In case anyone else has this problem, in Steam, I clicked on manage --> browse local files and launched the KSP.app. Works without a problem now.

Have you had any luck getting it to work? Tried on my M1 Macbook Pro and get the same thing. Spinning load wheel for awhile and then it just closes.
