambitions on hold for now.

  4. Chapter 3: Going Up, and Down, and Up

     

    Anyways, for the three people that were mildly interested in this, I'm sorry for not posting. I kind of didn't play KSP for 2 months. I might upload more frequently, really depends.

    Anyways, back to the story.

    After the success of the Rangefinder sounding rocket program, there was a cry to go further. The public and the shareholders alike wanted us to do more, to put something in space that would crash and burn 5 minutes later. So we decided to go to orbit.

  5. Chapter 2: Strange Rockets

    After the largely successful initial launches of the GoUp program, the SDB started looking a bit closer. A new rocket was needed to get Kerbin science high altitude atmospheric samples. The only remaining design from the old SDB was reused. It was time for the return of the RANGEFINDER SAMPLE RETURN VEHICLE! Unfortunately the original design was pirated and copyrighted so some changes had to be made.

    All in all, a terrible day for the space program. Funds were wasted, barely any SCIENCE! was gained, and the RSRS was deemed "a strange and terrible device" by Engineering. Also, we ran out of coffee.

  6. After the failure of the original Sentinel Design Bureau, all funding was cut and the agency put on life support. Luckily, however, it was revived by the latest administration in the great nation of United East Kerbonia! Now it stands to expand kerbalkind through the planets and moons of the Kerbol system, but first, it has to start all over.

    This is a rescaled 2x career using a whole slew of mods and custom visuals based off of Spectra. my goal is to somewhat reaalistically explore the kerbolar system and colonize it, and maybe go interstellar.

    When the Sentinel Design Bureau was revived, a new rocket had to be made to make up for lost tech. Building off of the blueprints that were discovered being used as Bill Kerman's coffee napkins. The result was a brand-new family of sounding rockets. Behold, the aptly-named GoUp 1!

  7. CHAPTER 3: I'm BAAACK

    _______________________________________________

    After a short hiatus ( I discovered stellaris) the space program has been sending out flights one after the other. The following photos and images have been well upgraded due to the purchase of a color camera from Vinnie's corner store. The first bunch of launches consisted of a strange rocket design called the Rangefiner Sample Return System. Thanks to a shipping error causing the parachutes to be shipped to Kiberia, a rocket had to be designed that would return upper-atmospheric samples without parachutes. The result is this (btw, sorry about the background on the side of the images.):

    Yeah. If you haven't guessed the purpose of the upper rocket engine, let me explain. due to a distinct lack of parachutes, a method to slow down before crashing had to be implemented. The upper rocket fires about 1.5 kilometers up and is destroyed upon ground impact, while the Crumpli-SafeTM SampleCageTM protects the precious samples. Why we couldn't just use a plane, I don't know. I'm just a media writer.

  8. CHAPTER 2: Higher and Higher

    ______________________________________________

    The push to go higher has been taking over the Sentinel Design Bureau, leading to the construction of a better rocket. It has it all: Moar Science, Moar fins, and Moar BOOOOOOOOOSTEEEER!! It's name: The Rangefinder MK2.

    I don't even . . . HOW

    After the successful high altitude flight of the Rangefinder MK2, a new sounding rocket had to be made. It's goal, space. It's name: Rangefinder MK2.5! (yes it's just a Rangefinder MK2 X 2)

"Okay, uhhhh, we've just lost contact with the rocket. final telemetry indicates uhhhhhhh, lets see, uhh 13 gees? I don't think that's good? We also seemed to be getting waaay too much heating before telemetry loss" -Mission control telemetry operator Delpha Kerman.

    After 2 minutes of silence after contact with the rocket was lost, the workers at mission control were able to reestablish telemetry with the rocket. It was revealed that the insane acceleration and speeds of ascent low in the atmosphere had caused a new phenomenon called Compression Heating. It seems that any rocket that will need to reenter that atmosphere will need protection, especially ones traveling at orbital velocity.

    Funnily enough, on descent the rocket approached at the perfect angle to act as a lifting body, swooping up and stalling midair. Perhaps lifting-body designs may be employed in the future for other things . . .

    Anyway, that concludes chapter 2 of the story of the Sentinel Design Bureau. I do have a question though, would anyone like for me to upload my crafts used to KerbalX so anyone can use? I do have a ton of mods, with one custom part, though it's just a config file.

     

  9. CHAPTER 1: Everyone has to Start Somewhere, Right?

    Well, as suggested in the title, everyone has to start somewhere, and we start out with basic sounding rockets. Unpaid grad students Engineers slaved for like 4 hours and 38 cups of coffee over this rocket. So, lets launch the Rangefinder MK1!

    What comes up must come down, I guess. Science was got and transmitted, and kerbalkind's first foray into the stars is complete. Unfortunately,  the PR team forgot to post the launch schedule right and noone showed up (I forgot to accept the "leave the launchpad" contract), and a second launch had to be conducted. It ended up looking the same as the first, until later in flight.

    This mission report is intended to be semi-serious, with a big dollop of realism and a big pinch of good o'l fashioned kerbal silliness. This is intended to last quite a bit longer than my last mission report, and my eventual goal is, as stated in the name, to go to the stars. You know, launch an interstellar ship the proper way, which I really haven't seen anyone really do yet. I'm also going to use a ton of mods, including Snacks-LS and 2.5X rescale. Anyways, lets go!

     

     

  11. I have experienced a problem with the scatterer menu. I realize it is probably an issue with my screen resolution. It basicially does not fully fit onto my screen due to the size of it and when I click it it sort of oscillates, making it impossible to use it. Can you please help?  By the way I am on Mac in version 1.12.2 with the latest scatterer version.
